You're assuming Sora shared Selphie's views about the fruit being romantic in meaning, something BBS showed us hardly had to be true.
They were about to go out on a life threatening journey, one Sora knew Kairi was worried about. What's wrong with making a good luck charm?
And in the end Kairi did manage to come back home and when she 'finished' the drawing, Sora and Riku got back home too. I'd sooner relate this to Kairi's 'home representative' role than proper romance. Especially seeing how early in the series that was established, how different Sora treated Namine compared to Kairi, and how lacking the KH2 SoKai reunion was compared to almost every other reunion in the series.
