jeez, people, try wearing a skirt in the style of KHII Kairi and your movements are horribly restricted by that kind of miniskirt unless you want to offer hundreds of panty-shots and full-ass views to those around you.
In that type of skirt I can't even spread my legs comfortably. Or run comfortably. Or kick a classmate comfortably.

See, I think it would be impractical for running if it were below the knee. Kairis KH2 skirt was still flowey despite how short it is.
Below the knee(mid calf or lower) is where it may start restricting movement. Especially when running, as you may have to hold the skirt up to run. Flowey skirt at the knee seems very optimal. I know this from experience.

I personally don't think the dress will be below the knee. It can't be, it can't imagine the developers choosing this kind of design for a young once-a-tomboy forever a tomboy keyblade-wielding princess. And with this in mind, I expressed my thoughts. That's it. Knee-length with that huge wide fluff opening is very comfy and allows a lot of movement without getting in the way.

The top is fine but the dressy part looks kinda odd being all big and poofy like that. Of course, part of it could be due to the art style, but it still seems too long for Kairi so I went and made a couple edits

I think many associate the mental image of a long(ish) skirt with tripping over it, enemies grabbing it or it getting stuck on something.
And while that can happen (although this skirt isn't exactly a Cinderella gigantic gown either), it's a fact as DarkGrey and others have stated that it is much more preferabile to a skin-tight skirt that would immediately restrain your legs as soon as they shift from natural position.
It's physics, really. If you stop the leg movement at the very origin of the articulation there's not much the other can do about it.
Fighting with a skirt is still a fantasy setting thing (but so is everything that isn't armor or combat gear), but I feel like they chose a good lenght for at least plausible scenarios.
Especially since as others have also said, UX's design might be portraying it a bit more... flowery than it actually is.

If Sora's 5'2 or 5'3, then Kairi's like 4'10.
I did this in 10 minutes so it's not that great and probably a little inaccurate but, yeah.
I kept the belt in the second to compare. In KH2, her belt/pouch rests low on her hips, so the belt is definitely under her bust and those black panels end at her hips. They're basically the same length too, if KHUX is accurate at all.
If Sora's 5'2 or 5'3, then Kairi's like 4'10.

The second edit looks really good! That's how to use asymmetry correctly: it reminds me of some of the dress spheres in FFX-2, and it helps the ruffles feel less tacked on and childish.The top is fine but the dressy part looks kinda odd being all big and poofy like that. Raccoons' comparison confirms what I hoped the moment I saw the image- that they've ditched that awful salmon shade from KH2. No longer will she look like sushi with zippers~<3
That said, my personal hope for the KH3 version is that they lengthen the skirt to about halfway between the knee and where her KH2 outfit stopped. That would be about the perfect length, to me.

I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking this. Top section is cool with the hoodie and arm holes, but the bottom half looks too long. I also think the ruffles(?) should be plaid all the way around.
And the boots? Totally different from everything she has ever worn. If you look at the progression of her shoes, these boots don't match up with anything. Her shoes would have some color of purple, but it looks like that has been ditched. If you look at Sora's shoe progression, he has retained yellow in his shoes despite design changes, but Kairi doesn't retain hers.
But boots can have significant meaning. For Kairi, this design choice could mean a pair of sturdy, yet fashionable boots would compliment her journey. These (combat) boots would definitely serve purpose if she plans on wielding the keyblade.
Also, it just became apparent to me that the buttons are the new zippers. RIP ZIPPER FAD.

Yep. Here's a direct comparison with an eyedropper. She's less salmon and more bubblegum.
It was a WIP version of the dress. Who knows how many changes it went through since then. It seems the buttons weren't there yet.
