This roleplay has started, and the thread is located here.
First and foremost: Because the events of this roleplay are/will be so far removed from those of the original anime and manga, very little knowledge of the events in the series will be necessary. Reading a few Wikipedia pages (here) should be all you need. As for concepts and powers and such, actually watching/reading it greatly helps.
Second: This RP is happening in the future. No questions asked. Other than that, any suggestions or help is welcome and encouraged.
This RP will take place roughly 1000 years after the events of the Gurren-Lagann anime/manga series. The Spiral Nemesis has returned once more to endanger the universe.
Spoiler Show(All terms not fully explained will be detailed in the Terminology section)
A thousand years is a lot of time for things to happen. When a race naturally has access to Spiral Energy, there is even more capacity for events to occur on larger scales. As such, in the space of a millennium, the universe has gone from nearly perfect safety, to within a century of its imminent destruction.
It has been one thousand years since the Great Spiral Uprising, the series of escalating battles over the course of seven years that saw the ultimate freedom of the Spiral Race realised. It would seem almost fitting that one thousand years of repression would so quickly be undone at the hands of such capable beings and the untapped powers they held within their bodies. At the very beginning, it started with two people, Kamina and Shimon of the underground Jeeha village. Small revelations over a few days eventually saw the two break out of their village and start the revolution that would free the Spiral Race, but also see the universe edge closer and closer to its doom.
The very crux of Spiral Energy is the ability to both grow or evolve, and to create something from nothing. In more understandable terms, it would be pulling a resounding victory out of a fight whose outcome seemed doomed to be certain and inescapable defeat and be forever stronger afterwards.. While there is that restorative and creative ability of Spiral Energy, there is also a fatal side to it on the cosmological scale. The amount of matter in the universe is more less tied to the amount of Spiral Energy in the universe. The more there is of the latter, the more there will be of the former. And of course, with more matter comes more stars comes more planets and thus greater capacity for new Spiral Beings to come into existence.
This process, which Shimon promised to the Anti-Spirals (former Spirals who gave up their Spiral Powers after seeing the inevitable chaos it could bring), that he would make sure the Spiral Nemesis would never occur.
After seven hundred years, there were only three people left of the original Great Gurren Brigade from the Great Spiral Uprising; Shimon, who was granted a super-extended lifespan upon nominating himself as a guardan to avert the Spiral Nemesis; Viral, the Beastman granted immortality by the former protector of Earth, Lord Genome; and Leeron, the main engineer and technological genius of the Great Gurren Brigade, who had uploaded his consciousness to the flagship of the Spirals, the Chouginga Dai-Gurren. At the first emergence of the Zeroes, the ultimate opposites of the Spirals, these three, along with the ship, were removed from the universe and imprisoned in an alternate reality.
As such, their guiding hand was removed from the Spirals, who multiplied immensely over three hundred years and have come so close to the Spiral Nemesis that the emergence of the Zeroes has become an apparent necessity for the universe's survival. Zeroes rely on the same powers of the Spirals, in fact, any Zero was formerly a Spiral, except with one big difference. They operate o[n the flipside of the coin. Their power is ultimate destruction and reversion of evolution. A fault induced by intense radiation caused the Zero Gene (the gene that exists within all Spiral Beings) caused their natural detection of the Spiral Nemesis to be much higher, and thus came out three hundred years earlier than the majority. This first emergence of the Zeroes saw Shimon, Viral, Leeron and all levels of the Gurren-Lagann Ganmen trapped in an alternate reality.
Now, the effects of the Spiral Nemesis are near-undeniable: The night sky is so well lit by stars from all sides their is virtually no absolute shade, and it is not uncommon that planets, solar systems, or even entire galaxies, can be torn to pieces or hurtled out of kilter by the unusual and immense gravitational effects.
As usual, the Spirals, with a tentative but long-existing alliance with the Beastmen, once more seek to fight to the very end, to struggle to live in a universe close to destined to die. The Zeroes, paired with the re-emerged Anti-Spirals, also in their own last-ditch efforts, seek to lower Spiral Being numbers to an insane degree and destroy more than ten trillion galaxies in order to temporarily, if not forever, delay the Spiral Nemesis.
