Unbreakable

2-1.jpg

In a world where the most of mythical creatures still roam, there is a company named Tulsa Corporation that serves as the key to giving the people their everyday supplies. This can range from their personal needs to their social needs. It is still a time where men use swords to fight combat, but also use the new technolgy of guns. However, the dawning of a revolution is near.

The Spirigam is the very afterlife that maintains the planet. When a team from Tulsa Corporation finds some Spirigam energy flowing in a river one day, they take it back to the labs and run some tests. It is clear that this could bring fame and fortune to the company. However, when experimenting begins on humans, things go wrong. Spirigam energy also has its bad uses when used for greed. The human experiments that are infused with this energy are turned into monsters.

These monsters are now a threat to the entire world. By just the simplest slash, a human can be infected and turned into a monster. In other cases, the monsters can viciously slaughter a human being. To solve the problem quickly, Tulsa Corporation has enforced conscription on those men who haven't been infected and can fight. This includes a small town named Kalona, where many are about to lose their loved ones.

Dawn Turner is the owner of the Turner Mansion her family left her and is the lucky girl to have inherited her family's fortune. When she loses her best friend Dusk to the Tulsa army, her life is never the same again. Even with her other friend Serenity by her side who also lost her boyfriend Hiro to the army, Dawn feels as lonely as ever.

But two years later, an official announcement reaches Dawn's ears. Lilac Tulsa, the CEO and chairwoman of Tulsa Corporation, needs a few bodyguards to protect her from harm due to recent monster attacks. Both Dawn and Serenity see it as a chance to see those that they love again. But will they be able to withstand the challenge of the impeding monster attacks?

Prologue

It is a time where even the most legendary of creatures still lurk in the world. Dragons, phoenixes, beasts and even monsters wander freely in the world, although their frequent appearances are fading. The humans are taking over the planet nowadays. Their numbers are growing at quick rates. This has caused all the legendary and amazing creatures of our world to go into hiding, unless they feel safe as well as secure with humans taking over the wide space across the planet. Peace once reigned in this happy world – until a dark and devastating power was unleashed.

The very circle of life is being threatened. Not long ago, the company providing comfort and everyday needs for the humans had a breakthrough with the origins of the world. They had found out that the place where souls go when they die to the afterlife was called the Spirigam. It provided the dead with an eternal afterlife and also gave the planet life. This company, which was named Tulsa Corporation, was able to devise a way to use that power that gave the planet life for their own greedy causes. It was due to this that there sprung many unforeseen consequences.

Monsters have begun to multiply uncontrollably. Scientists who had used humans as experiments infusing them with Spirigam energy had ran in fear when these humans turned into these monsters that went around infecting others or killing anything that they encountered. Tulsa Corporation has tried its best to eliminate these monsters, but the problem is just about to spread through the world. Spirigam energy, as it has been researched so much, is rumoured to have goodness on life wherever it travels. However, this kind of energy is deadly and dangerous as well as powerful.

Too much of inhaling this energy can drive any human insane and may bring up unpredicted mutations that not even the immune system could fight off. With more of these people falling victim to the monsters, Tulsa Corporation has taken action. It has now launched a full offensive on the monster army. As well as that sounds, these monsters can easily turn themselves back into their human form at any stage, which makes it difficult for the Tulsa army to discover who are the real monsters in the villages and towns.

But not even the army can stop such a huge threat like this. To help with the situation, other actions have been put to the plan. Lilac Tulsa, CEO and chairwoman of Tulsa Corporation, has enforced conscription upon men who can fight in several villages and towns. As devastated as their loved ones would be, there would be fatal consequences if the orders of the Corporation would be disobeyed. Many villages and towns were waving farewell to their loved ones, even in a small town called Kalona.

“Move it along!” said a soldier, motioning for the driver of a truck to enter the town of Kalona. “C’mon, we gotta keep moving and get all the men that can fight to the Corporation headquarters!”

Many trucks were driving into Kalona at such a slow and steady pace. These were dangerous times after all. If they were not careful enough, then the Spirigam monsters would pounce at them ready to attack, perhaps even to infect or kill. The townspeople watched on as the trucks arrived. Kalona was one of the few towns on the planet that had not yet been infected by the Spirigam monsters. No one had been attacked yet.

A young girl of the age of fifteen looked out from her window hiding behind the curtains. At the moment, she was living in a big mansion that overlooked the majority of the town. This was only because her family had once worked for Tulsa Corporation and earned a lot of money. She was tall, skinny, had long black hair that went down to shoulder length and crystal eyes. Her name was Dawn Turner.

Dawn looked out at the soldiers that had just arrived. There was so much concern and panic expressed on her face at that moment. She wanted to cry so much and didn’t in the end. She felt so depressed right now. It was Lilac Tulsa who was enforcing conscription everywhere in the world. It meant that the majority of men who could fight had to join the army in this war against the monsters.

A hand tapped on her shoulder. She turned around to see her butler, William Jenkins, standing there as prompt and ready as he ever could be. That same sad expression was still seen on her face, as she heard him speak.

“Miss Turner, Serenity and Hiro have arrived downstairs,” he informed her.

“Thank you for telling me,” nodded Dawn, and then turned her attention back to the soldiers outside in the trucks coming to Kalona before asking him one question. “Is he still here?”

“Yes,” replied Jenkins. “He is still here.”

