Well, in theory, she is.

I like her, but she's kinda like a pyschic or something. She has powers, and is called a shit because of them.

Witch doesn't have to be a negative term.... It's probably just used for a girl with special powers... They could have called her a mage. But I guess witch just sounds better.

well typically in disney movies the term 'witch' is used to describe one with dark magic using them for evil. Namine has powers: true, Namine uses them for evil: FALSE!, i kknow everyone says 'u dont have to use them for evil to be a witch' false. if u dont use them for evil u are simply a magician or sorcessor/ess. Namine was forced to use them for evil so therfore not being a witch because she did it against her will. dont say im stupid or somehting cause im just stating my opinion. goodbye

The term "witch" is misunderstood. It's actually a very old religion that believes in the divine power of nature. It doesn't even necessarily have to do with magic. It has been said that when the Christian church became the dominant religion, it added the negativity to witchcraft, causing people to fear them. I don't know if that's true or not...

Yes, traditionally, the term "witch" is used to mean a practitioner of dark magic, but in reality it isn't that way at all...

Everybody here seems to be forgetting the important note I made earlier. Since you all were too blind to see it, let me post it again:

Why cant they just call her a girl, instead of a magician, or a sorceress, or a witch? The truth is, there is one thing that all magicians, sorceresses, and witches all have in common: They study spells, magic, and rituals. Namine does none of that. She's just some girl, who was born with a special gift.

If she were really a magician or a sorceress or whatever, then that would mean that she had learned one day how to alter peoples' memories, just like how magicians and stuff learn spells, and if that were true, then Marluxia wouldn't have needed Namine at all, he could've just learned the spell himself.

That's one of the main reasons I believe she's not a witch. There are more reasons, but that's one of my main ones.

Now come on, starry_eyed_hero, you of all people should know that Square enjoys using the more "unfamiliar" definitions of words. Were you not one of the people annoyed by other members taking the word "shadow" wrong before? For the hell of it, I looked up some words:

Witch
1: To affect injuriously with witchcraft.
2: A charming or alluring girl or woman.
3: One that is credited with usually malignant supernatural powers; especially: a woman practicing usually black witchcraft often with the aid of a devil or familiar.

Witchcraft
1: The use of sorcery or magic.
2: An irresistible influence or fascination.

Malignant
1: Tending to produce death or deterioration.

Remember that Naminé needed Castle Oblivion's help to do her little "trick" -- it wasn't her power(s) alone doing it. You can take that any way you want to take it, but the point is that there are multiple meanings for words. Not saying anyone is wrong, just don't instantly focus on one thing until all facts have been taken into account, eh?

Well, I guess there are many definitions of the word "witch". My main problem is that lately I've been seeing threads here that interpret the word the wrong way. Here's an example:

In the Kingdom Hearts 2 forum, as Zedro was attemping to prove that the RHG was Kairi, and not Namine, and he used this as some of his evidence

Zedro said:
Finally, the identity, now some of you have said "Well, it could be Namine, since she does appear in KH2", that's true, but why would a witch, like COM described her as, be going to school on Destiny Islands?
There have been a few more people thinking like that lately too, just because Jiminy's journal has been giving Namine a bad rep.

I just think that instead of Jiminy calling her a witch, and making her seem bad and cruel, he should've just referred to her as a young girl with magical powers.

Also, about Castle Oblivion. I really dont think Castle Oblivion was helping Namine's powers at all. The unknown said that Castle Oblivion makes people forget stuff, but I think he was probably lying, and that it was just Namine doing it the whole time.

you people are missing something. namine willingly helped the orginization. the witch-yes, i said witch-was lonley for reasons unknown. she thought that helping the orginization and making sora think they were friends would eliminate the lonliness. personally, i don't think of 'witch' in bad terms. jiminy called her a witch because that's what she is. even though i don't like namine, i don't mean this a bad way.

OK, I've read everything here and none this evidence seems to prove anything. Only like...one person actually looked up a concrete meaning of a 'witch'.

Besides, it's obvious that Square had touched up on the word 'witch' several times. After all, it is evident that they had wanted to use Witch instead of Sorceress in Final Fantasy VIII but in European culture, it isn't as well accepted into language we can merely throw around.

However, it's best if we analyze why they use 'witch' for Namine. A witch in Kingdom Hearts' terms generally stands for a female using some sort of magic or power over others in a less than honorable way by messing with Sora and Riku Replica's memories. I don't recall Namine ever submit willingly to the Organization. In fact, we aren't even quite sure how she ended up with them other than a fact that they must have had more power over her if they had wanted to control her. This could explain why it would not have been so convenient if she were to simply swipe Marluxia's memories and simply return Sora to his regular memories.

Also, the reference to Namine being Kairi's shadow is a bit shaky. In my opinion, Namine saying she was Kairi's shadow merely implies that she is not who Sora sees. Sora sees the shadow but he sees Kairi whenever he sees Namine. Make sense?

As for using Disney movies to try and relate probably won't work...but the message I believe they're trying to get across here with 'witch' is that Namine is powerful. She contains magical powers and is using them against her will...yet her power is still great.

May I introduce another new theory? I'm thinking, if she wasn't able to wipe out Marluxia's memories (and everyone else's), is there a possibility her power is void with the unknowns who are basically "nobidies" and contain "no hearts", therefore, no memories?

Just a guess.

Don't over-react. So they call Namine a witch. Words are just that, words. It's no big deal.

I'm not overreacting :)! I'm merely explaining. People are getting it wrong.

Geez. It's called a forum topic.

Ok she is a witch, ok? Oh and here's another good witch: Sabrina. Here's another: Kiki and all her family. A witch doesn't have to be anything bad. And when you say it was to be mean, you don't really know if Larxene is saying witch to be mean or if she's really saying witch. If you did, you'd be the script writer of the game. But you're not so...whatever.

hahaha..oh man..This is the funniest topic I have read so far.....They called Namine a witch...Big deal...if you call someone a witch..its an insult and a type of person..jees..They called her a witch cause they hate her...Dont over re-act....Not all witches are bad(like DTL's example)...You go angry over a non real video game character that you cant even communicate with who was called witch which is not even a bad word....

dudes, wait until KH2 comes out. Maybe more of this will make since with the playing of that game.

they probably had a purpose to calling her a witch! Evn though i don't know what that is, but still! And yeah, there are good witches and bad witches. It's how you use the word that determines it's meaning and how bad it is, like hell.
