I'm going to Geek.kon in Madison, Wisconsin this August and may, or may not be running a panel on bad fanfiction.

Nothing is set in stone yet, I'm still submitting my application, but yes. If it doesn't work out for Geek.Kon, possibly Anime Milwaukee.

I'll be reading some, and also talking about some things to avoid. I'd be interested in opinions, ideas, suggestions for reading (not My Immortal please), and things that you find writers fall into, or why bad fanfiction ends up happening.

Also, I'm just interested as a thread. I'm gonna post some later as I collect my thoughts.

If you link me mature stuff, do it privately, as I'm willing to accept mature stuff but don't necessarily want it posted in the thread.

Avoid wincest and anything MLP and you're golden rofl

honestly I'd focus on AUs of whatever you're into, a hussite like yourself probably has a broad assortment of topics to go from so be yourself and try to have fun!

Or go straight to it for the bad stuff.

AUs of Homestuck are actually pretty good most of the time because literally anything you want can exist in that realm. Anything goes. A universe where all the trees are dildos? It can diddlyin' happen. Now of course it'll be ridiculous but it won't be too bad on unbelievable.

I kinda wanna avoid MLP personally, though, because I like MLP and don't really want to read horseporn out loud while I'm literally dressed up as a glam pony.

I don't read fan fiction that often, so my experience is rather limited, but something I've come across that irks me is mid sentence or mid paragraph "author's notes".

I can't name a story off the top of my head, but it's when in the middle of writing the author will stop and put a note in parenthesis, usually some explanation that could've been weaved into the story instead of randomly dropped in like a ton of bricks, then continue. It's really distracting because the author is literally halting their own story to interject their thoughts in the middle of it.

It'd be great if you talk about story immersion, why this sort of thing breaks it, and why it's important to keep the reader immersed. Even though I don't read fan fiction often this has become a great pet peve of mine.

Oh my god how did I forget this, I even did this originally with number points at the end and eventually scraped them for being cleaner. I completely forgot thank you. I fucking hate this shit too. Hell, a lot of things I read about writing, parenthesis, usually useless. Like seriously. Usually it just falls into you telling and not showing and it's not needed. Just weave it in or leave it to the reader.