A medium-sized attack has been reported on a Spiral base in a galaxy nearby to the Milky Way. In terms of battles of this kind, it is medium, but in human terms, it is gigantic. Ships the size of continents soar across the sky at blinding speeds, dropping deadly payloads and unloading mechs of various kinds the size of several-story buildings and larger. The Spirals and Beastmen are quick to retaliate, but are at a loss as to how the Zeroes and Anti-Spirals were able to both locate the sector and travel there unnoticed. But such matters are trivial as explosions the size of cities rock the planet. What needs to happen now is battle, and nothing else.
Growth, Survival, Destruction and Preservation.
Which side will you take in the battle that determines the fate of the universe?
Spoiler Show(Will be updated as necessary)
Spiral Energy:
The power that all Spiral Beings are born with. Sometimes, non-Spirals can obtain the power, but such instances are extremely rare. The power of Spiral Energy is certainly great; It means that I could, with the proper stimuli, magically grow wings and start flying around. But that is with the correct stimuli. Far more often than not, Spiral Energy is used to its greatest degree in fighting with Ganmen. An unusual trait of Spiral Energy is that it is nearly impossible to direct it on one's own body. Such cases of this are even rarer than those of non-Spirals gaining Spiral powers. Spiral Energy, in its regenerative powers and combat capabilities, are typically best channelled through a Ganmen. The effects on the Ganmen can be to 'heal' the damage of it, or cause it to increase its size in some form, or greatly increase its specifications, such as speed, strength and targeting.
Zero Energy is the only thing capable of totally nullifying and destroying Spiral Energy.
Zero Energy:
A power only gained when one, typically unwillingly, has their Zero Gene activated. The gene is a typically dormant feature of all Spirals that causes the Spiral to lose all their normal powers and instead gain opposite ones, and their thoughts stay fairly similar, save for seeking the destruction of anything Spiral. When implemented correctly, Zero Energy can produce necrosis in organic bodies, and accelerate the aging and degradation process of inorganic objects. At its very best, it can completely eradicate them, without leaving a trace. An interesting trait of Zero Energy is the ability to temporarily re-create anything the Zero has destroyed and use for a short while as they see fit, before fading once more, permanently.
Spiral Energy is the only thing capable of totally nullifying and destroying Zero Energy.
Spiral Nemesis:
The cosmological-scale phenomenon where a massive increase in the matter in the universe accompanies a similarly massive growth of Spiral Energy. Eventually, the matter in the universe becomes so much that one objects pulls on another and come together with such density as to form a black hole in a run-away process that sucks in all matter in the universe, leaving behind an empty and lifeless void. It is this that Anti-Spirals and Zeroes want to avoid, and so too do the Spirals and Beastmen, but the former do not want to be destroyed either, and the latter follow along with their long-standing alliance with the Spirals.
Ganmen:
The typically-humanoid machines whose ultimate purpose is to combat beings who oppose the Spiral. They become most powerful when piloted by Spiral Beings, and become deadly on a galactic scale when fuelled with the Spiral Energy of dozens of Spiral Warriors. When one becomes a Zero or Anti-Spiral, their Ganmen, tied to their Spiral Signature, changes to accommodate for the altered being.
Technology:
In this universe a thousand years ahead of the Gurren-Lagann series, which was advanced enough, technology is truly an astonishing thing. Nanotechnology is as common in people as cells, alchemy or transmutation is an easy task for similarly miniature technologies, and transport with the largest of ships crosses galactic distances in minutes. Machines and structures are built on astonishing scales and complexity, such that Ringworlds, orbitals, and other large inhabited structures are common throughout the universe.
Pronunciations, etc:
I watched the anime in Japanese with English subtitles. As such, and as the thread creator, names and such will be as they are said in the anime or translated.
For instance, I will refer to the later leader of the Great Gurren Brigade as Shimon, because I think Simon sounds like a particularly non-cool and -epic name for such a character.
Littner, as in Yoko's surname and the village, is no such thing. It is Ritona.
It's not Gunmen, it's Ganmen, simply because, since we will be dealing with ship crew in military fashions, there might be gunners who some refer to as gunmen.
