Someone pointed out something that bothered me about the Kingdom Hearts 3 ending, and I’m paraphrasing their thoughts here—it never gives the player a chance to meditate on the events of the game and instead rushes straight to the conclusion. A lot of the issue with the ending isn’t what happens per se, but how it’s executed, specifically the pacing. For the first 80% of the game, it feels like barely anything happens, and then suddenly, in the last 20%, every plot thread comes together and concludes too quickly. Nothing carries as much emotional weight as it should because there’s not enough room for buildup or falling action.
This is especially evident in Xehanort’s final defeat. The scene itself is mostly fine, but as soon as it’s over, the game immediately moves on to Sora reviving Kairi, followed by a quick denouement that ends in the cliffhanger of Sora disappearing. There’s barely any time to reflect on Xehanort’s final moments before the story jumps straight into setting up the next game.
