As much as I'd like Tibet to be free, I can't help but feel that America are all a part of the whole 'Free Tibet' thing because they don't want China to become more of a superpower.

Freeing Tibet wouldn't stop China from having the largest standing army in the world, third largest economy in the world, and nuclear capacity. It really wouldn't impede on their status as a superpower at all. It's largely just the issue of preventing violation to basic human rights that the Tibetans have been denied for so long.

In fact, it's because their a superpower with such a huge foothold in the economy no other nation really wants to intervene. Which makes sense, but it's still depressing :\

Why bother freeing Tibet? Most of the population there are Han Chinese or Sinicized Tibetans so there is really no impetus within the region to declare independence from the People's Republic of China.

Because the Tibetans who aren't Chinese immigrants are still abused heavily by the PRC. Hence the, you know, 50 years of protest.

So, in other words, they've been ruled by the Chinese for about 50 years now??

They've been involved in Tibetan affairs since the early 20th century though, and things got kind of shaky when Tibet declared independence in like 1912 or something, but it wasn't until 1950 when China invaded Tibet that things got really bad.

I'm sympathetic to most independence movements to establish new autonomous nations like Kosovo or Montenegro but you need to have the majority of the native population wanting such.

It has not happened in Tibet so there will not be much support at all from the Tibetans, who are generally at least given better living conditions that they were before those monks and the Dali Lama ruled the region.

Well, maybe they shouldn't have declared independence?? That, or they should have fought back, when China invaded.

Starting with the Great Leap Forward roughly 43 million people have died in Tibet because of China fucking with their food supply, and roughly 20 Tibetans disappear per month because of 'aggression against the Chinese government' in the form of peaceful protest.

That's not exactly an improved lifestyle.

I could pull the same agruement for Native Americans in the United States especially since they were oppressed and still are to a degree.

There is the other side of the coin to Chinese rule of Tibet just like there is with American rule over the Native American tribes that once roamed.

Yeah, except now Native Americans that attempt to make a lives for themselves can most definitely do so. If you're talking about them being oppressed on reservations, hell, it's their choice to live there instead of going out and getting real jobs/houses. Not really the same situation at all. If you're talking about the whole Trail of Tears thing, that was in the past and we've since done all we can, probably more than we should have, to compensate.

Americans could had at least honored the various treaties they made with the native American tribes instead of backstabbing them in the end.

Native Americans are still in horrid conditions in the USA in general and it is difficult when you do not have the same opporunities as your average Mr. Smith or Ms. Jones.

Not that hard to have the same opportunities if they wanted to. Im sure they could easily find a good paying job and buy a house, like the average Mr.Smith

See my above post.

Tell that to the native americans pulling huge salaries running all the casinos around the country.

Besides, in our newfangled, 'oh god it's insensitive to not treat ethnic people better than whites' world it would be incredibly easy for a native american to go to school, cruise through on his 'lol i'm not white' factor straight to college and get a good job. But instead, they choose to chill in their reservations and drink themselves to death. Yeah, we're definitely making it hard for them to get over what happened 150 years ago.

Although I do generally agree that Jackson was a tremendous dick.

Yeah, and then they don't even bother to help out the surrounding areas, which is why in most cases, it always look like they live in shitty areas, which could look alot better.

Unfortunately, Tibet will probably never be free, unless China crumbles and splits up into separate nations. And it has already shed its skin of communism to become a capitalist society, which is arguably even worse, but less chaotic.

Tibet is doomed to become Sinicized so the independence clamour from the native minority population will die down meaning us Westerners need to shut up before they begin supporting secessionist movements in the West such as Quebec, the Basques of Spain and France, etc.
