I am going to college full time and all this virus has done was made the rest of my semester a breeze. I get all take home exams now for Calc III, Physics 2 and Diff Eq, 24 hours to do them and turn them in. It's a free A for all my classes now. And I guess the governments about to give me a check as well.

I get that this virus is a threat to people with immune deficiencies, but that has always been the case even with the regular flu. Hate to say this but I think this is a conspiracy to make people more dependent on government. It just seems ridiculous to me that the world is reacting how it is when this virus seems to only kill marginally more people than the normal flu and it doesn't look like we can stop it either. We can't just shut everything down every time a bad virus is going around, people need to be productive for their living as well as their sanity. If this thing had like 10% fatality rate or higher it would be more understandable, but I don't think 2% is worth trying to stop the world.

For a new virus that has never spread from human to human before, the death rate is much higher than any flu.

The point of quarantining is to stop overloading hospitals ill-prepared to handle the influx of patients coming in. When we have flu seasons, hospitals are prepared and we have plenty of flu shots to give people so this kind of stuff doesn't happen.

No hospital anywhere was prepared for this. Looking at it like "oh well the flu kills people too" is not how we should be handling this virus.

If all 75b~ people on this planet got the virus and 2% died, that's well over 150m people who would die. No fatality rate should be that high.

After almost two weeks of this... I'm getting annoyed by my decontamination routine coming back into my house. I spend like 15 minutes washing my hands, spraying my clothes/shoes and wiping things I had to touch to enter. I'm normally really clean and a germaphobe, but I never went this far. It's strange how life just changed in the span of a few weeks.

I'm really concerned about the numbers still going up. Either there were cases that they missed or it's still spreading and isolation is failing (or some people are failing to isolate).

It's likely people failling to isolate. Spring break, lockdown parties etc are nothing but disasters waiting to happen since you can spread the disease before you even show symptoms. And on my way to and back from I still see people out on the street that have no business doing so, mostly kids (who don't care and don't realise what effect they could have) and the elderly (who should know better, but my experience with the elderly ever since I started working at the ambulance service is that a frightening amount seems to think they always know best)

At this point the death rate is actually higher than the flu, so we definitely should take it seriously. At the current confirmed number, (roughly) for every 5 people that recover from it 1 dies.
The death rate is not even close to 1/6

Yes, I understand all of this. But this isn't the worst virus that has ever or will ever spread and my fear is that humanity and our free nations will increasingly be manipulated into giving up freedom for the sake of convenience in combating diseases, or hunger, or murder, etc. People should be concerned and do what it takes to help protect themselves from getting sick but living in fear of getting sick from a virus is no way to live either. Imo basing our decisions and ethics on our fears and matters of convenience is placing the cart before the horse.

Honestly, once the lockdown and work from home ends by late April, I'll be fine. I don't mind avoiding the cold for a while, but when the weather gets better I want to be able to enjoy myself. I also think when it warms up, the virus won't spread as much. I was reading that countries that are entering their winter periods - like South Africa - have cases spiking as it gets colder. So who knows at this point. This virus just has so many questions and irregularities surrounding it.

I found myself wiping an amazon package with a clorox wipe and started to think about what I've become lol. I was like... am I about to wipe the cardboard amazon box, my scissors, the inside of the amazon box, the box my switch controller came in, then wipe down the table, wash my hands, and seal the garbage bag. Haha

It's funny. My State University has always been reluctant to implement online classes. With the Coronavirus, it finally happened.

but that has always been the case even with the regular flu.
Yes, but there are no treatments for the COVID-19, nor cure, not even a vaccine.

Even though we can make an argument that the flu's vaccine only has a 40-60% chance of working (which is better than nothing, TBH).

but I think this is a conspiracy to make people more dependent on government.
No, it's pretty much international governments being incompetent. This pandemic pretty much hit us under a worldwide leadership scenarios where not every world leader is capable.

I did hear that the governor in my state is trying to get all seniors in this state to graduate despite the loss of hours,
Thank God, 'cause in Florida everyone has to repeat their year.

I forgot to mention that I have 2 cavities, and they were suppose to be filled next month. I hope I can still get them filled. I've been making sure to keep my cavities clean, but I really hope to get them filled before my cavities get any worse.
Damn. Sorry about that :/ The only dentist appoint I have on hold is the biannual cleanup.

Uh, no. Of 549,298 cases, there have been 24,871, which is a 4.5% death toll. The World Health Organization estimates that the annual worldwide influenza epidemic is 3-5 million cases of severe illness, resulting in 250,000-500,000 deaths. Using the lowest and highest numbers, that would be a 8.3-10% death toll.

