Hell if I know?
If there's already a thread like this...whoops.

Anyway,in your opinion what do you think is the greatest game ever made and why?

I would have to say Resident Evil 2 because everything was an improvement on the original.
The voice acting got better (but that's not saying much), the graphics got better, the storyline was better and the characters and enemys got alot better too.

Anyway, over to you.

Monster Hunter Freedom. Just because it's so much better than any game (except LoZ, but that's a shoe in for this anyways, so I didn't say it) I've ever played.

E-E-E-E-EPIC.

My choices are LoZ, Smash Bros, and Guitar Hero. Why? Those are the few games that I can play and never get tired of.

EDIT: If anyone brings up KH, I will scream. lol

It'd be hard for me to choose the one game I believe is the greatest of all time. Pretty much every game mentioned thus far in this thread is a favorite of mine. I can't choose just one game. But I can give you two.

Earthbound (SNES) - One of the greatests RPGs I've ever experienced, period. I discovered it when I was about ten or so, and it's what really got me addicted to RPGs. The story is so quirky and unbelieveable, but so loveable at the same time. The characters are doubly so (Mr. Saturn, anyone?). It's one of those games that you can pick up and play and never want to put down. It's just so entertaining. In my opinion, it is hands down the greatest RPG ever made. I'd even put it over games like Oblivion and any of the FF's (that's blasphemy to some of you, I'm sure).

Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX, coming October on the PSP) - The absolute best of the FF series, in my opinion (despite the fact that it's not part of the main series). It had a rich and inviting story that really sucked you in. The political intrigue mixed with religious dogma made for such an awesome story. That's what I loved most about it. And the gameplay was the best this side of Ogre Battle. It's another game that's hard to put down, even when you're spending hours alone on just levelling. It virtually never gets boring.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

The greatest RPG I've ever played. Intuitive and engaging gameplay, long and challenging dungeons and bosses, and time travel (Not much, but some). The powers of the masks are the most unique things I've ever seen, especially the powers of the Deku, Goron, Zora, and Fierce Deity's masks. The final battle against Majora's Mask/Incarnation/Wrath was, and will always be, my favorite boss battle.

I have two for this one.

My first one is Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX), which is easily the best Final Fantasy game out there. The story is so deep, entertaining, and never gets old. In fact, I find the story to be more interesting every time I play it. (Most likely because I understand it a little more each time. Indeed, the story can be a bit complicated.) Also, the game itself is a blast, and you could play for hours on end. I remember the first time I played it; I loved it, but at the same time I was about 7, so I had the hardest time beating some of the fights. Keep in mind, this game is tough. Also, it has infinite replay ability, since each time through you can make the game different. (Different jobs, do the battles differently, etc.) Also, I'm going to say that Final Fantasy Tactics has the best soundtrack in the entire video game industry. (Next to my other "Greatest" game vote.)

Another game that deserves the mention is Xenogears (PSX). Some may disagree, due to the fact that it's more of a movie than a game, but that's their loss. However, the story is, without doubt, the deepest, most involving of its time. The characters are phenomenal, and each are developed greatly. Also, as I said before, the soundtrack is excellent, although not quite as good as FFT's soundtrack. The gameplay is also very intriguing and fun, and any game where you pilot giant robots is bad ass.

My gut instinct tells me Halo. The gameplay is entertaining to me, but its more so that Halo has a diverse, mysterious world. Its far greater and deeper than i think most pay attention to. THe way things are gearing up for halo 3, which is supposedly going to answer the many questions of the Halo universe, I'm thinking that its not going to be just hype when it hits the shelves, as Halo 2 was.

In fact, if you go to Halo3.com, you'll already find some pretty crazy things. I'm willing to bet Halo 3 will take the cake, but that will be in a few months time.

HOWEVER:

from what i have seen, the most popular games out there on consoles have been, in the long run, the Zelda games, atleast so far as i can tell. it is possible that longer series of games detract from eachother.

In the end, how can you truely decide which game is greatest? all games cater to a different audience, with different gameplay styles, and what not. For example, online play with Medal of Honor, Allied Assault is still amazing fun for me, even more so than some of the big awesome games i've been playing now, including halo, but thats just me.

I think this really deserves more of a "best in a category" deal, rather than overall, because after a while they can't compare anymore.

I really can't pick just one game, so I hope you don't mind that I pick out some series instead.

I have to say that The Legend of Zelda has got to be one of the best franchises around. Virtually every game in the series has been so engrossing and addictive that it's truely hard to put the controller down and stop playing, if only for a bathroom break. Each game in the series has always mangaed to find a way to make the Zelda formula feel fresh every time a new game is released.

I also think that the Super Smash Bros and Touhou series should get honorable mention, as both are also incredibly fun and entertaining.

I feel that the Golden Sun series was one of the best RPGs created. I, personally, feel it is up there with LoZ and Mario. The gameplay and story were great. Boss battles were good. Great graphics for a GBA game. It wasn't a short adventure. Though it is only two games long, it left off for a third installment. It is basically a great game that I feel deserves to be recognized.

I think this really deserves more of a "best in a category" deal, rather than overall, because after a while they can't compare anymore.

So what you're saying is that it should be something like this:

Best First Person Shooter: Dues Ex

Best Third Person Shooter: Max Payne, Freedom Fighters, or Star Wars Battlefront

Best Stealth Game: Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence

Best Racing Game: Mario Cart: Double Dash(lol)

Best RPG: Chrono Trigger

ect. . .
