Aerith's Promise

"So," Cloud broke the silence first,"Why Aerith's church?"

"Its....safe there." Ren replied, shrugging. The wind drowned out half the sound, though.

"Ah," He finally ended. Ren stayed silent.

"Safe as in safe for a spy?" He asked. Ren smiled. That was the lie.

"Yup," Ren replied. Cloud believed Ren was a spy for Jette, behind enemy lines in Kubai, and didn't trust her one bit. Probably why he ignored all calls for help from her.

Life was wasted on you, A voice said in her head.

"Huh?"

Geo....stygma.... The sound of nails along a chalkboared screeched in her mind.

"Aw.....my....head!" She said, letting go of Cloud, clutching her head.

"Ren? Are you alright?" Cloud asked urgently, speeding through trees.

"I'm....fine" She forced out, feeling something ooze from her head. She looked at her hand, now covered in black blood.

"You sure you're alright back there?" Cloud asked again.

"Yeah...I have........" Ren struggled to say, still holding on to him. She couldn't finish the sentence. "It....usually goes...away...."

"Alright, but we're nearing the church," Cloud replied, slowing down to not hit the piles of rubble left behind from the raid seven years ago. He pulled over by the entrance, and quicly got of. Ren followed, then stopped.

"Ugh....kutsuu...." Ren mumbled. She closed her eyes, waiting for it to pass, but she felt her conciousness slipping.

"Ren? Ren, can you hear me!?" Cloud shook her. Ren didn't respond.

-----

"Your parents were worth nothing," A man with long silver hair said, crouching down in front of the little girl with strawberry blonde hair, clutching her head, "Which is why your father injected the geostygma into you."

"He....didn't....do that!" The little girl screamed, holding her head tight. The man laughed.

"You're like me, Aishii," The man said, wiping the black blood off her forehead, "We have geostygma."

"No I dont!" She shouted, punching him in the nose. She ran.

------

"Ren?"

Ren's eyes fluttered open. Cloud stood over her.

"Oh good, your up," He said, helping her up. She shook her head.

"Yeah, thanks," Ren mumbled, checking her forehead. The blood was gone.

"You alright?" Cloud asked cautiously. Ren nodded, titling her head back to let the cool wind hit her face.

Ren walked into the church, Cloud following behind her. She felt the crumbling walls, and the flower beds scattered around the floor. A small breeze entered the building. Ren breathed in quietly, and walked to the largest flower bed at the front of the church, a sword stuck on concrete, glinting in the sunlight from the hole in the roof.

"She hasn't been here in a while...." Ren said aloud, steadying herself on a bench. Cloud looked at her in alarm.

"She?" He asked. Ren looked at him.

"Yeah. Aerith," She replied, walking to the sword, "and Zack, too."

Cloud stared at her. What was she talking about?

"When I was little, Dalia and Ky took me in after the raid," Ren reminised, "Ky found me here, by his motorcycle, with his phone." She laughed in that part. "I had blacked out, but right before I did, I saw two people beside Ky. The lady....she said she was Aerith, and that I'd be fine. She was next to a guy, and I didn't get his name...."

"I went back a few days later, and they were there, waiting for me. Zack saw me first, and hugged me, like if I knew him before. He introduced himself as Zack. Aerith sat in the flower bed, and I sat in front of her. Zack stayed standing behind me, against a wall. Aerith hummed to herself, and I asked her, 'Aerith, do I have geostygma?' She looked up at me and moved the hair from my forehead, stroking the black bruise I had there. She frowned."

"She said exactly, 'You do, but you'll be cured. I promise you that.'" Ren stopped, and found herself sitting on the flower bed. Another breeze hit her. Cloud put his hand on her shoulder.

"So do you have geostygma?" He asked. Ren shrugged.

"I'm not sure...but I think I do." Ren replied, looking up at him. Cloud nodded.

"Well, now, onto business," She said, shaking her head and standing up.

"Ok, what's so important that you insist on bugging me every chance you get?" Cloud asked, sitting on a bench. Ren smiled sweetly.

"Well, the Jette army needs new recruits, and you being a hero and all-"

"No," He said firmly, standing up. Ren's eyes softened.

"Cloud, the Jette army is losing people, and Kubai is getting closer to winning in every battle," Ren explained, "Kubai plans to attack us at our strongest points, and we need help. Cloud, we need you."

