The second would look much better if you removed the clipping mask.
First has a nice concept, but it looks a little busy. I think it could use some darkening around parts of the tag for depth.

I like the first one better than the second one, the first just looks too messy and grainy. The second one is too flat and monotone I think, and the clipping mask is a no go.

I kinda prefer the messy feel for it since it works for the character, but I'll go back and alter the graininess.
The second one...well I got stumped on that in the middle of it lol. The clipping mask I'll throw out and add some depth, but other than that I'm not sure what else to do.

If your tag feels empty I would add text or just leave the negative space alone.
Font experimentation would be healthy for you as well.

The second tag im just gonna toss to the side for now.
And yes recycling is NICE I never really got caught up in the fads that occurred in here anyway.

Anyways, Black Star has been fixed.

The second version is tons better. Even though i am not feeling the big border, i feel its neccessary to fill in some neg space, so it works out. Text seems a bit hard to read, try to fix that. Other then that, there is not much to say, but
