I watched the livestream from the command center for about two hours, and I watched as they all cheered when they found out that Curiosity had landed.
It's great to see their efforts and hours of planning and working have paid off. Did anyone else see the pics that the lab first took? They were of the horizon on Mars, I think.

Saw it with about fifty other people at a visual lab at my university. Pretty cool, had all the feeds running on different big screens. I know I didn't take a part in it, but I couldn't help but smile and get a warm feeling when I saw everyone at their consoles in the command centre erupt into applause.
^ I sort of felt that way as well. I had two monitors, each with a different feed (control room + simulation). Felt good.

While I may how no interest in science anymore, I always dreamed of being able to go to Mars. It's one of my favorite planets. So you guys are saying actual humans landed on Mars then? It wasn't just some rover? How long ago did they leave? I need deets man!

Curiosity is just a rover. That'd be some crazy shit if humans were on Mars right now. ;p

So this thing only took a year to get to Mars?
About 8 months, so almost a year.
Also, that thing was traveling at nearly 5 km/s on its descent to Mars (upper atmosphere). Damn.

When I was younger, I read an article that stated that it would take 3 to get to Mars and another 3 to get to Earth. Granted this was with astronauts on board but still I guess technology has advanced since then (obviously
).And yeah, 5 km/s is pretty fucking fast.

Also, a manned crew with proper equipment could reach Mars in about seven months. They ran the ship on auto-pilot so it had to run a but slow to account for potential AI error.

Interesting, think of the potential resources that can be mined and brought back as such travel becomes streamlined. A great opportunity awaits us here.

That's likely a couple decades and a few billion dollars away, however, and so very capitalistic of you. Although, I'm no better. I wanna open up the first Domino's pizza on Mars. Not to mention the tourist and commercial traffic that will come through once civilization reaches outward and gets a foothold. Hell, an entire space travel industry could spring up around the idea, ie commercial airlines.