Cloud stayed silent. Ren grabbed his shoulder.

"Please." She continued, more emotion in her voice.

"Cloud?" A sweet voice said from behind. Cloud and Ren turned.

"Aerith?"

A girl in a long dark pink dress and brown hair tied back with a pink ribbon stood in the light, staring. She smiled a bit, and nodded.

Cloud stood there, speechless, mouth wide open. Ren mimicked his face, in the same shock.

"Geez, Cloud, don't look so suprised," A male voice chuckled. Beside Aerith appeared a guy with dark brown hair and an old SOLDIER uniform. He had Ren's iridescent blue eyes, and a cocky smile.

"Zack?" Ren asked, breathlessly. Zack nodded, crossing his arms.

"How....when..." Cloud was dumbfounded. Ren snapped out of it and ran to them.

"Oof!" She embraced the two figures in a hug, noticing how short she still was from the last time she saw them.

"Hey....you got some muscle like I told you!" Zack complimented. Ren let go, blushing. She made a warning look at him. Zack nodded in understandment.

"It's been a while, hasn't it?" Aerith said, looking at Cloud. Cloud nodded absentmindedly.

"Yeah, it has," Cloud finally said. Aerith smiled.

"I see you haven't convinced him," Zack said, talking to Ren. Ren shrugged.

"Cloud, Ren- I mean, the Jette Army needs you," She said, correcting her mistake, "Do it for her. You know how much it means to her."

That's where Ren frowned. No one knew how much this meant to her. If Kubai were to win...she'd be the first killed. Kubai wanted nothing to do with the people infected with Geostygma and Jenova cells. They'd want them gone. For good.

Not to mention the....nevermind.

Cloud stayed silent, looking away. Ren's face fell. He'd never agree to help her, let alone the entire Jette army-

"Fine. I guess....I guess I'll help..." Cloud said, rubbing his chin. Ren looked at him.

"R-really?" Ren whispered. Cloud nodded.

"Thank you!" She said, embracing him. Cloud cleared his throat, staying still. Ren pulled away.

"Er, sorry, got carried away there," She said, scratching her head. Zack laughed. Aerith smiled.

"Well if that's all, I need to go. Tifa'll be waiting," He trailed off. Ren nodded.

"Go ahead, I'll catch up," Ren said. Cloud took one last look at Aerith and Zack, and did what no one had ever seen him do.

He....smiled.

War Talk

"Ren, it's nice to see you," Aerith said, smiling. Ren looked up at her, smiling as well.

"I joined the army, like I said I would, Zack," Ren announced halfheartedly. Zack nodded in approval.

"Well, if I taught you well, you'd be ranked." He said comically, ruffling her hair. She laughed.

"I am. Squadron I, Commander in Chief," She said, showing him her silver glove. It had her tag, showing her name, rank, and squadron number.

"Nice goin', little sis!" He said, high fiving her. Ren high fived back, rather embarrased.

"Zack, I'm not related to you, and I'm not little anymore. I'm seventeen," Ren explained as-a-matter-of-factly. Zack snorted.

"Your still younger than me," He said. Aerith laughed her light giggle.

"Can we stop the war talk? I wanna know, have Ky and Dalia...?" Aerith waited.

"Yes, they know I enlisted. They know everything." Ren replied. Aerith smiled.

"I remember when Ky found you...." She trailed off, looking at her forehead. Ren caught on as she reached to touch the darker bruise forming on it.

"Um, its nothing," She said, stepping back and letting her sideswept bangs fall over the bruise. Aerith frowned dissaprovingly.

"Ren-" Aerith started. Ren's phone started beeping. Ren sighed in exasperation and took it out.

"Hai? Laz?" She quickly changed her voice deeper, "Ugh, tadaima rusu ni shite imasu. I'm kinda busy right now. Mhm. Okay. I'll go to Reno and Rude's later to see what's up. Matte. Ittekimasu." Ren flipped her phone shut.

"Aerith, I gotta go, Cloud has my ride and Laz-"

"I know. Go," She said, smiling. She literally oozed light. Ren looked at Zack.

"Go kick ass, Ren," Zack said, "But you better visit more often."

