okay this is something that pisses me the flying freaking off
(pardon my jumble)

I myself am a musician, i speak for all musicians when im discussing this

i HATE people that are famous in the musical industry but DO NOT have the talent (EX: Miley Cyrus)
It enrages me to see her have fame and glory where as you listen to KSE or BFMV and they sound so much better and more relative as opposed to stupid populars that get PLATNIUM RECORDS because they sing mediocre and play one chord 8million times.....

Killswitch Engage, Bullet For My Valentine, IRON MAIDEN (legends btw) and others
ALL worked from NOTHING to be what and who they are now
AND still they dont get accredited with what they deserve
the bands we all know and love made music that have meanings that relate to us in some way, where famedrunks like miley only make songs about 'fun' or 'growing up'

the bands we all know and love made albums that have saved or changed our lives ( im definitly one, As Daylight Dies album by Killswitch Engage)

true, yet they WORKED for their fame,

as opposed to those that were named fame on the spot for nothing big

personally, music is played with emotion, i play riffs, licks, and solos that have sounds that seem to tell a story, all these bands dont play to sound cool they play sounds that tell stories, which makes each song in an album more meaningful, as opposed to repetition that has nothing to it

i bet everyone here has songs or albums from true musicians that have somehow changed their lives

EX: Waking The Demon - Bullet For My Valentine

Agreed, even though I haven't heard the music of the listed bands *is standing in the middle of the Sahara alone* most people are looking for image rather than music. Music is supposed to speak out to you in a way, yet this has been shifted to appearance.

Don't forget Paris Hilton. She's famous for absolutely NOTHING.
The only reason why she's famous is because she's stupid, and people are entertained by stupid. Her one song sucked, also.
Anyway, I'm not really a fan of metal. One band that I think is really original though, and I've never really heard anything like them is Vampire Weekend.

Vampire Weekend are afro-beat, there're a lot of bands that have a fairly similar sound. They just like never hit the mainstream, so it's not like a totally original genre.

But yeah, they're still goddamn amazing ;_;

What're you talking about, MO? Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails are some of the bigger bands in the world. And both hit the charts pretty damn early and pretty hard. RH with Creep and NiN with, uh, both Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral (and Closer, namely).

Dream Theater, on the other hand, is a prime example on hardwork going totally unnoticed.

I sympathize with you, truly I do. I'm a fan of Utada Hikaru (J-Pop). I understand when it comes to the meaning of the music. But the world isn't interested in stuff like that. Look at American mainstream. Mostly Rap. Rap. Nuff said. We all have our music that helps and pleases us.

This thread is drowning in stereotypes.

Rap is actually dying down as the head of the American mainstream music scene. It's being slowly but surely replaced with more leniant hip-hop/R&B and alternative. Although more rap songs may reach the top of the singles charts, rock and pop still dominate the actual billboards.

MO: Yeah, Reznor did technically start underground. I'm just saying it didn't take long for him to move up the musical hierchy.

true, rap is slowly dying down,
but aside from that, im just pointing out that its not right crediting 'musicians' like Miley Cyrus or Paris Hilton with major fame as opposed to not crediting true musicians like Killswitch Engage, Bullet For My Valentine, Machinehead, Forever In Terror, or Darkest Hour, or any of the other bands out there

this argument would make more sense if any of you are musicians as well
(im one, and im sure there are others)

Uh, I actually am. Aside from just knowing my shit when it comes to music, I play guitar, piano, and I'm working on learning violin.

true musicians

Okay, so, you do realize you're listing off some pretty big mainstream trash yourself, right? What about bits like The Apples in Stereo, The Olivia Tremor Control, Cut Copy, or The Hold Steady? All of some of the most accomplished bands I've ever heard in my life, and I doubt you've even heard of two of them.

No, I see your point. That in today's culture 'effort=/=fame'. But I think you're being ignorant yourself, since a lot of your bands follow a pretty formulaic pattern with minimal effort and still come out ahead of that bands that are really trying something new.

And piano is actually pretty easy. Guitar was and still is a bitch to me, and violin is like masochistically difficult, but I'm adjusting pretty fast to piano.

ahh, at least ya see my point XD and as well i see your point, in the sense i am kinda ignorant.

dont worry about guitar, it gets easier once you learn picking and fretting as well as basics, the hard part is playing by ear BUT that gets easier too, and i agree with you on violin,

it just irritates to see things like this

meh, they want more money, their fans are willing to pay for anything of theirs, its not like they claim to be super musicians/singers. to each their own.

Yeah, the society can work like that. I agree especailly with Paris Hilton. Hey, what about the people that wrote THEIR own songs, played THIER own instruments! Sometimes I look at people who wrote songs for them and wonder why can't they learn to write their own songs whereas when I hear somebody writing their own songs, I admire them like crazy! If your going to sing about yourself, don't have people write for you, WRITE or at least learn to WRITE for yourself. But yeah, TALENT is much more important then IMAGE. I mean seriously, some part of the world messed up with putting the image and not the fame but I'm sure there are bands like those you mentioned that are multi-talented and are famous.
