Book 3 Ch. 8 - Never Say Nefir

Successful with forging an alliance with one foreign kingdom, albeit 3000 miles away, it was time to establish one with the gambling kingdom of Getzistan. Iago was well prepared as he had a "system". Genie poofed out of his lamp during the flight. "OK Iago, I got the marked cards, the loaded dice, and the X-ray specs. Sign here. What do ya need all this stuff for anyway?" "That's quite a system."

"What, I'm trying to be practical. We got a genie with semi-phenomenal, nearly-cosmic power! Okay, I was cheatin'! Sue me!" Iago's plan was exposed. Genie was too busy looking at his hand through the x-ray specs. "Ooh, look at the bones!" Just then they stopped. Where the kingdom should have been was a pile of rubble in the shape of a casino paradise. Just then a portly man appeared. Al recognized him as Pasta Al-Dente. "Welcome to Getzistan! I am your host, Sultan Pasta Al-Dente. Smiles everyone, smiles! In Getzistan, everyone smiles! It's the jolliest place on earth!"

Genie thought for a minute that there was something screwy here. Pasta clapped his hands and immediately a band of odd looking creatures appeared. "There's the problem! Imps! Oh, imps are bad news, Al! I've seen 'em strip the flesh off a cow in less than 15 seconds! Or is that piranhas? In any case, I say we lay some traps!"

"That won't be necessary. These imps are the best contractors money can buy. And uh, they're uh, well, they're, they're uh, just remodeling a showroom or two." Pasta was right, the imps were working on restoring the city. From atop an ornate tower was their leader. "What are you doing standing around?! Every idle moment is money out of my pocket, food out of my mouth, blood from my veins!" "That's Nefir. Nefir Hassanuf. He's the head imp."

The griffin-faced imp paced around looking over the guests and glared daggers at Genie, emitting the same response. "There goes the neighborhood. Back to work! Time is money! All play and no work makes Nefir a poor imp."
The imps worked at lightning speeds, something that Genie couldn't do even with his semi-phenomenal nearly-cosmic powers. "Imps! Why did it have to be imps?!"

"You're remodeling the entire city?" "There is one disadvantage. It gets very expensive doing this every day."
"Every day? You rebuild the entire city every day? This isn't just a little remodeling. What's going on here?" "It's because of Samir the Destroyer. He destroys our town every night. It's a curse, or something. Like warts, or a brother-in-law who moves in with you! That kind of thing. Lucky for us the imps repair things so fast. Now if we could only bring back the tourists."

"Why don't you just get rid of this Samir the Destroyer?" The lightbulb lit up in Pasta's head. "What a brilliant idea! Hey, Nefir! Yoo hoo! Aladdin is going to get rid of Samir!"

Nefir, still drinking a martini, spat his out. "Do you realize how much money I'll lose if that boy and his Genie stop Samir? Get back to work! You lazy crap for crap!"

That night, Iago was hitting the slots at Club Nest Egg. "I can't believe you let Karnack here talk you into this. You do your civic duty of being smashed to a pulp." Aladdin and Genie were on a watchtower, looking for Samir. Aladdin started hearing Ponicelli's Dance of the Hours. And then out of nowhere was a gigantic anthropomorphic pink rhino. This was Samir. Rather than go gung-ho over the city, he was dancing a very dainty dance. DANCING! It could only work for hippos, ostriches, and alligators, but not rhinos. But in his melodic trance, Samir was also breaking the buildings that made up Getzistan.

Genie pulled out a tranquilizer gun and fired at Samir. The dart bounced off of his thick hide and hit Aladdin. "Pretty good job, for a genie!" Nefir was laughing his ass off at Genie's expense. After the first movement, Samir was gone and all of Getzistan was in rubble like that morning. Aladdin finally woke up "Did we get him?" "Well, uh, almost?"

Genie spent most of the next afternoon making a city defense mechanism. It collapsed on its test run, thanks to Nefir being determined to keeping Samir on the path of destruction. The griffin-imp turned to Aladdin. "Come, lad. I'll help you out with Samir. My men are the ultimate in efficiency. We'll build you a nice reliable catapult that'll fling Samir the Destroyer clear into next week!" "Hmm, makes more sense than rebuilding the city everyday." Genie's jaw dropped. "But, Al! You used to like it when I fooled around."

Following this shocking revelation, Genie spent the rest of the afternoon moping about the city. As if on cue, Nefir arrived. "I just wanted to congratulate you on your valiant effort last night: You almost beat Samir." "And if I hadn't knocked out my best buddy, he might have seen that." "Look, not everyone can almost defeat a giant dancing rhinoceros. That's impressive. It's all a matter of timing. If I were a genie, I'd go capture the monster while he sleeps. All day in a cave in the next valley. Totally defenseless."

"I can deal with that. Yeah, capture Samir! That would impress Al! Where's that cave?" Nefir pointed Genie in the direction of the valley. Genie arrived there armed with a hammer, to find the giant pink rhino sleeping. Suddenly Samir woke up, but to his surprise…

"Hi!" The monster was friendly, even if it sounded like he smoked 3 packs of cigarettes a day. Genie and Samir were having a pizza and drinking from a punch bowl. "…I learned a lot from that relationship, and that's when I decided to come to Getzistan." "But what's with the dancing? The city? The destruction?" "It's these shoes. I woke up one day, and there they were, right there on my feet. I can't get 'em off. Every night, I hear this fun-kay music. And, well, you know I... 'Gotta dance!' It's the darndest thing, really." "But who would want to destroy Getzistan every night?"

"Me. And my real fun-kay band!" It was Nefir! With a snap of his fingers, Genie was wearing shoes much like Samir's. After charging him 7 grand, his band began to play a mockery of "Friend Like Me." "Hey, like Samir said, 'Gotta dance!'"

Aladdin, Iago, and Abu waited next to a postbox for the weapon that Nefir promised to make them. A scroll was in it. "'Dear boy, bird and monkey: Sorry we didn't build you a catapult. Something came up. Have fun fighting Samir without your genie! Signed, Nefir. P.S. Please remit 700 coppers for the mailbox.' Ooh! I don't believe those guys!" "Wonderful! No catapult, no genie- No way!"

