Maybe, he was swallowed by the Darkness or something, which could explain why he has yellow/gold eyes.

Mmm... Maybe. Perhaps he and the other apprentices are beginning to lose their hearts. Perhaps it's the first effect of a prolongated exposition to Darkness. There are quite a few possibilities.