For the rest, being this far removed from the series, it shouldn't need specific mentioning. But in general, follow things like mentioned above.
Spoiler Show(Prior knowledge helps)
Spirals: Those imbued with the Spiral and the power it offers. The ultimate Spiral form, that is, the one that best taps into their Spiral Powers, are humans. That's not to say that there are others; there are thousand of other sentient Spiral species. Anything capable of evolution and growth on a species and non-personal level is a Spiral Being. Thus, Spirals are not limited to humans, they can be any kind of creature. They are the cause of the Spiral Nemesis, and tend to adopt an approach of 'let's fight it with all our might, that it might go away like our other problems' that doesn't really help the problem at hand. Nevertheless, it is the nature of those with power to use it, and so Spirals are bound to adopt an approach that involves battle. The mark of a true Spiral Warrior is a spiral-patterned iris. Of the four races, they are the most common. Spirals are capable of becoming Zeroes and Anti-Spirals, but not Beastmen.
Beastmen: Beings born without the Spiral. the name Beastman came from the assortment of creatures that terrorised the populace of Earth while they were still repressed. Their appearance and creature type is not limited to specifically animalian in nature, but it is a common feature among most of them. At the last, they might appear human-like to a fair degree, but have obvious features, such as pointed ears and teeth, a mane, unusual bodily joints, and the like. They are the most skilled of the four races at things mechanical- and engineering-based, and thus they are the main producers of Ganmen in the universe. Despite being the second-most common of the four races, Beastmen are incapable of reproduction, and must clone themselves in order to continue as a race. Genetic modifcation during the cloning process allows for biodiversity of the Beastmen species. Beastmen are capable, in extreme cases, of being imbued with Spiral powers, but can not, at any stage, become Zeroes or Anti-Spirals.
Zeroes: The ultimate opposites of Spirals, although they do not change appearance at all in the transformation process. They are the least common of the four groups, but can reproduce in much the same way that Spirals do, an unusual but useful trait retained by the former Spirals Zeroes are only capable of changing to Anti-Spirals. When the Zero Gene switches on, it stays on. Any attempt to change a Zero back to a Spiral has resulted in the death of the being.
Anti-Spirals: Second-least common of the four races, most Anti-Spirals are in fact of the billions that sealed away their evolution and entered a deep sleep thousands of years ago. While their former 'leader' who fought the Great Gurren-Brigade, did entrust the Spiral race to keep the universe safe, it would appear they lied or couldn't be trusted, and so a great number of Anti-Spirals have come out of their deep rest to pilot the ships and mechs they long ago abandoned. Most of their modern-ish technology is salvaged or put together from spare parts of much newer mechs. Spirals are utterly incapable of changing into any other being.
APPLICATION FORM:
Your character must be one of the four races. Sorry, no robots, unless you later upload your consciousness. Also, if you're to have more than one character, keep all of them in one of the two greater alliances. It's no fun having to watch and roleplay you fighting yourself. There are no characters related to Shimon, Viral, Leeron, or any of the characters in the original series, unless of course one was suggested at, such as Yoko's kid and that kid of one of the Black Brotherhood chicks.
Also note that in having multiple characters, they could be part of a specialist squad of some description. You're not limited to having multiple characters that rarely interact.
Note: Entries with an asterisk (*) are necessary. Anything else is on an optional/'if there is one use one' basis.

Spoiler ShowThe very highest military leader in each race is the Grand Admiral. He holds ultimate military authority, and not even the 'president' can call off the Grand Admiral should he wish for something that is strategically nonsensical. While the Grand Admiral might hold ultimate power, they typically never go into combat and are kept out of it because of their value as strategists. The best battlers are typically below Admiral, which is below Grand Admiral.
Rank control increases on an area-based scale. The lowest is a long soldier, the next is one who controls neighbourhood or city-sized areas, then states and provinces, then countries, continents, planets, solar systems, galactic quadrants, whole galaxies, galaxy clusters, and then forces across the whole universe. That last one is Grand Admiral.
The most experienced roleplayer in each race will also be given roleplay co-manager rights and privileges (and duties, if they want), and are essentially the strongest guiding force for the other roleplayers of that race.
