Not only this. In the latest interview Nomura also stresses again (for the third time now) that the heartless of the Org members other than Xehanort aren't anything special and should be not paid much attention to:

Spoiler Spoiler Show

so the bigger heartless arent equivelants of nobodies.

they could have been created by the nobodies, but they arent the actual nobody.

Sorry if this has been asked already. I read most of the posts in this thread, but not all, so I apologize in advance.

Obviously Xehanort didn't create the heartless. They have been around for as long as humans have since Xehanort was right about light not being able to exist without darkness, and vice versa. I re-read all the Ansem/Xehanort reports last night and I was thinking, are all heartless born in the RoD, and just have to find their way out? Also, was the door that Xehanort found in the laboratory the Door To Darkness? And was Xehanort's opening of the DtD the first time Heartless have ever escaped the RoD?

And assuming my above assumptions are all accurate, why couldn't the Heartless escape beforehand? Ansem clearly states in the Secret reports that he travels too and from the RoD via the Dark Corridors, so why couldn't the heartless?

If someone could clear this all up, I'd be very grateful. :)

Ok, lemme try to untingle some of the things you threw together. ;)

It's true that Xehanort didn't create the heartless, they are around as long as the Realm of Darkness exists.

Normally all heartless are born in the RoD, yes.

No, the Door to Darkness can only be opened by bringing the hearts of the seven princesses of heart together. The Door to Darkness opens then at the exact spot where the true Kingdom Hearts is in the RoD.
It is an alternative way to reach the true Kingdom Hearts instead of using the X-blade.

The door Xehanort found in the basement of the Radiant Garden castle was presumably the door to Radiant Garden's heart, which caused the invisible walls that protected and separated the worlds to shatter.
This gave the heartless presumably access to the worlds in the Realm of Light.

By the time Ansem can travel from and to the RoD via dark corridor the heartless can do so as well. After the walls between the worlds crumbled they were all vulnerable to attack.
At the times of BBS that wasn't the case and there was no direct connection with the RoD so the heartless from the RoD (the purebloods) didn't had the means to invade on their own.

Oooh okay. I remember the part about the door to the world's heart, but I just kind of assumed that maybe he didn't know what too call such a door, and then as time passed it just became known as the Door To Darkness.

I'm still a little confused about one thing though. When Xehanort opened the door to the world's heart and destroyed the barriers between worlds, did that also destroy a barrier between the RoL and the RoD and grant the Heartless access to the RoL?

Those doors haven't got an official name I think, it was however one just like the door seen in the cave at Destiny Islands, the location of the world's keyhole which leads to the heart of that world.

The Door to Darkness is that big white door at the end of KH 1 which Sora and Mickey had to close using two keyblades.

If a barrier between those realms exist, I doubt that would be destroyed as well since then the vast darkness of the RoD itself would flood into the RoL possibly destroying it outright.
Xehanort opening the door destroyed the defenses of the world themselves, the walls. They were fully intact during BBS and that's why the heartless couldn't reach worlds in the RoL and most likely even most In-between worlds like Land of Departure.
Master Xehanort is just so exceptionally strong with darkness that he managed to summon a batch of twenty or so to the keyblade graveyard.

Ah. I keep forgetting that some worlds exist in different realms. Alright. Everything makes sense now.

Thanks. :)

A question I have:

Will we ever see grittier, scarier Heartless or those from the Kingdom Hearts 1 era, like the first time we fought them in Dream World or Destiny Islands? The heartless lost their scariness in KHII (which Nobodies thankfully replaced due to their sheer competence as enemies) and I would love it if they became more menacing in KH3, kind of like how the Flood became more menacing throughout the Halo series. Of course, Disney would have to okay it first, but I think Square can accomplish that by arguing that it can create more money.

I always suspected this too, until

Spoiler Spoiler Show

I think what he meant was that for any Nobody. Not just the Organization.

Since he pointed out that it's been said that not everyone creates a Nobody. It's only if the heart is strong then they create a Nobody.
The Organization just have stronger hearts.

"If someone of a strong heart and will- be them evil or good- becomes a Heartless, the empty shell they leave behind begins to act with a will of its own."

Spoiler Spoiler Show

So basically, he was saying that the bigger Heartless, like the bosses were the Heartless of regular Nobodies, and not the Organization.
It's possible IMO. But it still doesn't matter for either groups.

It is fun to speculate, that's basically the reason why points like this are left open-ended. So that fans have the ability to dig into their imagination and come up with whatever they want. It adds more fun for the person/player.

It's just when people insist that they are right about it and don't believe that "who's Heartless is who's" doesn't matter at all, it can get annoying trying to explain it. Not that all people do that.