The mocking "Friend Like Me" was still playing as Samir and Genie began dancing their way to the city, bound to cause chaos and destruction. "I'm, I'm so sorry, Al! I really messed up this time!" "Genie, just stop dancing!" "I-I can't! It's Nefir! He used his imps to put magic dancing shoes on Samir! And now I've got 'em too!" "But why- Of course! Nefir's running a royal scam! Genie, you were right about those imps!" "I was right? I was right!"

Nefir watched his incoming "paycheck" waltz its way to the city. "With two monsters dancing, the city is destroyed twice as fast! How efficient. I can destroy the city twice a day!" Suddenly, Samir and Genie started dancing in a different direction, led by a snake charmer's flute played by Aladdin. "What? What are they doing? No fair, no fair! Quick, something louder!" The imps began playing reggae music. "We need something softer!" Genie, despite being cursed, helped out with Aladdin's group. It was a battle of the bands! After minutes of musical battling, the magic shoes burned out. "As for you shorty!" Genie grabbed Nefir and flicked him like he did Jafar's lamp.

Pasta applauded, now with Samir as a cheap laborer who can get the job done 100 times over and faster than the imps. "All of Getzistan thanks you, Aladdin!" "Actually, I couldn't have done it without some phenomenal cosmic power!" "Semi-phenomenal, nearly cosmic power thank you! Hey, what's the problem, Bird man?" Iago walked by with a barrel covering him. "The Club Nest Egg is the problem! I lost my shirt! The tables are fixed. Rigged, I tell ya! Let's get out of this dump!"

Who knew magic shoes and scamming could destroy a city? Good thing Al and Genie was able to save the day with a battle of the bands! It was an entertaining read and amusing to think Iago was playing at something similar to a casino.

Speaking of scamming, and as a final Summer '16 gift:

Book 3 Ch. 9 - The Spice is Right
On the way back from Getzistan, Aladdin and the crew found themselves at an ancient ruin, looking down a lone well. Judging by all the sand covering the ruin and the well, it had been nearly hundreds of years since it had been buried. Iago came out of the well wearing scuba gear. "Big bucks coming through! I hope. And this suit was not my idea!" Genie followed him up wearing similar gear, and holding a black chest. "Sure was deep! Whoever buried this must have wanted it to stay put!" An ancient script was on there, carefully translated by "Genie Translate" (patent pending).

"It says something about spice, Genie. Magic spice." Indeed the chest was filled with purple spice. Iago hastily denounced that it had the Midas touch, or granted invisibility. Genie used a "magic detector" and found nothing magic about the spice. Aladdin took note of the necklace in the chest. As soon as he pulled it out, a rainstorm began to blow. "That's strange. It was clear just a moment ago."

Genie diverted the lightning from the storm, just as the wind blew the necklace out of Al's hand. The storm stopped. "I just wonder where that purple lightning came from."

Aladdin finally arrived back in the palace, jeweled necklace in hand. No sooner did Aladdin show Jasmine the necklace that she decided to show her father. Iago and Genie meanwhile were hitting the streets as part of a snake-oil sale on the magic spice. The Sultan was impressed by the necklace, thinking it to be a wedding present. A loud sounded from behind them. They turned around to see a storm cloud form coming towards them. The cloud disappeared and a gray-skinned man appeared in its place. Rajah growled at him, but the tiger was frozen by him, as if the man had an evil eye. He kissed the princess' hand.
Aladdin was not happy that some geezer was hitting on his girl. "Hey, look mister!"
"You little matchmaker, you! I like her. My name's Ayam Aghoul. Many thanks for unleashing me." "Unleashing you?" "I haven't felt so alive since... Ooh, silly me. I've never been alive." Dear lord above; Aladdin had unintentionally released a lich from the Land of the Dead! The Sultan pointed to Aghoul. "See here, sir! No one from beyond the grave kisses my daughter!"
"Oh, I'm hardly just anyone. You're talking to the duke of the undead. You see, I once possessed that enchanted necklace. Any woman who wore it became my bride. I went through a long line of wives, until the day I tried slipping my necklace onto a comely young sorceress. She trapped me within my necklace! Where I stayed... until today, when you placed it on Jasmine, betrothing her as my next bride!" Aghoul pulled out a box of chocolate covered spiders and presented it to Jasmine.

"Don't worry, Jasmine, we can unbetroth you just as easy." As Al reached for the necklace, Aghoul shot a bolt of lightning at him. Following this, he summoned an army of skeletons, who were still in the midst of their Routine #1929. Aladdin saw no threat from the four skeletons as he slid into them, only to see them reform into a sort of 4-headed centaur. The Guards rushed in hearing the commotion, only to be trapped in a bone cage. The centaur skeleton grabbed Aladdin and Abu, throwing them off of the balcony. The Carpet was lucky to catch them in time.
"Time for the fitting! Skeletons: They're creatures of destruction, they're tailors... gotta love them!" Aghoul turned to Jasmine. "Oh, so sorry about your young lad. I was going to make him my best man, you know." What Aghoul didn't see as he was talking to his "bride" was that Aladdin made a signal to the Sultan that he had a plan.

"This is all my fault. I had to give Jasmine that stupid necklace! Carpet, we need Genie!" Al, Abu, and Carpet flew off to the Marketplace at Iago's stand where, Genie was selling more of the spice. While they flew off, Aghoul was busy with his skeletal laborers making his own macabre wedding pavilion "The nice thing, 'dad', is that Jasmine will stay close. We're moving in right next door. White ribcage fence, a little carnivorous plant garden out back. Our little dream house, with you, my wife, to keep it spotless." "What?! I'll never clean your house!" "For a second there, Jasmine dear, I thought you didn't appreciate my offer of domestic bliss." Before he could advance, a pyramid fell into the balcony. The dropper was Abu riding a mechanical sphinx. A second pyramid fell onto Aghoul, destroying the balcony in the process. "The strength of a thousand Teamsters in one little finger. I love being a genie!"

