Chapter Fifteen
~Band Practice Pt. Three~
Since I really had nowhere to go, I kicked back on the couch and turned on the television. Never really had anytime to watch anything nowadays, but it wasn't like there was anything worth watching. The first thing that appeared once I turned it on was that Kun Kun show. It was really popular nowadays, especially for a puppet show. I raised the volume a bit so I could hear more of what was going on. This puppet show was laughable. Not because it was funny, but because you could see the puppet strings holding them up. "Kun-Kun!" the female dog puppet yelled. "I only did it because... Because I loved you!"
"But you also stole the priceless Matchbook Diamond! And fifty thousand gil!" Kun Kun said while blowing into a pipe from which bubbles spouted. "And you almost killed my deputy! What do you say to that Ms. Kensington!?"
"But the diamond was only for our wedding rings! And the money was for our honeymoon. We could be filthy rich!"
"I'd rather die poor than to marry a criminal!" he said pointing his finger accusingly. From behind, he pulled a pair of handcuffs and put Ms. Kensington's hands and cuffed them. This was actually some pretty good stuff. I didn't dislike it at all, but I don't think it's worth getting all worked up over. Kun Kun did look pretty cool with the pipe and the bubbles.
"This is an old episode," Shinobu said. I freaked out when she said it. I didn't even notice her sitting down next to me. She dyed her hair black. It looked weird. I never really could imagine her hair black, but, y'know, whatever.
"Nice hair?" I said. She gave me a smile as a thank you and she pulled my hand. I unwillingly followed and I passed Amy's room. The door was open and I could see Dad sitting on her bed playing the keyboard.
"Can't you play that outside, Dad?"
"But you have to teach me this part for the formal!" he whined. I didn't see that coming. I thought that he was like... Good at playing, but, this was kinda pathetic. Whatever. This was really nothing compared to many of his other faults. I asked Shinobu where are we going and she told me to follow her into her room. I've never been in her room before. Nor Sanae's. I've only been in Amy's room once, and only to wake her up last Saturday. I entered and her room was similar to Amys room. It was creepy. The furniture was different, yeah, but the colors were all... It could be something you'd expect to see when you're dizzy. All pastel colors, but mostly white to border the walls and ceiling. I sat at her desk while she jumped on her bed and began jumping up and down. She was taller than I was, so I was extremely prepared to laugh if she hit her head on the ceiling. She stopped with a loud thud on her bed. I looked back to see if she was alright.
"What am I supposed to be looking at?"
"The computer. I'm talking with Penelope. I asked her about you. Scroll up on that window to read what she said," she said pointing at the screen. I did. I read upon what happened on the latest episode of Kun Kun, what's happening at school, and there it was. Shinobu asked what she thought of me. I was afraid to click once more. Rejection, hatred, resentment, all possible answers. I did click. All she said was, "He's nice." That was it. Shinobu asked if that was it, and all Penelope answered was, "Yep." I wasn't really dissapointed. I haven't gotten to know her yet, nor has she gotten to know me... But I really had to make myself stand out at the formal so she could notice me.
Penelope was asking for an answer from Shinobu about something for the prom and I was about to type when Dad called me up to the roof. I didn't have my guitar with me, but Dad let me use his. He said he tuned it correctly, but... I had my doubts after looking at the neck with bits of tape holding it together. I put the strap on and climbed out the window and up the stairs to see Silver, sitting on his amp and feeding Hoomhaha, and Piku already hitting the drums. Dad set up the keyboard while Amy was fixing the settings for the right sounds to come out.
Band practice was normally fun, but very tiring. Dad wanted to try some harder songs, which meant heavy drums, fast guitars, and lots of screaming. Dad took the screaming parts and I took the vocals. Silver was playing so fast that he almost dropped Hoomhaha on the ground, but luckily it fell into his shirt pocket. The songs were fun and we did a lot of covers that we were sure to please the crowd at the formal. We only had a forty five minute set so we had to pick our songs carefully. Piku disagreed with a lot of our song choices, seeing as to how she had a different taste than Dad, Silver, and I, but with a bribe of many bags of Pickle chips, she sorta kinda agreed.
Practice was fun, but we had to quit early because it got dark. Dad said playing with the streetlights being the only source of light we had was going to be cool, but not when it was windy. The sea breeze wasn't a breeze at all. It knocked Piku's high hat over. She expressed her anger in a loud curse at the weather. Dad ordered pizza for dinner since Kat, Silver, Piku, and I were joining them. Besides. Dad wasn't allowed to touch the stove. We watched Kun Kun while we ate and in the middle of the re-run, Rikku came home and kissed Gerard on the cheek as he held her gently in his arms. It was nice to see them together sometimes. I've always felt sorry for Rikku, but maybe... I was the one to pity.
I sat on the couch with everyone else and turned my head to see Rikku and Gerard slumping over the kitchen table examining a sphere that she had found. They discussed what the context was, where it was happening, many other things. Watching them together felt nice. It was like nothing was wrong. By just looking at them smile and laugh you couldn't help but doubt Dad's debauchery.
I stayed awhile after Dinner finished and Dad escorted all of us back to where we belonged. Silver stayed in an apartment a few floors below Dad did. Kat and Piku went back to the garage and Dad took me to the entrance of my place. He said that Rikku was waiting for him at home so he gave me a wave goodbye. He was cool sometimes. I guess. I went up and caught Asuka smoking again. I warned her that it wasn't good for her health, but she assured me that she only smoked one every night. Still... She didn't seem like she deserved to die early. I guess. Well, maybe she did. But maybe not.
Mom was sitting down on the couch in her pajamas reading a magazine. I guess the new issue of L came in. L was a fashion magazine. Mom wasn't one to be considered a fashionista, but after the Leblanc Syndicate disbanded, Leblanc spent her time designing clothes instead of schemes to get rich quick. Mom and Leblanc kept in touch normally. I even met her once. She had the most unpleasant laugh. I couldn't stand it. But she was pretty normal. I just wish she wouldn't dress so... Cold. Same could be said to Mom and Rikku. I kissed her goodnight and went straight to my room. I didn't bother to turn on the lights because I knew I was just going to fall asleep. I opened the window to let the breeze in. I hated laying down in bed when it was hot at night. It made everything uncomfortable. Although, I wake up fine in the morning. I guess it wasn't so bad.
