I always thought that the chess game between Xehanort and Eraqus was at The Land of Departure or Cable Town but upon closer investigation, I realized that Xehanort is younger there than he was in the opening of KHBBS, before he decides to leave the islands. So does that mean that the chess game is in Destiny Islands and Eraqus is also from there?

It's far more likely that Nomura threw out that piece of continuity and that Xehanort started his training far earlier than 3D said.

A small part of me just wants to say every human OC is from Destiny Islands unless they're explicitly shown to have come from somewhere else.

About that whole "Trailernort's even younger than Trollanort" thing, my best guess is that he actually left the islands earlier than we originally thought. The times when we see him in flashbacks (BBS and DDD) could possibly be him revisiting the islands. Unless there's an interview I missed (which is very possible), I don't think there was anything that explicitly confirmed that his little "This world is too small" quip came before he initially left...

Or this could be one big retcon and I'm running in circles trying to rationalize it. I don't really know.

I still don't think trailernort is younger than YMX. It just doesn't make any logical sense, lol. I think any appearance of being younger is likely more due to the new graphics engine than anything else tbh. Plus Eraqus and YMX refer to their Keyblade Master. The suggestion that Destiny Islands held Masters and a lineage of Keyblades this whole time and yet no mention of this exists in the present day (or even in BBS time) is just way too hard to swallow.

The main reason why I think this is them just throwing the continuity out the window is that Ben said he was told to perform Xehanort even younger than before. I also think the quote where Nomura's talking about how this scene happened before 3D means that this is an earlier version of Xehanort and not just that this happened in the timeline before 3D because of course it did.
I don't WANT that to be the case, but until Nomura clears it up that's where I'm at.

Also:

The Xehanort reports from BBS say that Xehanort didn't return to DI after he departed to train until he dropped Ven off there.

Regardless, Eraqus isn't from Destiny Islands, the scene is taking place in whatever world they're training in. The classroom, the Land of Departure Lanterns, and the GIANT KEYBLADE mounted on the wall, the chess game and their conversation about their Master and the Keyblade War kind of confirms that.

I don't know. The simplest explanation is that he isn't actually younger, lol.
That solves literally every single problem.

Them going against that just... doesn't make sense. Like what would that really serve aside from contradicting two games? What does a younger Xehanort in this scene accomplish? Nothing.

(he doesn't even really sound that different tbh)

There have been times where they've chosen style and surprise over coherency in storytelling, though. Although I also don't think this Xehanort is younger than the one from KH3D.

I try not to be a pessimist about this series but you're absolutely right. Remember when Yen Sid redecorated or when Zexion reformed as an older version of Ienzo but Xigbar came back as a 10 years younger Braig.

I'm pretty sure YMX is meant to be like 16 in KH3D (he's like the same height as Riku).
Trailernort does not look that much younger than 16. If anything, he's implied to be older since Eraqus is so goshdarn baby-faced in that trailer and it's clear there is a significant age gap between them.

Trailernort doesn't look that different from Trollanort aside from hair style and graphics. But this whole thing does bug me since Ben Diskin was told to sound younger (though he didn't sound that different at all, just slightly more emotive) and Nomura saying it takes place before DDD, but, well, it would.
It just doesn't make sense to make him younger. It accomplishes nothing.

Yeah. I just don't see what point this retcon-y thing would serve. Like it adds nothing?

Speaking more broadly about the Eraqus/MX thing though, it also feels kind of weird because it sort of positions it like the whole series has been this master chess game between MX and Eraqus with one side representing dark and the other representing light (the whole thing is so very LOST btw, yet another parallel between the two series)

except Eraqus has done shit all this whole time lol.

Welp, we're both at where we're at. I don't WANT it to be the case, I can't overstate that, but this is just how I see it currently.

I've also noticed that the marketing has been pushing this Eraqus vs Xehanort agenda much more than the series ever has. Eraqus has been a recurring figure since the reveal trailer which is very strange. BUT, he must have had some plan in place for Terra so that may be the giant strings he's pulling. I don't know, I'm intrigued but confused.

The "younger" or "more emotive" thing might come from the character simply being in more... ordinary circumstances. The most we've ever seen or heard from the guy was in DDD, where he was a fish out of temporal water, apparently doesn't really know what exactly his future self is planning (if the movie of 2.5 Re:Coded is anything to go by) but knows enough to bait heroes, and was basically on a mission to stalk and almost kill two boys.

Trailernort's just playing chess. He's in his own time, he probably doesn't know enough to act like a troll, and I don't think he's actively plotting to lure anyone to their deaths yet. Yeah yeah, so he's got some destiny "etched in his heart" or whatever, but maybe the guys in charge wanted him to sound a bit more normal and perhaps even slightly innocent.

He's talking about the Keyblade War, the Lost Masters, and he's staring at the most ancient Keyblade there is.

Yeah, the scene so far is practically just a paraphrased version of Jacob and MIB's first shown conversation.

The dark side goin on how the dark will always win, it always ends the same.

The light side bein all "nah, girl, it only ends once, shit before that's just progress. nothin is set in stone"