Aladdin jumped down and rushed to Jasmine. "Oh, Aladdin, you won!" "So, it's a fight you want, is it, boy?" Aghoul reappeared, summoning a giant tornado with purple lightning. Genie pulled out a weathervane again, but it ended up zapping Genie. "Some advice for you, boy. Start looking for a new girlfriend. For once Jasmine enters my dream house with me, she'll be mine for eternity. Allow me to introduce you to my other brides…" The ghoul clapped his hands and three skeletons appeared behind Jasmine, giggling and holding cobweb fans. "Quite a harem, eh?"

The sight of skeletal brides creeped out the heroes. "I'm gonna lose her, Genie, and it's all my fault. How was I supposed to know giving Jasmine a gift was gonna unleash that guy?" An idea struck. "Aghoul mentioned that a sorceress once trapped him within his own necklace. We have to figure out how she did it!" "Hmm, that's a toughie. You're right, Al. You should've left that dumb spice chest buried where you found it." Inspiration struck again: It was the spice! It wasn't magic spice, it was anti-magic spice!

"So Genie, where's the spice?" Genie guiltily admitted that Iago had the idea to sell the spice. Aladdin told Genie to head back to the palace and create a distraction, while Al went to the Bazaar and get the spice back from every customer. While this was going on, Aghoul had began construction on a crypt. "Behold, the portal through which we enter our eternal home. Après vous?" Jasmine made the cliché line of "over her dead body," all while she was forced to wear Aghoul's supernatural dress. Genie arrived as "Your friendly neighborhood wedding consultant! Al says we've gotta stall. Look alive, people! Except you, of course." "No one hired you!"

Genie insisted with this charade, creating a limbo line. Meanwhile, Al found Iago and discovered that all the spice had been sold. "We have to get that spice back! Where is it?" "10%, forget the rental, and I'll throw in the genie's cut." Then they heard men talking about how the spice didn't seem to be working like before. "We have to buy it back, even if it means paying double their purchase price!"
Back at the Palace, Genie was distracting Aghoul with a pita high dive. Aghoul fell from the board an broke several bones. "Aw, too bad, Champ. Missed dead center by a hair. Good thing for you we've got lots more pita bread!"
"Enough!" This was the last straw for him as he grabbed Jasmine. "And now my dear, enter eternity with me." "I'll never love you!" "If I waited for love I'd still be a bachelor."
Aladdin arrived in the nick of time with the chest of spice. "Not that cursed spice!" "I hear ya, pal. It's brought me nothing but heartache, too."
Al threw the spice at Aghoul, but he took this chance to shove Jasmine into his infernal palace. Aladdin broke down on his knees.
"Aladdin…" It was Jasmine. "But, if you're out here, who's in there?"

Inside the house… "Well, darling, how do you like it?"
"Oh, I don't know. Maybe with some café curtains over the window. Maybe with some windows, for that matter..."
It was Genie. The infernal place exploded. Just as Aghoul was about to shoot lightning at Aladdin, the street urchin threw the spice at the necklace. Aghoul clutched his chest and was sucked back into it. Abu slammed the chest shut, after throwing the necklace in. All of Aghoul's sorcery was undone. Just to make sure this wouldn't happen again, despite Iago's protests, Genie hurled the chest away, never to be seen again.

Good grief, you'd think they'd learn not to go looking for treasure that's buried. I'm glad Genie sticks around to help out because, it was clever of him to take Jasmine's place before it was too late. Furthermore, I like how the Sultan got all huffy when Jasmine got kissed on the hand by Aghoul. This was a greatly entertaining story. Love the shenanigans Aladdin and his friends get into. I wonder if Aladdin learned his lesson? Maybe getting something a bit more normal for a wedding gift would be better, eh? xD

Chapter 27 - To Cure a Thief
At last!

A thief had managed to break into the Sultan's treasury. His target was a golden gauntlet on a pedestal. As soon as he grabbed it, a cage lowered over the pedestal and an alarm sounded off. He began to run, but his foot got caught in a trap door. Freeing himself and losing his turban in the process, the thief manage to escape with nary a scratch on him, save for exposing his heart-print briefs and the fact that he left the gauntlet behind, possibly to return getting it. The fabric was still there when the guards arrived.

"I can't believe someone broke into the royal treasure room, Father." Jasmine and the crew were overseeing Razoul and the other guards resetting the traps.

"It is very strange, Jasmine. There's so much here to take yet it seems they were only interested in that jeweled gauntlet."

Abu was interested in it, noting how shiny it looked. Touching undid everything that the guards were doing: Hakim and Fazal were nearly stabbed by daggers, Razoul lost his pants to the mace, and Iago was nearly decapitated. Not wanting to get caught, Abu placed the gauntlet in Aladdin's hand.

"Um… I can explain…"

Now in the boudoir cage, Aladdin was now venting his frustration on his friend. Iago chimed in as well. " I am raw under the toupee!"

"Aladdin, maybe you're being a little rough on Abu…"

"Rough? Rough?! He embarrassed me! The Sultan thought I took it! When will you learn?!"

As he was storming out, Genie materialized as a 50's PSA.

"Learning can be fun, with Professor Knowledge-edge-edge-edge! Put on your thinking fez! Today's secret word: steal. One: to take another's property dishonestly. Two: DON'T DO IT! So, class, what have we learned?"

Genie held out a quarter, which Abu took. "… kid knows the value of a buck."

Just as he was finishing, Aladdin walked in holding a harness. "I'm sorry, but you left me no choice." Abu was having flashbacks to Fazal leashing him to get dates. "If you won't control your stealing, this leash will."

Abu ran off, prompting Jasmine to give Al the look. "I think you overdid it with the leash."

"He'll be back."

"Oh, I don't know, Al. That's one mad monkey." He held up Abu's fez.

Jasmine told Iago to keep an eye on Abu, with the special precaution of making sure that he doesn't steal.

"It's about time. I'm starvin'!"

Iago wasn't doing anything to improve Abu's behavior. He was encouraging it by stealing pastries from Omar's stand! "That's the problem with Al— he's always stifling your creativity! Any time you want to steal pastries, go right ahead. I'm behind you all the way."

A shout rang out as the thief from the palace heist dropped in. "You stole those pastries?"

"It was him! He's the klepto!"

