So I'm turning 16 on September 24th, it's not that close but it's getting there and I have to start planning for what I want to do. What I really wanted was to throw a large "Sweet Sixteen" type party except I wanted it to be a masquerade with a DJ, nice decorations, and maybe my own rented area to host it in.

BUT, my mom told me that she was thinking of getting me a PS3 (something I've wanted for a VERY long time. (I'm very late but I wanna get a freakin next-gen console!)

So the dilemma is: my mom said I can either throw a mega Sweet Sixteen, get a PS3 and do something with family, or I can throw a small party and still maybe get a console. (no crazy decorations, much smaller amount of people, and the theme most likely won't work with a small group.)

What do you all think I should do?

I think you should take a dice, and roll it. Say 1 and 2 correspond to the first option, 3 and 4 to the second, and 5 and 6 to the third option. Roll it but cover up the dice before it settles. In that instant you will know exactly what it is you want, regardless of the outcome of the dice. Act on what you feel. Go with that instead of asking people who don't wholly understand the entire situation or exactly how much you want each of them.

Personally, I'd go for a small party with the possibility of a console/PS3. But, that's because of my personal hate of huge parties and lowering care of video games.

But, this is about you. So, I recommend you just think about it carefully, or do something like what Orion suggested.

The best I can say is the mega party.
Your only 16 once. All the people I know who didnt have a sweet 16/quinceneria regret it. You can wait till christmas or maybe even start working (you are turning 16) and save up for the PS3.

Have a 'close friends' party, like 3 or 4 good friends and go to the pictures, your parents will probably organise a 'family' party with aunts, uncles, cousins and such, invite more friends to the family party and if it all works out right you could still get a console, or money towards it.

Yeah, I'd say small party + possibility of gift. I didn't have a big sweet sixteen, I just had two or three friends to hang out with (like every other year) and some family, and I've never regretted it. Honestly, I still don't quite get the significance of turning 16 compared to say 18 or 21. Sure you can drive, but you still usually have a ton of limitations.

But really, it depends on how badly you want a PS3 and how badly you want a big party. If it's just like "a PS3 would be nice" then I'd say have a cool party, but if you're dead set on getting a PS3, then I'd say go for it, but I would say try to have some friends over. Being social is nice.

Level 16: License, but still typically controlled by parents.

Level 18: Can watch/star in porn.

Level 21: You can do whatever you want.

We're missing out on a lot.

IF your parents are REALLY willing on throwing this party which sounds like 800+ dollars then why the hell would you pass that off for a PS3.
One difference between a party when your 18/21 and 16: you're more expected to PAY.
But like others have said, its more or less your personal choice.
Forgot to mention big party= more gifts/MONEH. You could always still get both.

I'd go for the PS3, you probably will get more enjoyment out of it in the long term and a nice dinner is still a good time on your birthday.

your 15 year old friends aren't going to be fancy/classy enough to stick to and/or even give a shit about your venetian mask theme. it's going to be a bunch of awkward kids and bowls of cheetos

also the reason your parents gave you 3 options, 2 of which are normal/reasonable gifts, is because you're asking way too much of them with this party idea. renting out places and catering to a bunch of 15 year olds who ultimately don't give a shit, and next week's episode of pokemon will rate about as high on their memories as your party, is really not a fulfilling experience as both a parent and an owner of a bank account.

also i hate to break this to everyone (see: Vani), but turning 16, or just about any other age society arbitrarily decided is a big deal for some reason, is not actually anything significant