Ren nodded. She looked at them, eyes glittering. They started to disintegrate.

"You'll be cured," Aerith's voice rang in Ren's ear, "I promise you that."

"One can only ask for so much, Aerith," Ren said, laughing at the small hope she had, walking down the aisle of rusted and dusty benches. Cloud waited, standing against her motorcycle. He looked...occupied.

"I can't believe....that was them," He said aloud, clearly in shock. Ren put her hand on his shoulder.

"It was them," Ren said. Cloud looked at her, and for the first time in a long time, believed. He nodded.

"Well then, if you don't mind, I'd like to drive my motorcycle," Ren said, pointing at her black ride. Cloud nodded. She straddled the motorcycle, Cloud behind her.

"Where to, man?" She asked, revving the engine.

"Edge," Cloud said. Ren nodded, and zoomed away, leaving Aerith's church behind.

-----

"Tifa, where's cloud?" Marlene asked. Denzel looked up from his sketch. Tifa looked up from her newspaper.

"He's at Jette visiting Ren," Tifa said, putting the newspaper down. Marlene's eyes brightened.

"Oh Ren!? Is she coming, Tifa? Is she?" Marlene jumped excitedly. Denzel looked at Tifa expectantly.

"I'm not sure," She said, looking out the window, "I'm not even sure when Cloud'll get back."

-----

"How are Marlene and Denzel?" Ren asked. Cloud shrugged.

"They're alright," he said, "wanting to see you, as always."

Ren laughed. Marlene and Denzel had only met her once, and they loved her from the start. Marlene said she wanted to be just like her and Tifa when she grew up, and Denzel was interested in war talk, which Ren supplied.

"Mind if I say hi?" She asked.

"Hmph," Cloud nearly chuckled, "No problem with me."

"Alright then," She said, revving the engine again.

Denzel Sees

"Oh....when is Cloud gonna get here!" Marlene was getting impatient by the minute. Tifa laughed.

"He'll be here soon," Tifa assured, putting her hand on Marlene's small shoulder. Marlene sighed.

"Hey, I hear a motorcycle," Denzel quietly said, walking toward the window. Marlene skipped over beside him, looking out. Marlene smiled.

"It's Cloud! He's here!" She said, jumping up and down. Denzel studied the moving motorcycle closer, and noticed the strawberry blonde hair blowing in the grey atmosphere. Denzel smiled.

"Hey...it's Ren!" He pointed downward at the parking motorcycle, and sure enough, Ren hopped off the motorcycle. Tifa snorted.

"Hmph. I guess it is...." She shook her head slowly.

"Let's go down! Please Tifa?" Marlene made her big puppy eyed look. Tifa sighed.

"Fine, lets go. C'mon, Denzel," Tifa replied, gesturing Denzel to follow. Denzel stayed frozen.

"Denzel?" Tifa went to stand by him, shaking him a bit. "Denzel....?"

Denzel studied the image before him. Ren was still Ren...but she looked...changed. She had more muscle, and had a lot of cuts and bruises. But that wasn't what stood out to him.

The motorcycle she was riding, it wasn't Cloud's, yet it looked familiar. He had seen a lot of Jette Army soldiers with the exact motorcycle.

Then there was something sticking out of the side. It looked like a pistol....the end of one, actually, and badly hidden was a helmet. A black Jette Army helmet.

"Ren...?" Denzel tried to access all this when he heard Tifa.

"Hello? Denzel? Cloud is waiting." Denzel snapped out of it and nodded, following Tifa downstairs.

----

"Ren! Cloud!" Marlene rammed into Cloud, embracing him into a hug. Cloud cleared his throat.

"Hey there," He said, but by then, Marlene had moved on.

"Ren!" She wrapped her arms around Ren's legs, almost knocking her off balance.

"Hey there, squirt!" Ren grinned, ruffling her hair. Marlene smiled up at her, letting her go. Ren squatted down to her. "How's life?"

Marlene laughed. She had a light and cheery laugh, much like Aerith. "Same as usual, Ren. Waiting for the war to end." Ren nodded and stood just as Tifa and Denzel entered. Denzel smiled.

"Hey there, Denzel," Ren said, nodding. Denzel nodded back, smile fading as he looked closer at her glove.

J-jette....army? The letters on her glove clearly read Jette Army.