"And a brilliant one at that! Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Damoolah. Amin Damoolah. The way you snatched these pastries was poetry in motion!" he said with a slight Clouseau like flair. "We have much to discuss, you and I. Join me for dinner? My treat."

"Are you cracked? That's the Skull and Dagger, headquarters of the Thieves Guild. They'll eat us alive in there!"

"I'm a member," said Amin, holding out a card. He lead Abu and Iago in. "Just let me do all the talkin', monkey."

"Ha! No one steals a pheasant sammich from Hamar." A big burly thief was giving a knuckle sandwich to another who was holding the eponymous sandwich. Amin quietly warned the two to trust no one in there, not even themselves.

"Kill the melodrama, Damoolah. Why do you need Abu? Plannin' a big pastry caper?"

"Alright my hairy little comrade, listen. There exists a magical gauntlet, the Five Fingers of Discount. It is written that he who wears the five fingers shall gain ultimate thieving abilities. With but a gesture, gold and jewels fly into the gauntlet's grasp! It is about yeah big and is kept in the royal treasury."

"The royal treasury?! Whoa, whoa, whoa, we don't do the palace! They know me there! I'd lose my special status! No, worse— I'd lose my head!"

"I was talking to the monkey!"

"Look, Amin, bubby, you don't wanna go in there! They've got flying swords, a giant mace—"

"—and a really, really big axe!"

That's when it clicked that Amin was indeed the thief from the heist. Just then, Hamar slammed a knife right in front of them. "Thieves only in the Skull and Dagger!"

"I am a 'thif'!"

"Did you say 'thif'? Hey, it's Butterfingers!"

All the bandits in the club started laughing their asses off. "My name is not Butterfingers! And this is my new partner!" He held up Abu "The greatest thief in all of Agrabah!"

More LTAO from the bandits. Abu had it up to here with their annoying laughs, and pantsed Hamar by stealing his belt. "He is the greatest thief in all of Agrabah!"

Just as Iago was about to fly off to warn Al, Amin threw him into a pot and stuck an airhole into it. "With Abu's talent, the Five Fingers of Discount will soon be mine! And I shall be the greatest thief in all of Agrabah!"

Amin and Abu were on a palace rooftop. After firing an arrow attached to a rope, Abu tied the end of the rope around a spire. The makeshift tightrope was enough for Abu but, not so much for Amin, who continually lost his balance.

Back at the Skull and Dagger, Hamar's roughhousing managed to break the pot Iago was in. The first thing on Iago's mind was Abu. "If that monkey's caught, I'll be implicated… dead meat."

"Pheasant sammich!"

The bartender grabbed Iago, not checking that he grabbed a pheasant and made the eponymous sandwich. On its way to Hamar, the sandwich was stolen again, but Iago shouted at the thief that was about to take a bite out of him. "I am the Genie of the Sandwich! Release me and I'll grant you three lunches!"

This was enough to frighten the bandit, and giving Iago the opportunity to escape before Hamar wondered what happened to his sandwich and when gung-ho on everyone in there. "If Al finds out I put Abu up to this he'll be mad. I better devise a clever alibi."

Abu and Amin managed to get inside, but that's when Abu heard his friends' voices.

"It's not your fault, you know."

"She's right, Al. I mean, how were you supposed to know that one little leash would drive away your closest friend?"

"I didn't ask Abu to leave! I'm glad he's gone! He can stay away forever!"

Abu was crushed, and upon hearing his betrayal, began to sulk.

"… who am I kidding? I miss that furry little guy." Unfortunately, he was out of earshot.

Genie then saw Iago's form appearing. "Oh, look, Iago's with him. What's the worst that could happen?"

"ABU'S BECOME THE KING OF THIEVES!"

"…that's pretty bad."

Iago then began to explain his alibi, in a very confusing manner. It didn't fool Al. "Where's Abu?"

"Told ya, king of thieves."

As this was going on, Abu sadly and effortlessly got the Five Fingers of Discount for Amin. As soon as he got, he excitedly put it on like a dog does with a leash. "Gold! Gimme gimme!" The gauntlet acted like a magnet as he pulled a golden elephant towards him. "Hmmm, something more compact." He began a shopping spree with the Five Fingers of Discount. Only to see Aladdin and the crew in the doorway. "Abu! How could you?!"

"Excuse me, I'm trying to shop here!"

"Who's that?" "Him? No idea."

Amin began using the very traps that were used to guard the gauntlet to his own advantage. In this case, the giant mace. After a brief chase, Genie putted it like it were a golf ball. It was then that they found that Amin had robbed the entire treasury.

"Abu's in this mess all because of me."

Genie morphed into Spock, "Do not blame yourself, Captain. Abu's actions are not within his normal behavior pattern."

Death glares were given to Iago. "Oh sure, blame the parrot!"

As if things were much worse than they were, Abu was now leashed by Amin and carrying a giant sack containing all of the treasury. Amin burst open the doors to the Skull and Dagger. "… Butterfingers?"

"I am not Butterfingers! I am the greatest thief in all of Agrabah. So don't ever call me that name again, ok? Or do you want some of this?" Using the Five Fingers, Amin gave Hamar a beat down that would make Balrog proud. Aladdin stepped into the fray. "Hey, Butterfingers."
Abu was delighted. "I want my monkey."

Amin formed an idea as he opened the sack and used the Five Fingers on it. A giant fist formed from the gold. Genie dropped in and intercepted the fist. "Hey, Al, need a hand?" Genie began to arm wrestle with the fist. While the fight was going on Aladdin had a heart to heart with Abu. "It's good to have you back. But no more stealing, right?" "I promise!" "And I promise, no more leashes!"

Genie won the match, but Amin was not ready to go down, zapping him with the Five Fingers.

"Score one for Butterfingers!" Iago realized that what he just said was a bad idea as Amin looked at him with bloodshot eyes. "Don't. Call me. Butterfingers!"

Abu had an idea as he whispered to Aladdin. "Just this once. Do it."

Abu crawled his way up to Amin and grabbed the gauntlet. The fist of treasure collapsed all around him. "I'm alright!"

"Butterfingers!" Hamar burst out of some rubble. Some more bandits did the same.

