How come in kingdom hearts 2 when they all went into the realm of darkness to defeat Xemnas they were able to defeat the nobodies and heartless with ease but in kh3 they are op and broke Riku and King Mickey keyblades?468AB632-EE4E-4B90-B855-11236F11BF8F.png

From what I understand the TWTNW is in the Realm in Between not the Realm of Darkness That's why you can access it from the world map in KH2

The World That Never Was is not located in the Realm of Darkness. It's located in the Realm of In-between, the same place you'd find Twilight Town, Traverse Town, and the Mysterious Tower. Admittedly, it is CLOSE to the RoD as stated by Pete, but it's not quite there. And if you're referring to the location of the final battle against Xemnas where he turns into a dragon and has his zebra coat, that was actually a pocket dimension called The World of Nothing that Xemnas created himself using the power of Kingdom Hearts.
The only times previous to KH3 that we've ever actually BEEN in the Realm of Darkness is with Aqua in the Secret Episode of BBS. And you'll notice, if you've played that Episode, yes, the Heartless are considerably stronger than even some of the most powerful Unversed enemies from that game. So they've definitely been consistent about it.

To address your question, suspension of disbelief to continue a narrative. They wanted to introduce new designs for Mickey and Riku and decided to go down an unfortunate route.

You're supposed to believe that Heartless having the homefield advantage are stronger than Zebra Xemnas.

Actually, that's not much of a stretch. Remember, even Aqua, a Keyblade Master with years of experience, had trouble with the Heartless on their home turf, too. And none of the other characters besides Mickey have ever ventured into the Realm of Darkness before. Is it really such a reach to believe that the Heartless fighting on their own territory would be that much stronger? Also, it's not like they were stronger than Xemnas, let's be real. Riku and Mickey weren't having THAT hard a time.

She had trouble with HIGH TIER heartless on their home turf. Namely, Darksides and Dark Hide. She didn't get roflstomped by...wait for it...a horde of shadows. LOL

When you play as Aqua in the Secret Episode of BBS (which is the first time she encounters Heartless at all, let alone on their home turf), they are noticeably harder than all the normal enemies she's faced up to that point. Even grunt Heartless like Shadows have the potential to kill you if you aren't careful, even though you're at like level 50 by that point. By the time Aqua is breezing through the more ordinary Heartless in 0.2, she's already been there for 10 years and gotten used to their power by then.

She failed to kill even one Demon Tower or Tide alone on screen.

She fought against a Demon Tower but all she managed to do was hold it back until it decided to retreat, which doesn't mean it couldn't win just that it had determined its survivability was not a guarantee. She was attacked by a second Demon Tower (maybe the same one) and she had Mickey's help with this one. Yet they still didn't defeat it, it was much stronger than the previous one and Mickey said that wasn't safe to pursue it which Aqua agreed with so they let it go.

Then a Demon Tide attacked them a fair bit later and it takes on both Mickey and Aqua, two of the most powerful keyblade masters we know, working together they manage to MAYBE defeat it? It's not there so we can probably assume it was dead but that means it took two of them working together to best one. Another (or maybe the same one who knows) attacks Riku and Aqua manages to only barely contain it to protect him. She visibly struggles to keep it chained and eventually it breaks free sending Mickey for a loop and dragging he back into the island remnants. There it does battle with her again and we don't see the outcome of this fight we just skip to her laying on the beach being tired and the creature being gone, did she best it? did it simply retreat? We don't know but no matter what the interpretation you go with it's made clear this enemy was a struggle.

People who go "lol shadows" literally miss the entire point of this heartless species. Do you look at a waterfall or typhoon and go "lol drops of water and wind"? No you acknowledge without question the clear representation of strength that is brought by collecting these countless tiny elements into a singular force. One shadow even 20 shadows as individual enemies isn't too much for the average wielder but these things are hundreds to thousands attacking as a singular collective. It's like trying to cut through a geyser or the ocean, the comparison between water and darkness is a constant thing in this series for a reason. Heck even KH3 when Riku swallowed by a tower it shows him essentially drowning struggling as if he's deep under water with no air.

Demon Towers are just living masses of shadows, chop down their body and they can just merge with more shadows to regenerate, and in the realm of darkness there is no shortage of those. When enough mass together they fuse into this creepy living orb of darkness and this sentient core of shadows becomes able to rapidly produce shadows to defend and attack. Now it doesn't matter how many shadows you kill, the core will produce endless amounts to replace them so you have to beat the core. As we saw if you're strong enough you can temporarily exhaust the core's ability to produce leaving it slow and vulnerable, you can also lock the core temporarily to prevent it from producing more. Which is why the Demon Tornado we saw later was so dangerous. Because it had amassed so much darkness, so much power that its regeneration abilities exceeded our heroes abilities to destroy the shadows. Making it impossible to get to the core and resulting in their obliteration.

For the record we've seen this several times even before this. A single shadow, Data on Sora's heartless, fed on bugs and the darkness released from the digital heartless to transform into a dark side with all kinds of crazy abilities and then further evolved into a digital replica of sora itself with even more crazy abilities. There was a heartless smaller than Lock, Shock, and Barrel that absorbed other heartless to become a gargantuan monster with tentacles spanning through the entirety of Halloween Town. We saw Aqua mowing down Darksides left and right only for 13 of them to gather their strength and become wickedly more powerful.

Individual heartless may be weak alone but when they feed and absorb one another or the darkness of others they become stronger, much MUCH stronger. Darksides may be big but they lack the regenerative abilities, the erratic movement, the ability to overwhelm in sheer numbers, and that makes them far less a threat.

Well, I'm not sure I'd call a Demon Tower/Tide insignificant. From my personal experience, Demon Towers like the one Mickey and Riku fought in 3 are more troublesome than your average Darkside. Honestly, I've always thought Darksides were easier to beat even than many NORMAL Heartless. So, it's not all THAT big of a discrepancy. But I do get what you're saying. Nevertheless, I think you can still roll with it by just saying that Darksides are weak af. Hell, Sora even beat one of them before he even had a Keyblade (in the opening of KH1). They're really not a threat.