Ren noticed Denzel looking at her metal military glove, and pulled it behind her back nervously. Denzel shook his head.

"How goes the war?" Denzel asked, trying to shake off the wierd gear Ren was sporting. Ren shrugged.

"Same, still between squadron one and what's left of the Kubai army," She answered, trying to make it sound boring, "Like I said, same old same old."

Denzel could see she wanted to avoid war talk. Ren blushed.

"Well Ren, thank's for stoppin' bye," Tifa said, breaking the silence, "But Cloud and I have business to attend to." She looked at Cloud, hands on hips. Cloud blushed nervously, scratching his head. Ren laughed half heartedly.

"Ha ha, well...I have to go anyway," She said, checking the phone in her pocket. No calls from Reno or Rude.

"Yeah, thanks for the ride," Cloud added, nodding. Ren shrugged.

"No problem," She replied, walking to her motorcycle. She stradled the black vehicle, and took one last look at Denzel. He stared at her intently. She winked and saluted, starting the engine.

"Come back soon!" Marlene shouted. Tifa smiled. Cloud stayed silent. Denzel stared intently, an idea strinking in his head.

What....what if Ren was a...soldier?

Kam and Mar

"Hai?" Ren asked into her black phone, zooming her way back to Jette, into Shyla.

"Ren, its Reno."

"Oy, Reno! Nanika atta?" Ren smiled, keeping one hand on the steering handle.

"Ah, not much, but Laz called."

"Oh, what did he want?" She asked.

"Something about Cloud-"

"Oh, hai! I need to talk to you guys about that. Can I...?"

"Headquarters are open anytime, my friend," Reno replied nonchalantly. Ren smiled.

"Thanks Reno. Tell Rude I'll be there in a bit," Ren said.

"Will do. Dewa mata." Reno replied.

"Dewa mata!" Ren retaliated, shutting her phone. She sped faster as she entered Shyla.

----

"I'm looking for Reno," Ren prompted the woman at the front desk, "Or Rude. Either one's good."

The woman, around her forties with purple rimmed glasses and green eyes, looked up at her expectantly. Ren looked at her with greater authority.

"Hm, do you have an appointment?" She asked lazily, crossing her arms. Ren rolled her eyes.

"Lady, they know I'm here, so just-"

"Hey Ren! My man!" Ren turned, her face pale, to see Reno laughing. Ren sighed in relief, thinking it was Laz.

"Hi," She said, shooting a dark look at the lady behind the counter. She blushed deep scarlet and turned back to her work.

"Follow me, amiga, the others have gathered," Reno overdid. Ren laughed as he put his arm out, taking it.

"By others, it's just Rude, huh?" She asked jokingly. Reno grinned.

"Actually, no, we have two newbies," He said, opening the door for Ren.

The door led to a bland meeting room, three members sitting in black business chairs. One was Rude, his sunglasses on, as usual. The other was a female with tan blonde hair, pulled back into a ponytail, bangs almost covering her eyes. She wore the neat uniform Rude and Reno usually wear. The other was a man, a teenager at most, with unruly black hair and bright green eyes. He wore his uniform like Reno, almost like a Reno look-alike.

"Ren, this is Kam," Reno gestured to the blonde, and she nodded, "And Mar." The guy with unruly black hair waved. Rude stood.

"Reno said you've got something about Cloud...?" Rude asked, crossing his arms. Ren nodded.

"Cloud has agreed to assist the Jette army," Ren replied formally. Reno laughed.

"Oh, that's great!" He said half sarcastically. Ren looked over at him.

"What else did he say?" Rude asked. Ren sighed.

"I didn't get to ask anything else....sorry." Ren smiled sheepishly. Kam looked away.

"I can go by tomorrow after...." She stopped and looked over at Kam and Mar, then to Reno and Rude.

"Um....after....I get out of....work," Ren chose her words carefully, eyeing Kam and Mar. Mar stared at her intently, trying to figure her out. Ren could see Kam trying not to look.

Ren looked at Reno then, and he nodded.

"Well, I have to get to....work," Ren said slowly, winking. Reno and Rude nodded, and Kam and Mar ignored. Ren walked out of the room, and took out her cell phone.

-----

"Hai?" A drowsy voice asked.