"Come on, fellas, I was only kidding…"

Everyone was happy, even Iago. However, he once again tried to make himself look like a saint. "I told you not to get mixed up with that guy, but would you listen to me? No!"

Abu angrily put on the Five Fingers and approached Iago.

"Abu, what're you doing with that? Put it down! OK, it was my fault. I got you into that mess! I'm sorry! There, I said it! Let me down! Abu!"

Abu becoming the king of thieves was pretty awesome. I'm glad things worked out in the end between him and Al after all the chaos of stealing and fighting Butterfingers. I also like Genie's pep talk and the way he intercepted the fight to help Al out in getting Abu back. Jasmine being the voice of reason is music to my ears. And Iago makes me laugh. All in all, definitely a good chapter. <3

Chapter 28 - Raiders of the Lost Shark
Money was proving to be hard to come by since Amin's attempted heist with the Five Fingers of Discount. So much so that food was beginning to be harder to find as well. Aladdin himself found this difficult when prepping a feast for Jasmine. Iago chimed in "Hey, Einstein! Ever hear of the Sultan? He likes you. He'll let you have all kinds of riches."
"I don't want other people's money."
"Al, stop this, you're depressing me! How about we take your mind off your bank account with donuts?" Genie held out a box with an assortment of Winchell's donuts, briefly turning into Homer Simpson. "Mmmm... Donuts~..." Genie gargled at the thought. The thought was broken when Farouk began shouting.
"Monster!"
A giant dorsal fin crashed through the city wall, as if a giant shark was swimming through the sand. It swam down the street, destroying merchants' stalls, while people ran screaming in all directions. When it approached the gang, Aladdin and Genie jumped to either side, but Abu couldn't get out of the way in time. He ended up grabbing the dorsal fin and riding it.
The shark swam its way to the Palace, the one place that Aladdin dreaded it would go. Inside, the Sultan and Jasmine were working on a mosaic, only for it to be ripped apart by the shark. No one was hurt, not even Abu as he jumped onto Carpet.
"If that monkey doesn't slow down, someone's going to get hurt!"
Jasmine turned to Aladdin. "What was that thing?"
"I don't know, but I don't think we've seen the last of it."

Everyone from the market came to complain. "Something must be done!" "I can't lose any more customers!" "The monster destroyed my stand and ate all of my wares!" "Forget his rotting fruit, what about our lives?! What are you going to do about it?!"
"Please, please! I assure you, I am exploring all possibilities, not the least of which is—"
"A flying boat!"
"Yes, a flying... what? Jasmine, this is no time for—"
"No look!"
An airship was docking at the balcony, out of it stepped the ship's captain. He was a tall man of African origin, wielding a harpoon. "I seek the Beast."
"I'm afraid you have us at a loss, Captain."
"I am called Merc. For twenty years I have hunted the Seven Deserts for the Beast who swims the sands!"
"It seems our interests are mutual! What would be your price for capturing the Beast?"
"All I ask is a strong crew. Your gold means nothing to me. The Beast winters in hidden caves filled with treasure. The gold and jewel ransom of a thousand sultans has been pressed into his belly. Riches such as this!" He pulled out seven brightly colored rings. Iago saw dollar signs in his eyes. "I love this town!"
"Half those riches will go to he who helps me catch the Beast!"
Iago was pressuring Al to raise his hand. He stepped in just as soon as Razoul was about to volunteer. "Aladdin's the name, but you can call me Al. I am honored by your confidence, Sultan. I will not let you down." "Uh, oh, very well. Aladdin. "
Jasmine then acknowledged the elephant in the room, "I have a question for the captain: what became of his last crew?"
"Better to ask the Beast. He is the one that ate them."

The next morning, Merc and his new crew of our heroes set off in search of the Beast. However, Merc had a few complaints before they set off. "It's bad enough I sail with a bird, a monkey, and a comedian. I'll not be slowed by a useless woman!"
Big mistake Merc. Jasmine grabbed Merc's harpoon and threw it at the steering wheel. It hit the dead center.
Aladdin and the crew were swabbing the deck while Merc steered his airship to the Beast's lair. He noticed something about the mop Al was using: It was Genie. "So you are a genie?"
"What gave it away?"
"Magic won't save you. We all taste the same to the Beast."
Al commented on how grim Merc was being. Jasmine gave him a reassuring pat. "Maybe he just doesn't have what it takes to be a hero, like you Aladdin. You were so brave to volunteer."
"Well, sure, with all that treasure. Not that I don't wanna save Agrabah!"
"There it is! The Beast is close!"
From the starboard side, came the shark. Genie turned into Richard Dreyfuss for a bit "We're gonna need a bigger boat."

"Girl, ready the harpoon, because here it comes!"
The ship started tilting to one side as the Beast slammed into it. Aladdin and Jasmine hung onto the ship, but some crates onboard started sliding the other way. One slid overboard and the Beast swallowed it. Merc threw his harpoon at the monster, but it was smashed to bits. "Hope you buy those harpoons by the case!" The beast began to swim away. "Look how he laughs at us! Here's a meal for you, Beast!" He grabbed Abu and threw him overboard as bait. Carpet was preoccupied by being flattened by a crate. The Beast made a 180 and head right towards Abu. Genie, thinking quickly, turned into a fisherman and cast a line to grab Abu, just before the Beast was able to take a bite out of him.
"You couldn't let him use you as bait, huh? And they say I'm selfish."
The shark swam away once again. "I will chase you into the depths of hell and have your demon hide if I must feed you our souls in the bargain!"
What was more dangerous? The monster in the sand, or the monster on the ship?
The Airship hit a rock formation. Just as Merc was about to shout that the Beast was getting away, Genie pointed out that the shark was heading right at them again. "Better hold on, boy. He looks hungry."
"Genie, we've got to lift the ship!"
At his friend's command, Genie turned into a car jack and lifted the ship away from the rocks. But then he was eaten by the shark. "I know how much he meant to you, boy. But the fact still stands that we all taste the same to the Beast."
But then Genie shot out of the sand like a rocket. "Oh, ever been inside one of those? It's like a flea market in there. That thing eats anything!"
"And Merc keeps sending it customers." Jasmine gave the captain a glare.
"Maybe this wasn't such a good idea."
The ground started to shake again, and then the Beast leapt over the ship, revealing that Merc's story was not an exaggeration. The belly of the Beast was encrusted with gold and jewels, some even fell to the deck of the ship. "The jeweled ransom of a thousand sultans, minus taxes, comes to a total of... Wow! His love handles alone could rebuild Pompeii!"
Merc pointed out that the Beast was heading south. It was a relief for Jasmine, but Al knew that Merc wasn't going to give up that easy, especially with the treasure. "He tried to feed Abu to the Beast. He cares about nothing but the treasure. And you're becoming just like him."