But the main worry of the Coronavirus isn't deaths; it's the rapid spread, the creation of critical care patients and how that could affect the healthcare system of nations. Already Italy, which had one of the best healthcare systems, pretty much crumbled. Spain fell as well.

THAT's the issue with the COVID-19: how it pretty much fucked

Not directed at you, but people need to chill about decontamination. Unless you have open wounds and or touch your eyes, nose and mouth, this won't enter your body. Yes, we are in a pandemic, but this means you need to be extra careful, not develop OCD or worsen your symptoms.The same precautions for any viral infection apply here.

That's what I keep thinking myself Ballard. My sister wants me to WIPE MY SHOES WITH A BLEACH WIPE when I go out for any reason. HUH? I know stuff gets on the bottom of shoes, but I don't want to ruin my black sneaks because of her paranoia. So I refuse to go that far.

As it is, I do have a small bottle of hand sanitizer for if I go near stores (Was lucky. A local drugstore is compounding the stuff), and I'm thinking of packing a few bleach wipes to wipe down any cart I use at the store. One of the brothers I live with is taking chemo for cancer, and my sister has 'mune problems, so I would rather be cautious but not crazy cautious.

You pretty much have very good reasons to be very specific in terms of being careful with disinfection.

I'd like to think this is a matter of governments being incompetent. What makes me second guess everything is the way the media sensationalizes and calls for socialist/communist solutions when we run into these kinds of problems. I'm not the kind of guy that lets conspiracies run my life or anything, it's just suspicious as hell when you've got Governor Cuomo in New York literally calling for the government to seize control over manufacturing to produce masks.

I try not to be too politically active either because I think it's largely a waste of time but it's a hard thing to avoid these days. Still everyone is acting as if the governments of the world are 100% responsible for fixing/dealing with this issue, but should that really be the case?

People need to understand that medias are a business. They attract consumers by being sensational. You could also make an argument that the consumers only want sensational stuff, so, they're gonna deliver what people want: sensation.

You certainly could make that point, which is to say that it's a cultural problem.

There's also this:

As a Digital Marketing professional, there's something we call "hyperconnectivity". What is that? Well, picture this:

* There's a family of four in the living room. Both teens are using their phones while the TV is on, one of the parents is also on the phone while the other parent is on the phone, with the laptop on his/her lap and the tablet beside him/her.

That is hyperconnectivity. Consuming various electronic mediums at the same time. This is a "problem" because everyone is consuming the same content at the same time. Even in different channels:

* TV has the news on and they're talking about the Coronavirus;
* One of the teens is using Twitter and the COVID-19 is trending;
* The other teen is on Instagram and the "Stay at Home" campaign is trending;
* One of the parents is on Facebook and he's seeing posts of people bored in their house due to quarantine;
* The other parent is on the laptop because s/he's writing an email because of teleworking; the tablet beside has a blogpost about tips for teleworking; and the smartphone is full of notifications from news app.

Now imagine this is happening in various households on the county, city and state levels. Nationwide.

The digital medium is an excellent tool, but it can also be a facilitator of negative things.

yeah, no offense to your trade but i absolutely hate the hyperconnectivity lol. My family is on a device all hours of the day, people are on smartphones wherever i go. I actually have to go out of my way to ignore whats trending on social media

I was referring to the ratio of deaths to actual completed cases,, which is only 160,000 out of the now 760,000 people that have gotten it. If 160,000 people have been able to go away from it, and 36,000 or so have died, that leaves 500,000 people that have it concurrently, not discharged, not guaranteed life or death.

What I was meaning was, currently, for every 4 people that have walked away from the disease so far, 1 has died. This is spreading a lot faster now, at an exponential level. Wuhan is being scrutinized for having way more urn deliveries than reported deaths, so China is probably lying about numbers too. And China has been giving other countries faulty testing kits too.

Even Trump, who has been a staunch hater of the media for a while and wanted this done by Easter, has now extended the lockdown until the end of April, and openly admitted more than 100,000 Americans might die of it, if everything goes well.

I do agree that the biggest problem is the health care situation, but at the same time, this is elevating way worse than it seemed before. We are living through history right now, whether people want to blame the media for it or not. The economy is factually is it's worst spot in years, and this is a pandemic on a much worse scale than Ebola.

Also, this hasn't erupted in Africa that much yet, and Lord knows how bad the death rate would be there, where Heath care is almost non-existent. Especially while we ourselves are already strapped for doctors and medical supplies.

What really scares me is that the flue season is tapering off but this seemingly spreading faster the closer to summer we get. Most viruses usually slow down with the heat...

My neighbors had a big "quarantine party" yesterday. Come for the coronas, leave with the corona virus... and spread it to wherever you go after...

I mean, anyone that thinks that the US has more coronavirus cases than China is lol'ing right now.
