Zariel's shikai is cellular control, yes, mainly growth and destruction of the cells. He can regenerate quickly and decay the enemy's body. His bankai allows him to modify DNA, which, while powerful, takes a loooong time. Plus its kinda impractical in pattle.

FYI, the shikai isn't a spear xD

Its the length of a sword, but the blade and guard is just in the shape of a lance. Its also shorter than most swords, also. Confusing post, sorry bout that > . >