"Laz? It's Ren," Ren quickly replied, lowering her voice. The streets of Shyla were black and eerie, ominous creatures and dark figures roaming the alleys. Ren stradled her motorcycle, starting the engine.

"Ren? Where are you?! Your supposed to be on duty!" Laz half shouted. He sounded like if he had been asleep.

"Ugh, I'm sorry, I was busy with Cloud-"

"Cloud? What did he say?" Laz interrupted. Ren started slowly through the streets, weaving through the diminishing crowds as the night reached upon them.

"Why don't I just tell you at base?" Ren asked exsaperatingly. Laz sighed.

"Fine." Laz grumbled. Ren grinned.

"I'll try not to be late...." Ren sing songed, almost losing her low voice. Laz laughed.

"Yeah, I'd like to see that happen," Laz replied, scoffing. Ren smiled wider.

"I'll be there in a few, iya?" Ren prompted.

"Iya," Laz answered, sighing again.

"Ittekimasu," Ren said.

"Un, Ittekimasu," Laz hung up. Ren sighed and closed her phone. She made her way out of Shyla, pulling over to the side of the forest. She hopped off, grabbing her metal glove.

"Alright, let's do this fast," Ren sighed, flipping a metal latch open. Buttons flashed dimly, with a speaker for when phones weren't available. Ren pouted as she looked through the assortment.

"Ah, here you go." Ren pressed a blue button.

A blinding white light flashed, immersing Ren in it.

Suprises

The light diminished, a new person standing in Ren's spot.

Grey metal covered every inch of it's body, minor parts made of red cloth. On her arm was a badge with three red stripes on it, and a dark grey helmet covering it's head. It reached and yanked the metalic helmet off, breathing.

"Ugh!" Ren breathed, shaking her light and wavy hair out of the helmet. "Why must you automatically get on my head?" She asked the helmet, throwing it to the back of her black vehicle. She took out her phone to check the time. Only two minutes had passed. New record.

"Nice," She said, about to stradle her ride, when a faint roar of an engine rang in her ears. She quickly put the helmet back on, and got on the motorcycle, revving the engine. She turned for Cayros's Territory, but stopped when she spotted two headlights. The headlights turned to motorcycles, driven by two men(?) In black outfits and helmets.

"What the-" The two lights zoomed past her, a muffled laugh drowned out by the wind.

"Hey, that was him!" The one on the left shrieked. The one on the right scoffed.

"And how would you know that?" The second one said, his voice icy yet light, like a woman's mixed with a man's.

"The blade, the blade!" The left one said. The one on the right sighed, and turned back.

Ren watched in awe as they turned back. They seemed to get closer....and closer....to her!

"Oh sh-" She revved the engine one more time, speeding off.

"After him!" She heard one of the drivers say. Ren groaned.

Suddenly, a knife like thing blew right past her, barely missing her head. More knive like weapons flew past her, then Ren looked back and saw the driver on the left standing on his motorcycle, throwing knives wildly. He laughed wickiedly.

"Don't overdo it with the knives!" The one on the right shouted. Ren sped up.

"Ugh, let me handle this," The one on the right summoned a small version of a cannon, and it glowed blue. A glowing blue burst of power fired out of it, ghost like gas swirling around it.

"Woah!" Ren ducked, the power missing her narrowly.

"Great, an ambush of two people," Ren grumbled, reaching for her gunblade. She looked back for a second, trying to get the aim right, and fired. The bullet split in two, and head in the direction of the two.

"Two bullets? Wow, is that all he's -" Boom! The two bullets exploded right in the two driver's faces, making them slide to a stop. Ren sped up, putting her gunblade down. That should fend them off long enough for me to get to Cayros's Territory, She thought.

As the fire and smoke cleared, the two men in black clicked the plastic covering their eyes open, watching Ren dissapear into the night. They had ice-almost white-blue eyes with black irises. The one on the right growled.

"She got away!" He shouted angrily. The one on the left flinched.

"Geez, I'm sorry, alright!" The one on the left retaliated. The one on the right crossed his arms angrily.

He growled, taking of his helmet, shaking the blonde hair inside it out. He was really a she, like Ren, with light skin and hair in a ponytail.

"It's not over, Ren." She whispered angrily, wiping the sweat off her forehead, "One can only hide from us for so long."