That night when everyone was asleep, Merc snuck into the crew's quarters and grabbed carpet, locking him into a trunk. Just as Jasmine was about to awaken, he threw a sleeping poultice at her. "Nothing personal, Princess, but I am too close to catching the Beast to risk losing my crew. I have seen men like your Aladdin. His eye may be on the treasure, but it is his heart that does the thinking."

The sound of Carpet's tumbling was what woke the boys up. During the night, Merc stuffed Carpet in a trunk and ditched Jasmine. Aladdin knew what he had to do: he marched up to Merc while he was giving orders and demanded an explanation. "I put her on a trade route. A caravan will pick her up. Boy, where are you going? What about the jewels?"
Al had already gotten on board Carpet. "Some things are worth more than treasure." He sped off and just in time, Jasmine was about to become shark food. It proved to be more difficult than what was expected thanks to the strong winds. They were forced to make it to Jasmine's safe spot on foot. "Jasmine, I'm sorry. I wasn't thinking!"
"Not now, Aladdin, just get up here!"
"I have to say this: you're my treas—"
"Al, listen to the little lady."
Genie turned Aladdin's head, revealing that the shark was heading right at them. Genie pulled the others out of the way just before it got to them, and it crashed into the rock. "I don't know how long we'll be safe here."
It wasn't long before the shark started beating the rock with its tail to try to knock them down. Suddenly, a harpoon struck the beast in its tail. It was Merc, pulling a 180! "No crew abandons Merc."
"Thank you, Captain." Merc wasn't buying Al's appreciation. "Deserters. If I did not need you I would let the Beast have his meal." Merc then turned the ship in the direction of the shark, heading for nearby cliffs. But the monster shark was too clever to be trapped, ramming into the ship mid-jump. Merc took the opportunity to chase after it, harpoon in hand, and with a devilish grin. "We have to draw it away from Merc!"
Al began to jump on the ground a safe distance away from Merc. "I'm the one you want!" The monster turned away from Merc, and leapt at Al. But Al was the clever one this time, jumping out of the way. The monster crashed into the cliff face, knocking it out. "Do you think it's dead?" Jasmine wondered. "Nah. Give him two Aspirin and call Jacques Cousteau in the morning."

The trip back was even easier with the wind on their side. The monster-shark was tied up and put on display in the square. The Sultan was impressed. "Well, Captain, you must be pleased that your long hunt is finally over."
"Yes. Chasing the Beast was my life."
"But, what are you going to do with your life now?"
The Sultan was right, now that he cleared his bucket list, what was the infamous Captain Merc going to do now? Was he just in it for the treasure, or was it the thrill of the hunt?

The next morning brought dreadful news: The Beast had escaped!
Aladdin, Jasmine, and crew saw Merc off. "The Beast had no taste for being captured. He'll head home. I can head him off if I go north. Are you with me, boy?"
"Not this time, Captain."
"Thinking with your heart." Just as he was beginning to sail away, he threw the seven rings he showed off to Aladdin. "Take good care of those World Rings, boy," he shouted as he sailed away. "I think he forgot this." Genie held up a broken harpoon. Merc cut the Beast free himself! But deep down, Aladdin knew that there were some things are worth more than treasure, something that Merc was just beginning to understand himself.

Aw, it's kind of a nice lesson for the Merc. Learning that some things are worth more than treasure. I also like Aladdin volunteering to rescue Agrabah, while also wanting money to feed himself and Jasmine. I also really enjoyed the part where Merc came back to rescue their hides despite trying to get rid of Carpet and Jasmine in the first place. In the meantime, I greatly enjoyed reading this short story. I'm not sure if there's more to follow up on it or not, but it was a refreshing tale. Good job as always in writing it! :D

Chapter 29 - Beast or Famine

"You can't escape from me, cursed Beast!"

Merc had begun his second chase after the sand-shark that he and Aladdin's gang had once gone after. The Beast jumped over his ship in a single bound, exposing its treasure-encrusted belly. "Go on, taunt me with your jeweled belly! 'Tis nothing compared to the fine keepsake your hide will make!"

Just as he spoke these words, several harpoons struck out of the dunes, and over the Beast, pinning it to the ground. "No! No, it's mine! Mine!" Not wanting competition over the monster, Merc grabbed his harpoon, only to see several more dig into the airship. What happened next he would never forget.

Aladdin and his male friends were out in the desert, with Aladdin in the lead on a camel. Considering that Genie was with them, he had turned Abu into the camel that Al was riding. Genie meanwhile was in the form of William Shatner. "Charting uncharted... lands! Boldly going where no man has gone before! That's one giant... step for mankind and... just another day for me and... my buddies Al and monkey-boy!" Abu grumbled at Genie's dramatic pauses.

"Heh, I'm glad we're spending time together, too, but you've got to let me concentrate. What good is a trade route if I miss the trouble spots?"

"Oh, there's one now! Abu! Watch your step!" Abu was about to trip over a rock in the sand. Aladdin managed to steer the camelized monkey around the rock before deciding to take a break. Genie decided to turn Abu back into a monkey. Abu started to chitter angrily, but then something caught his eye. Something... frightening. Aladdin and Genie turned around and saw what he was looking at, and they were shocked and frightened as well:

The Beast's skeleton.

"Merc finally caught the Beast!" Aladdin exclaimed. It was hard to believe that Merc was able to do it solo this time. "Don't be so sure, Al. Look!" Genie pointed in a different direction. What lay before them was an equally shocking sight:
The wreck of Merc's ship.

