Birth By Sleep should have been treated as the origin story of Apprentice Xehanort. Instead, it was used to retcon Master Xehanort into the Big Bad of the entire saga.

Why should his body matter, you ask? For one, bringing back MX's old body retroactively weakens the impact of Terra's story. Now Terra is just one vessel among many, and not even the main one.

Another thing is that Ansem SoD and Xemnas were the Heartless and Nobody of AX, not MX. Without AX to act as a link between them they don't feel like the two halves of Xehanort.

It also feels like MX worked as the villain of BbS, but for the finale of the saga it would have been more appropriate to have the "complete" version of all the previous Xehanorts we fought.

Wouldn't the mistake be Xehanort returning as an old man at all instead of just returning as Terranort? There was no reason for old man nort to come back imo, it just made the whole situation involving Terra weird.

There's no reason to bring back old man Xehanort unless he was now considered the Big Bad of the entire saga. It's the difference between the evolution of the character in and out of universe:

In-universe: Master Xehanort => Apprentice Xehanort => Ansem SoD & Xemnas => Recompletion
In this view MX is the origin of the other Norts, but not necessarily the most important one. Here, it would have made more sense to have Terranort be the one recompleted, or to have MX and Terra recompleted separately. Instead, it's somehow both.

Out-of-universe: Ansem SoD => Xemnas => Apprentice Xehanort => Master Xehanort
This is the perspective that lead to bringing back MX. From this view it could seem like the saga was building up toward the old man. Here AX is merely a stepping stone that links the earlier versions of the character to the later ones.

I think the mistake occurred when the out-of-universe perspective was prioritized over the in-universe one. Terranort shouldn't have been treated like a link and stepping stone, he should have been treated as the ultimate version of the character. Xehanort went after Terra's body in BbS specifically because he was getting old, but by the time of DDD and KH3 he's an old man again but his age doesn't seem to be a problem?
