If anyone remembers a specific flashback from KH, where Sora see's a much younger Kairi at Hollow Bastion speaking to her Grandma, you'll remember that Kairi's Grandma told a story to her.
It's the first part that's mainly important, how she talks about people fighting over the light, and now with the new details from the FM+ secret ending, I think that it could be related somewhat. Perhaps this is a reminiscent of the Keyblade War put into the form of a childrens fairytale, which would suggest that the movie took place very much in the past.
It would also suggest that everyone in the movie was fighting for the same thing, the light. Perhaps one faction to preserve it, the other to steal it, or perhaps it was exactly as the story said and they where just being selfish. It could have been they were even fighting for control of Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts being the light and the warriors from each side wanted to keep it for themselves. It's actually pretty probable to say that there were many more sides of the war, not just A vs B. And that some of the factions only contained one person. I wouldn't say it was armies against armies, but small groups against small groups.
An interesting note in the movie that as they start to fight the world around them turns dark. It's probably not related, but cool to point out.
Long ago, people lived in peace, bathed in the warmth of light. Everyone loved the light. Then people began to fight over it. They wanted to keep it for themselves. And darkness was born in their hearts. The darkness spread, swallowing the light and many people's hearts. It covered everything, and the world disappeared. But small fragments of light survived... in the hearts of children. With these fragments of light, children rebuilt the lost world. It's the world we live in now. But the true light sleeps deep within the darkness. That's why the worlds are still scattered, divided from each other. But someday, a door to the innermost darkness will open. And the true light will return. So listen, child. Even in the deepest darkness, there will always be a light to guide you. Believe in the light, and the darkness will never defeat you. Your heart will shine with its power and push the darkness away.