That night, they set up camp in the hull. Walking around the empty ship was either A) more comforting now that Merc's bloodlust was gone, or B) disturbing now that it was permanently grounded.

"Come on, Al. Merc knows the desert. He would know how to hide. Merc is the manliest of men. I mean, talk about guy stuff! Riding the hot sands, the wind in his turban, with a harpoon in his hand, using monkeys for shark bait! Aw, we'll find him, Al." It was a hard fact to swallow that Captain Merc had gone missing without a trace. The only food they had that evening was a grilled banana, one that Abu was saving for himself."You know, I'm starting to think I aggravate the little guy." Abu skulked outside the wreck when he saw something move in the sand. Almost like a trail of dirt sticking out of the ground following him and copying his every move. When he turned his back and looked again, there were three of them! Thankfully Genie's hand snapped in to pull him back into the hull, but not before he could see that the mounds belonged to strange rat-like creatures armed with harpoons. Aladdin was beginning to ponder what happened.

"If whatever got the Beast — and Merc — is close by, no caravan would be safe coming through here. We have to find this thing and stop it, whatever it is."

"Hmm… maybe it was a crocus behemoth. It's kind of like… a thing with a… wait. Visual aid!" As he held Abu in his hand, one of the rat creatures poked his head into a porthole. Genie turned Abu into a strange creature with the body of a gorilla and head of a whale. "Behold! The crocus behemoth! Eighth wonder of the world! Part ape, part whale, able to climb the Empire State Building with Geppetto in his belly."

"I think we would have spotted it."

"Well, maybe it was something really, really tiny… with a huge appetite!" Abu was turned into a cricket with a giant set of teeth as he screeched. The rat creature's jaws hung open as he watched this transformation, watching Genie morph Abu back to normal. He and his buddies jumped back into the tunnel that they burrowed and went into a different direction.

The burrowing trail headed to a cave in a nearby rock formation, housing an entire population of such creatures. They were known as Izygs* and spoke their own language, with the three scouts trying to convey what they just saw to a tall man wearing decorative robes holding a long staff ending with a ruby. "Don't babble at me, animal. Show me." The ruby began to glow as he directed it at one of the Izygs. From the ruby, he could see Genie morphing Abu. A grin curled across his face. "We have a genie in our midst. Very well. You will need these to accomplish your task." He head out a few modified harpoons, outfitted with rubies. "Bring this genie to me."

Just as Aladdin and the crew were about to set out to continue their routing, the Izygs appeared, bursting out of the sand. Genie stepped in front of Al and Abu. "Well, maybe the rats would like some… cheese!" He conjured a giant mousetrap with a chunk of Jarlsberg on the trigger, but the Izygs ignored it. "Not falling for my traps, eh?"

"Maybe they're not rats."

An all-out melee began in the ship's hold with Aladdin getting the idea to stop the Izygs in their tracks by shoving a board in their burrowing paths. But soon, they were surrounded, with the Izygs eyeing Genie. "Oh, so you like the taste of genie, eh? Well you guys don't know who you're messing with! I'm Big Blue. The magic man!" Genie did some Krav Maga moves but the Izygs were not phased, shooting their rods at him, and knocking him out. "Genie, no!" Aladdin and Abu watched in horror as their friend was taken from them by the pack of Izygs. Soon they were along, wondering why they wanted Genie so badly. A shadow loomed over them. Aladdin turned around and saw someone he didn't expect to see.

"I don't believe it! Merc!"

"You have nothing to fear. The Beast is gone; I need no bait or hunting party."

"I'm glad you're alive, Merc. When we saw what those creatures did to your ship, we thought—"

"No, they didn't get me. But they should have."

"What do you mean?"

"Figure it out, boy. It was you who taught me there's more to life that treasure. For me, it was the hunt. But those savage Izygs took that from me. Took all I ever had. Only one thing keeps me going now: revenge."

"They're not savages. They have some sort of magic. They used it to take Genie. We've gotta get him back." Merc was given a funny bit of nostalgia hearing Aladdin's words. "Still thinking with your heart, eh, boy?" He laughed. "I'll have no crew on this voyage! Where I'm going no man, nor beast comes out alive."

"You may not need anyone, but Genie is my friend! And we're gonna save him together!" Merc sighed and let Aladdin lead.

Genie was now trapped between the three orbs in the Izyg colony, now entertaining a group of onlooking Izygs, including children and females. "Thank you. Next show at five o'clock. So how about letting me go? Come on, just let me out to stretch my legs. You like nice cars? My 'stang's parked right outside." He leaned out past the orbs but was zapped, causing the Izygs to flinch from his pain. "I don't get you guys. You obviously don't want to hurt anybody. What do you want from me?"

"They want nothing from you. It is I who have use for you."

It was the man that sent the Izygs to catch Genie. "Who're you, buster?"

"Just a power-hungry shaman looking for his next meal. You see, survival is all the subhumans care about. They slew the great Beast of the sand to fill their bellies and brought me its legendary treasure." He gestured to a pile of treasure, taken from the Beast's underbelly. "I have no need for material things. They feed on food. I feed on power. Tell me, genie, are you feeling weak yet?"

"Weak? No way!" He lifted up one of his conjured elephants but was flattened. "Well, just a little out of shape."

The shaman chuckled. "Soon, every ounce of magic will be drained from your being to become mine."

"Uh, I'd better let you in on a secret. I've only got semi-phenomenal, nearly cosmic powers. You don't want those." "No matter! Even substandard powers from a genie are more imposing than most."

Genie feigned being offended. "You haven't been there. You don't want your friends calling you 'weakling!'" He gestured to the Izygs. The shaman cackled. "Friends?! I have no friends! These savages are my servants. They follow me because they need a leader. But once I have your magic I won't need them. When it comes to friends, genie, I need no one."

Merc and Aladdin were working on a strategy, drawing lines in the sand. "We attack full on, our war cries freezing the blood in their veins. Naturally, we'll be massacred, but we'll hack down as many as we can before we fall."

"I'm trying to rescue Genie, remember? How about a sneak attack?"

"There is no such thing as a sneak attack. The Izygs can sense any movement on the sand. They can hear a lizard crawl a league away. They'll know we're coming before we do." Aladdin thought a bit about this, since it seemed that fighting on land was out of the question, even with the knowledge of the name of these creatures. An idea struck. "A flying ship is silent."

