I constantly hear people on these forums say KH is mediocre overall :/ You just have to get used to it >>; Like I don't think that at all, KH is my favorite series like ever but there are a lot of people on these forums who bitch about it >>;

Welcome to KHI where we hate everything about the game we're fans of.

Okay that's probably going too far.

Anyways the games as a whole aren't that bad, but honestly they aren't great. The characters are flat and one sided. They are also you typical default character archetypes. Riku is the redeemed hero, Sora is the underdog hero, Kairi is the damsel in distress, and Donald & Goofy are your comical sidekicks (well at least that's what they are suppose to be).

The story itself isn't all that great either. Now it is not the worst story that Square-Enix has released (that honor goes to Final Fantasy VIII) but it isn't anywhere near the best. Now KH1 has a pretty good story. It's the first game in the series we actually see the hero develop to over come everything thrown at him and complete his journey. In CoM/Re:CoM the story is actually better. It is what darker in tone, the character of Riku goes through some development, and we are introduced to the organization. Now before I continue to KH2 I would like to point that while these past two stories are good and do have their moments they are still not the best stories in the world. Your characters, while receiving some development, still act in mostly the same way with exception that Riku isn't evil anymore.

Now on to KH2. Well the story sucked. The main story which is suppose to be about the organization trying to obtain KH is bogged down by the subplots presented in each world you visit and practically takes a back seat to them. While in KH1 we see our villains actually influencing their perspective worlds and even go outside there world to others. In KH2 the Organization I think maybe effect 3, 4 worlds at the most. In a game that has over ten worlds that is unacceptable. Not to mention that there are worlds that Pete and Maleficent really don't affect at all and shouldn't have been in the game. The characters seem to end up finding themselves in a similar, if not the exact same position as in the first KH1. Sora is basically doing the same thing he was in the first game, looking for his friends. Kairi gets captured by being stupid. Riku finds himself in Ansem SoD's body again, he's just in control this time. The King is still going off on his own doing God knows what. And Donald & Goofy are sill your comical sidekicks searching for the King. This story sucks it really does. Sora still acts like a whiny bitch at times. Riku is still all about the darkness, except he is a good guy now. Kairi is still the damsel in distress. Now of course I have to talk about Roxas. Roxas goes through no development at all. He acts like anyone would expect him to act, like Sora. In fact Nomura even stated that the reason he gave Roxas amnesia is because Roxas wouldn't have joined the Organization ifhe remembered he was Sora because Sora wouldn't join the Org. That's whole reason for it. Now they try and give you reason why he can't remember, but honestly it's just them filling in plot holes.

I haven't played Days so I can't really speak on the story because I haven't played it. So I'm moving straight to game play and difficulty. The game play of these games very between games. KH1's game play is fine. You can basically get through the entire game just by pressing the X button and not really worry with magic or anything else. However it is the first game and they were trying. Com/Re:CoM has the Deck system. The Deck system basically treats the game like a large ass game of Battle (Battle is a card game you can play with a normal 52 card deck). I do have to say it is creative and might look good on paper, but in practice it sucks. Now some people like it, but most people I find found it to be a pain. The reason being is because not only do have to in proximity of the enemy to hit your attack could be negated by a more powerful card. It was difficult to manage and even harder in Riku's game because you couldn't change his deck. You had to use whatever cards they gave. It was all one big headache. Now in KH2 the battle system was actually improved upon. You no longer had to go down to the bottom your menu to perform actions. Combat got some variety with the drives you could get. And the quick time commands made things interesting.

Now as for the difficulty of these games. KH1 was easy, but not overly so. It had a nice balance to it that was lost in the other game. CoM/Re:CoM is difficult, but that is only because the deck system is a hellish nightmare to work with. KH2's difficulty is beyond easy. Many people say it is because of improvements to the battle system, but honestly the enemies are actually easier to defeat. The quick time commands are entirely too easy to perform. In games with these you generally have to press a combination of buttons to perform them, pay heavily for failing. However in KH2 you just press triangle and you're done. The drives can make already easy battles a breeze to go through. The bosses are a joke. Some people say Demyx is hard, but that is only because you have this one point where you have to destroy all his water clones in a certain amount of time or Sora gets flash backs to the clone saga from Spider-Man and his mind explodes. Which is the only reason I can explain why you are defeated for not killing all the clones. In fact most bosses in this game have gimmick of some sort that only make them irritating and tedious instead of difficult. No once again I haven't played days, so I can't speak for it.

It's kind of hard to believe I actually enjoying playing these games, but I do. I guess calling it a guilty pleasure isn't far from the truth. KH1 did make its mark in the action RPG genre and did influence it. Fable is a testament to that. However the games have really only gone down hill after it. Man this kind of turned into my own personal rant about the games, but you were wondering why it's on fans hate on it well there you go.

You pretty much hit the nail right on the head. Games don't have to be flawless to be enjoyed, and KH is a prime example of that.

While I agree definitely that Roxas is gone, and Sora is the main protagonist as stated by Nomura, I wouldn't put it past him to have a very strong implication that Roxas gives Sora strength in future battles.

That will be a new history if the main characters of KH changes.
Wouldn't it be so exciting.
