So it's Sunday night and I just witnessed Animal Planet's brand new documentary episode called Mermaids.animal.discovery.com/tv/monster-week/mermaids/evidence.html

So I've personally thought it to be something that could be possible, so I found this interesting. The only thing is that they play these video clips that are supposedly real actual footage, but they look horribly fake. Aside from the, I think two 'videos', much of what else that is presented is I'd say believable. They have recordings of them and multiple specialists go on to corroborate that this is indeed a new unknown ancient species. Like they state in this ^ documentary, there have been numerous examples in recent times of totally new, large animal species that have never been encountered or identified by science. To me, it is possible. I also think this is possible because some ancient humans have expressed this as well.

Colour me interested but insanely skeptical. The most 'evidence' for these supposed underwater creatures is purely archaeological, but that in itself doesn't exclusively point to mermaids.

Evolutionarily speaking, too, there seems little to suggest that aquatic apes should come about: While a 'complete' mermaid form might be evolutionarily beneficial, the transitional forms between normal apes and the mermaid would not be. Many other sea creatures would have been hardier, faster, more durable, etc while the supposed apes were transitioning into mermaids. In order to survive, they'd have to evolve in an environment of very few predators, which would nevertheless mean they'd be ill-suited to waters teeming with predators, such as the one from where the supposedly-spared shark came from.

[via press release from Animal Planet] Editor's Note: This two-hour special is science fiction based on some real events and scientific theory. ANIMAL PLANET'S "MERMAIDS: THE BODY FOUND" PAINTS A WILDLY CONVINCING PICTURE OF THE EXISTENCE OF MERMAIDS, WHAT THEY MAY LOOK LIKE AND WHY THEY'VE STAYED HIDDEN... UNTIL NOW

Bring me a corpse and I'll buy it. Until then, colour me sceptical.

Though I have to admit, I'd LOVE an aquatic ape. :p

As with everything, the government/military supposedly seized it all.

what would the Government gain from seizing this information. I highly doubt this is real. I remember once reading that sightings of mermaids in the old days were most likely manatees. plus it was most likely that many sailors in the open see were drunk. highly doubt it, but why not. if whales and dolphins exist, why not aquatic apes.

So, knowing that, they didn't snap a few shots with a cam; off the record. Yet, they have just enough evidence to produce a stunning computer animated sim? Something about this just smells fishy.

What were those sailors drinking and where can I get it?

Absinthe, and not in the US, it is illegal. Europe has places I think.
EDIT! I just checked the US' status and it is supposedly legal in some areas.

No matter, live in Europe. I'll find it. :p

Mermaid's conception.

Anyway, I am extremely skeptical. It's very possible, as we've barely scratched the surface of the sea, but I really don't believe in anything I don't have solid evidence of it existing.

Fairytales are cute, but some skepticism would be healthy. Has any reputable biologist ever reported on seeing a human-(insert favorite animal here) hybrid? Not that i know of, and i sure as heck would know, because it would be all over the news. Just looking at it genetically, it's impossible, as dolphins have one less pair of chromosomes then humans (22 vs. 23).

Supernatural in a mermaid thread, they should do an episode on that.
I have more of an issue believing in centaurs than mermaids, I could see mermaids being real if they were more fish in appearance than most believe.