"What flying ship? It's nothing but kindling wood!"

"Can't we rebuild it?"

"We have no lumber to reinforce her."

Aladdin walked over to the bones of the Beast. "We have something better!"

It took them all afternoon, but by sunset, the ship was rebuilt and now had the bones of the Beast not only as reinforcement but as decoration as well. "I must admit, a job well done. Although I would have done just as well myself." Aladdin rolled his eyes, so much for being a team player. "We'll strike before daybreak for the greatest surprise."

"No, my friends. I'm afraid the greater surprise will be yours!" The Shaman was watching them from his staff. He knew what was going to happen as he saw the ship set off the next morning. Time was not on Aladdin's side as Genie was getting thinner and thinner by the hour. "Oh, no strength left. Need some of those chewable Flintstone vitamins." One of the Izygs who was eating a meal nearby saw Genie's struggling and offered him a share of his meal. "For me? Aw, gawrsh."

The shaman arrived, startling the Izygs. "Your friends are loyal, a frailty which has always amused me. The monkey's charming; he'll make a nice meal for our uncivilized friends."

"They wouldn't eat a friend of mine!"

The shaman saw the ship getting near the entrance. "They're almost upon us! Now stop them! Go!"

"You heard him! Don't stop them! Don't go!"

"I'm your leader! You listen to me!"

"Leave 'em alone! Ooh, I'll give you such a zap!" Genie shot a bolt at the shaman but it stopped dead in its tracks as it touched his chest and fell to the ground with a ding. The shaman laughed and zapped the Izygs to get moving. "The moment the ship moors the savages will swarm all over it like ants on sugar. Your friends won't have a chance."

What happened next he would never suspect. "It's not mooring. It's not mooring!"

The prow of the ship crashed through the cavern wall. The shaman shouted at the Izygs to get moving. Abu was at the helm acting as a distraction as Aladdin and Merc burst onto the scene through the through the Beast's jaws. They began pushing the ship out of the cave as Abu jumped off leaving the attacking Izygs stranded on the deck as it landed with a thud.

"Al. You came for me." Genie was even thinner now. "What's a buddy for? Genie, what happened to you?"

"He's been drained of his energy. Now I am all powerful, for I have consumed the magic of a hundred sorcerers and one genie!" Aladdin was getting flashbacks to Jafar when he was still alive and had the phenomenal cosmic powers of an enslaved Genie, only this shaman was much more dangerous as he could easily unmake him with a snap of his fingers. Merc tried to rush him. "Eat cold steel, Beast-slayer! Vengeance is mine!"

With a flick of his finger, the shaman melted the metal off of Merc's harpoon, leaving a pile of slag on the ground. "Vengeance?! Another human frailty! Amuse yourself with the savages." Abu pointed to the outside of the cave; the Izygs were climbing up the rockface and towards the cave. "They alone fed upon the flesh of your Beast."

"Then this is your fight, boy. My quarrel is with them."

"Heads up, Al!"

The shaman floated up in the air as he began to shoot lighting at Aladdin, throwing his staff to create shockwaves. "I think your genie's power suits me well, don't you?" Aladdin had to figure out a strategy. As soon as the shaman threw his staff down again, Aladdin vaulted on top of it and kicked the shaman in the chest. "You fool!" He melted the ground where Aladdin landed and hardened it again, trapping him where he stood. Abu grabbed one of the Izygs' harpoons and tossed it at Aladdin, giving him a chisel of sorts. "Now I will conjure a creature so terrifying the mere sight of it will drive you to madness!" As he charged his staff, he thought of such a creature, Cthulhu perhaps. But to his surprise, he ended up summoning a Goomba. "What?!"

"That would be the semi-phenomenal, nearly cosmic part."

"No matter, Today I have tasted a genie's magic, and now I shall devour your souls!"

Throwing his cape off, it turned into a shadow. The shadow began to fly about and aimed towards Aladdin and Abu, who had just broken out of the ground. Genie turned to see the Izygs still fighting Merc. "Guys, stop! You're fighting the wrong guy!"

"They won't listen to you! They're savages!"

"You're not savages! You're Izygs! You want to help me, but you can't, because of him!" Genie pointed to the shaman, laughing at Aladdin and Abu trying to dodge the shadow. "He's no leader. Leaders care for you. They don't hurt you. So please, help him!" The Izygs realized that Genie was right and stopped their battle with Merc.

And it was about time that they decided to help as Aladdin and Abu were cornered by the shadow. The Izygs ran up to the shaman and began to pull on his staff. "No! What are you doing?!" They managed to take the staff and throw it to the ground. When they did, the shadow stopped chasing Aladdin and flew around the cave randomly. "I'll make you pay for this!" But it was too late, the shadow flew by the shaman and devoured him, with a scream. Now that they were freed, the Izygs smashed the staff, not only freeing Genie and giving his powers back, but causing the shadow to cease to exist. "Yes! Feel the burn!" While Genie flexed, the Izygs handed him the broken staff. "Aw, I'd love to join your club, but I can't. Not that you guys aren't swell. My place is with my buddies. Hey, how about him? Whadda ya say, cap'n? They need a leader, and you must have a load of free time now that the big, bad Beast is gone!"

Merc was starting to wonder what Genie was saying. Aladdin stepped in to explain it. "I think what Genie means is, something can fill the void. They're hunters like yourself."

"I told you before, boy. I need no one."

"Go on, make ol' salty feel welcome."

The Izygs nodded and gave Merc the staff. "Take it, Merc. What's a captain without a crew?" Doing so, he realized that once again, Aladdin was right. He and his new crew set out over the desert. "The children are hungry! Come, my crew! The hunt awaits us. Wherever the wind may lead!" "You make me proud, you old seaside salty!" Genie kissed Merc, causing him to flash his new harpoon at him. "Kiss me again and you're shark bait!" Genie nervously backed away, but he and Al were happy knowing that Merc had gained new friends.

*This word is not random. If you take "Ewok" into an Al-bhed cypher, setting it as "Al-bhed" then the "English" word will come out as "Izyg"
