Okay, Heartless always existed. They just weren't in the RoL, excluding those summoned by MX, yet until XtA's experiments.

But what about Nobodies?
Did they always exist too?

I just can't think of a logical explanation to what caused the Nobodies to appear later on in KH's timeline, and not from the beginning. Anyone have ideas?

Nobodies didn't exist until after the artificial Heartless were created.

When a body and heart split prior to Xehanort the Apprentice's experiments, the body would vanish and the heart would return to Kingdom Hearts. Pureblood Heartless seem to be made from the darkness in the heart. the Emblemed Heartless are made by the process of Darkness engulfing the heart being reproduced.

EDIT: At least it seems Nobodies didn't exist prior to the experiments.

I would think nobodies existed, but were rare.

Just like heartless were rare.

Then the heartless were created, so people kept losing hearts while the stronger ones created either a small nobody or the organization.

Heartless weren't rare, they just didn't have a path out of the Realm of Darkness.

Each Realm has an inhabitant of its own:

Realm of Light - humans, animals and insects
Realm of Darkness - Pureblood Heartless

I presume that the middle Realm would have the Nobodies, which would be the same case of the Heartless; they didn't have a pathway to enter the RoL, so they were "trapped" in their own Realm.

Wait what? That's SO wrong. Nobodies have always existed, same as the heartless. It doesn't have ANYTHING to do with Xehanort experiments. Xehanort's experiments only gave birth to the emblem-type heartless, nothing else.

Also, REGULAR nobodies have no reason to hurt someone, and they only appear in the realm of light or darkness when summoned by a superior nobody. That's why you don't see nobodies in KH1 for example, because none of the powerful nobodies such as Org Members weren't around to summon them. We can guess that after CoM events Xemnas decides to put those "seeds" in his way, sending nobodies to all worlds Sora could possibly go, or making other members follow him to the world.

Yeah, I reckon that Nobodies have been around as long as Heartless have. Think about it, as long as a heart can be consumed by the darkness, forming a Heartless, then a Nobody would be formed, providing that the heart was strong.
But the problem is, they were just there. With no goal and no one to lead them, they would've just sat there, skulking.

The thing is, before Xehanort's experiments, there were no Heartless in the Realm of Light.

If any heart had been consumed by the darkness and formed a Heartless, then there would be Heartless in the Realm of Light.

Which means there's something we're missing.

Master Xehanort released his heart when he stole Terra's body. He released Ven's heart when he split it.

A heartless was formed in neither of those cases, even though hearts exposed to darkness are known to turn into Heartless (see: Sora's sacrifice in Hollow Bastion).

The question I have is this: did something happen in the process of Xehanort's experiments that made it possible for a Realm of Light heart to transform into a Heartless via excess darkness?

In any case, though, if there's no Realm of Light Heartless, there's also no Heartless made from Realm of Light beings. And, if Heartless are not made from Realm of Light beings, their creation would not involve the disappearance of a body, and hence a Nobody would not have a reason to exist.

As it stands, Heartless are natural existences gone awry. Nobodies were never meant to exist.

Hence the term Nobodies.

Actually, Xehanort did find Heartless within Hollow Bastion before his experiments. Heartless were present, they were just small in number.
What was it that Yen Sid said? "The Heartless are darkness made real - and darkness yet lingers in every heart. The Heartless are fewer. But while darkness exists in a single heart, it will be difficult to eliminate them."
The mass invasion of the worlds by the Heartless was due to Xehanort and chums, true, and this broke down the barriers between the worlds, making it easier for Heartless to get to them. Nobodies will have existed before (strong hearted people may have even ventured to the Realm of Darkness and met their ends, becoming Nobodies), and due to Yen Sid's knowledge of them, he's likely encountered them before.

You forget the heart has to travel through the RoD to get to Kingdom Hearts. A RoL heart can easily become a Heartless just by its journey to Kingdom Hearts. It might not become that way in the RoL. It all depends on the level of Darkness in the heart.

That sounds like how people view the afterlife, especially on how it kinda a punishment by being evil.

Well I'm not saying Darkness = Evil. I'm only saying the level of Darkness in the heart determines how it will react once outside of the body.

But KH is very reflective of the human condition.

Whoa, whoa whoa whoa whoa. I'm a bit confused. Why if there was a chance the nobodies could have been around before the AX's experiments. Would even the lesser nobodies have the org.'s symbol? I find it hard to believe that they were all branded.

Maybe somebody painted them on?
