It really is odd how the pace of the KH3 manga just feels like it woulda been finished in like 2020 via a weekly schedule.

I think that Amano was under the impression that he had time, there's no need to rush things, and it would end when the story reaches its conclusion. And then suddenly that wasn't the case and he only had a certain amount of chapters left.

I do find it wild that he was given as much time as he needed for KH2 to the point where it was outright put on hold for a bit so he adapt Days, but the KH3 manga ending is being rushed. I understand that it happened a long time ago and the publishing landscape is completely different now, but seeing the same series being treated so differently is eye-opening.

Okay, looks like we’re heading straight for the last battle with Xehanort, judging by the chapter thumbnail. The chapter’s title is 三人で一人前[san-ri de ichi-ri mae], which I assume is the Japanese equivalent of the “Three Half-Pints”.

If you have the Gangan Online app, you can read it now. Otherwise you’ll be waiting a couple weeks to read it on the website

Sounds similar to Bleach, where Kubo took his sweet time and then it's like he suddenly realised he had a month to finish out a decade's worth of story.

Wasn’t that a combo of health issues and editors pushing him to wrap it up? Or am I thinking of Yu-Gi-Oh..?

On that note, since I don’t have the app, I don’t know if this the actual end to the manga or if he’s going through to the Re:Mind material next

From what I recall, those were the running theories, but then we found out that he had to know about it at least a year in advance.

However, I would believe there were health issues. It's a horribly brutal toxic industry. I don't know how Oda does it.

Volume 2 of Panini's releases comes out in the UK on November 5, 2024. Fingers crossed that they continue on afterwards because it'd be incredibly disappointing if they pull a Tokyopop and just end there (because that's where Yen Press's releases stopped after they lost the license).

Oh and maybe re-release the novels too. I'm still on the hunt for those to complete the collection, managed to nab Volume 2 of KHII's novel for a decent price and now waiting for it to arrive.

Still interesting how he handled it. And given he didn't have a Keyblade in his hand, I'd almost mistake it for Anti-Form.

Maybe this is also how Drive forms would’ve been handled if Amano chose to adapt them.

Anywho, here’s the chapter rundown. After what is assumed to be a tiring climb for our heroes, the SDG trio have made it to the top of Scala ad Caelum, where Xehanort awaits. We get flash panels of the battle where we see different attacks being used on both sides. Sora matching and dodging Xehanort, Donald firing magic flares, Goofy shielding the trio from a barrage of light rays. Xehanort then raises a platform for the second phase of the fight, then used the X-Blade to take away Sora’s light, blinding and inducing Rage Form on him.

Rather than seeing how Sora fights with it physically, we get a look inside his head. He can barely see anything, Xehanort appears as a shadow, taunting him, and when Sora tries to strike at him, he obliterates a piece of the building they were on. Sora takes notice that he feels an overwhelming sense of power within him, and when he tries to use it, he’s definitely getting some clean hits. Unfortunately those hits are on Donald and Goofy, who manage to snap him out of Rage Form. Sora immediately apologises, not realising what he’d done, though thankfully Donald and Goofy are still kicking.

Then we read this phrase,「そのまま闇に染まればよかったものを」. I’m not sure if it’s Sora or Xehanort who’s speaking here, but Google translates it to “I should have just let myself be stained by the darkness.” Though I imagine if it’s Sora talking, he’s actually saying he shouldn’t have, while if it was Xehanort, the “I” and “myself” would be “you” and “yourself” since he’d be talking to Sora.

Anyway, we get to Xehanort firing his final beam at the trio, Sora blocking it to protect Donald and Goofy. He’s thinking back to everyone trying to keep Kingdom Hearts shut, he’s trying his best to hold out, but he’s fading fast. But before it’s game over, we see Donald and Goofy rise to help Sora finish Xehanort off with a Trinity beam.

The chapter ends with Xehanort claiming that it’s too late, and when Sora asks what will happen, Xehanort says(and I’m doing a rough translation), “Purification.. the world will reset to its original state.”

Next chapter is most likely going to be the aftermath, with Xehanort explaining his motives, everyone else coming in and Eraqus and Xehanort parting to the great beyond(or wherever they go) together, Kingdom Hearts being sealed and Sora going off to find Kairi. Whether or not we get any Re:Mind material adapted will most likely be confirmed then.

I wouldn't really say "hits" lol

More like hit singular.

Of course this isn't the first time Amano adapted a form for basically a single panel. Way back in KH2 he used like Final Form for a single panel just to symbolize Roxas' power after he and Sora did the "second" merge post-fight and it was kinda never really followed up on.

But yeah the next chapter is gonna be an abridged version of the ending no doubt.

I did say the hits were on Donald and Goofy😅

But yeah, from the panels, you’d think the only damage Xehanort took was from the giant Trinity Beam.

Well, looks like chapter 39 is on the app now. The chapter title apparently translates to “The One Who Saves The World”.

We’ll be waiting till the 21st before it hits Gangan’s website, though we can see Sora talking in the featured preview panel. The text(with Google Translation) reads “本当の強者は世界の運命を握つたりしない(Really strong people don't hold the fate of the world in their hands), そんな力は持たないよ!!! (I don't have that kind of power!!!)” I’m guessing this is what the English game script translates to be part of Sora’s leader speech, about accepting that destiny is beyond their control.

EDIT: OKAY, looks like we’re only getting mainline KH3 for the serialisation. Apparently chapter 40 will be the last one.

Probably. And if Amano decides to add any other extra stuff, it’ll likely be added in the last volume. Like how he made a mini chapter out of the scene of Sora seeing Kairi’s drawn in Paopu fruit from KH2’s credits in volume 10/omnibus 4.

Yep, think it's safe to say the Re:Mind content isn't going to be covered in the manga so if you're looking for that stuff on page than the KHIII light novel is about as close as you're going to get. I'll leave my main thoughts until after the last chapters have come out but man, as far as KH manga adaptations go this one was disappointingly underwhelming.
