NOOOOO, google sketchup would be a horrible program to use. It would not work very well. I suggest downloading a trial of Maya. I learned to do my face through this tutorial, it is nice for beginners. YouTube - 3D Modeling tutorial for the human head. Focus on edge flow

depends if you are going to be an artist or animator. I think Maya is much easier, and is more equipped for animation. 3DS max is often considered better for making games. But maya is better when making animations
