How come Riku never turned into a heartless?

He was probably on his way to becoming a Heartless, judging from the pain he felt after he lost the Keyblade a second time to Sora in Hollow Bastion. He held on for as long as he did because of his strong heart. Ansem possessed him before he could become one, however.

The thing is you need to define better what 'invade' save. Save for the Princesses, every Heart anywhere has Darkness inside it. It's giving into that Darkness that turns you into a Heartless, and that is something Riku never did. He held on despite it all.

Ansem possessed him before he could become one, however.

Otherwise Riku's vessel would've became a Nobody and for Ansem, that would've been counter productive.

Yeah, that is mostly it. Riku has a strong heart, he held onto it with all of his might and that in part prevented him from becoming a heartless.

In part? I'd say that was all that kept him from becoming a Heartless.

No you guys are idiots you turn into a heartless when you lose your heart or if it's destroyed if heartless and nobodys are only made by sucuming to darkness then terra would be a heartless and riku would be a heartless because the both lingered in it and used it to become stronger and if that were true roxas power wouldn't come from the light

Riku did harness and utilize the power of darkness. However, he didn't let that darkness overcome his heart. He was pretty much about to become a heartless, but he goes on the "road to dawn" eventually.

Isn't his keyblade called "The Road to Dawn"? That's what it said in KH2.

Way to Dawn. And Way to Dawn and Soul Eater are two different weapons. Soul Eater isn't really a Keyblade but somehow becomes Way to Dawn, which is.

Using the darknesses is not the same thing as giving in to them. A slight difference that changes everything in Riku's case.

Using the darknesses is not the same thing as giving in to them. A slight difference that changes everything in Riku's case.

It's... not that slight a difference. People can use the Darkness and still give into it, and give into it without controling it. Just about everyone we've seen use it up to now however also gave into it, hence Mickey's statement in CoM that until he met Riku, he was certain the Darkness was all bad. So I'd say it's a big difference XD;

You missed the part where he had more than enough Darkness in it. He just learned to work with it instead of battling it, as shown in CoM.

Because it's his Darkness. It's every last bit a part of him as the Light.

Seeing how none of us know exactly how Riku got around to wielding again? That's a pretty darn good question.

The only thing we DO know is that Nomura confirmed the SE changed into the WttD, and Riku called the WttD "Soul Eater" in game as he had no other name for it xD;

Yeah like everyone stated, Riku's heart was so strong that he was able to resist his heart from being over taken by the darkness. Those who are over taken usually become heartless. Same concept could apply to why Riku was able to control Xehanort's Heartless without losing his will to Xehanort.

Well yeah. Though Riku originally had a heart capable for wielding the Keyblade. He was the chosen wielder of the Kingdom Key. I guess since his heart was capabale of wielding a Keyblade, he just got one, or something to those effects. I remember something about Nomura saying that Keyblades just don't sprout up from anything. The soul eater is probably special to begin with... Almost like he got the Keyblade for that weapon, or something.

I'll have to look for the interview, cause I remember Nomura saying something like that...

He did indeed said it. That Keyblades didn't come out of nowhere, that if you got a Keyblade not by the "proper" way (which we don't even know what it is, seeing how we only got to see how Sora got his actualy Keyblade [differentiating from wielding abilities which no doubt came from the Destati, going by Roxas] and he stole it from Riku who got it from another wielder in an unknown way) it has a special meaning, and that the Soul Eater transformed into the WttD.

I believe the SE was utilizing Riku's Wielding abilities and therefore it evolving into a proper Keyblade isn't a surprise to me.

TAV originally not having Keychains but getting Keychains along the way. Unless of course it was retconned out completely and they have Keychains period now. They're apprentices that eventually get Keychains after Ven had a Destati and Aqua and Terra were to go through the Masterhood Exams.

So, what's a Keyblade without a Keychain? Just a weapon forged through one's heart alignment and power? I would like to think of the three weapons presented to Sora during the Dive into the Heart section as examples of such. Perhaps foundations in a sense.

Like how the soul eater is not a Keyblade however, it is a suitable foundation for one. I always wondered what happened to the weapon(s) Sora picked during the dive into the heart section Was the Kingdom Key's Keychain some how mounted unto the weapon he picked? But how come that weapon was gone after Riku took the "keychain"? Sora should have been left behind with the base for what he used to maintain the Keyblade.

Then again, you said Sora wasn't trained, or specialized in such a thing.

Of course this is all speculation...