As Jenkins left Dawn alone to respect her wishes, she glanced out again at the window to see a man with long silver hair and dark brown eyes emerge from one of the trucks. Anyone would recognise him right away; it was none other than the legendary first-class general named Hahira Taro. He was famous and a war hero well known in the world for his many successful missions. People hadn’t even started to question his ability to handle the war against the monsters.

Dawn looked away from the window when his gaze fell upon her. She thought to herself. What am I doing? That’s not the way I should be doing it. Come on, Dawn, and focus! You don’t want your best friend to be conscripted into the army, right? What if I go instead?

She walked downstairs to the living area, where there was a man and woman standing there in front of the fire talking to each other. Dawn just smiled and watched them talk. After all, they were childhood friends and they went out with each other. If only she could ever taste that kind of love with someone special to her –

“Oh,” said the man, and turned to face Dawn. “So you decided to come down, huh?”

This was Hiro Inez. He was a tall man with short black spiky hair and brown curious eyes. His gaze was on her instantly. Hiro saw Dawn as a younger sister just as Dawn had seen him as an older brother. His face lit up and he smiled brightly.

“Good for you to join us both,” he assumed, and watched her come closely to them.

“It’s … lovely to see you, Dawn,” said the woman standing next to Hiro.

Dawn knew who she was and there was no doubt about it. This was Serenity Kafka, the love of Hiro’s life. The three of them had grown up together through childhood. She was also tall, had dark brown hair and emerald green eyes. Her presence in the room made everyone so comfortable and relaxed for some odd reason. It was her calmness that mostly gave it off.

“Serenity?” said Dawn. “I thought that Hiro came here to –”

“I wanted to say goodbye to him,” cut in Serenity. “I don’t when I’m going to see him again.”

Dawn knew it was hard for them. They were both two years older than her being seventeen years old, but she was only still a kid really in the eyes of everyone at the age of fifteen. There was one person missing from their group and it was the one guy that Dawn had grown close to all of these years.

“Where is he?” asked Dawn, gesturing to Hiro.

“He said he’d be ready soon,” said Hiro with a not-wanting-to-talk tone in his voice.

“I don’t want him to go!” she shouted.

“Dawn!” said Serenity suddenly. “If we betray the wishes of Lilac Corporation, then we are as good as dead! You do want this crisis to be solved, don’t you?”

“I know, but …”

“He can take care of himself, Dawn. Plus Hiro will always be with him.”

“Yeah, you can trust me,” nodded Hiro with some confidence in his voice. “I won’t let that idiot out of my sight, I assure you.”

“Thanks, but … I should go instead,” shrugged Dawn.

“WHAT?” they both chorused.

“It’s forbidden for females to go!” argued Hiro. “I wouldn’t allow it and neither would Serenity. Dawn, you’re not taking his place in this. I’ll look after him as much as I can and I promise you that nothing bad will happen to either of us. We’ll look out for each other. We ARE like brothers, remember?”

Dawn wouldn’t take any of this. She ran out of the room and just sobbed in her room upstairs. As she continued to cry, a hand was placed on her shoulder. It felt warm and so comforting. She knew who it was.

“You,” she whispered.

“Yeah,” said that familiar voice. “Me.”

Dawn turned to see her best friend, Dusk Johnson. He was a tall young man with shoulder length silver hair and blue eyes. It pained Dusk to see his best friend like this. He wanted to say something, anything to her, but the words wouldn’t come out of his mouth. Just seeing her in this state had made him speechless.

“I don’t want you to go,” whispered Dawn, as she wiped her tears away.

Dusk came to her side and lifted her chin up as they both directly looked at each other in the eyes. “I don’t want to go either,” he said. “I know what you’re going to say. You would want me to stay here in the village, but … it’s not right, you know? Tulsa’s orders are FINAL and she wants all men to be cast into the army. Hey, come on! Cheer up! I’m going to write to you as much as I can!”

“You … mean it?” asked Dawn.

“Cross my heart and hope to die hell I mean it!” he said loudly and proudly. “I’m going to be talking about you like mad, Dawn! By the time I’m finished doing this, the guys would love to have you as their friend and be jealous. And just watch! I’m going to fight alongside Hahira Taro!”

“So you’ll see the front lines?”

“Hell yeah! I’m not gonna sit back and let some assholes do the work by themselves.”

“But you promise you’ll come back?”

“Dawn, I’d sacrifice everything just to come back. Of course I will come back and that’s my personal promise to you.”

Several hours later, all the men had been rounded up at the town central. Many women and children had also gathered here to wave farewell to their loved ones. It was stupid that they did, but Dawn and Dusk did have feelings for each other. Yet they would never admit them to one another. It was ironic that they would be separated for a long time and not able to admit those feelings.

Dawn felt like she was at a funeral in the town central. The atmosphere was dark and silent, even a pin could be heard to be dropped. Her face was filled with sorrow and pain to see Dusk leave Kalona for the first time. They had always been together. After all, it was she who had found him lying on the streets at a young age and Jenkins had offered him a home at the Turner Mansion. Dawn’s family had died when she was very young, but had left her a huge fortune. It was up to her what happened with that.

And it was her who decided to give Dusk a home. Dusk had been ever so grateful for this and the two had grown closer over the eight years that they had known each other. But now, here Dawn was – waving goodbye to the very man that gave her some meaning in her life. As the men piled on to the back of the trucks, Dusk was the last to get on. Before he was able to get on, Dawn ran towards him.

“Stop!” yelled a soldier.

“No,” said Hahira, raising a hand to the soldiers who looked like they were going to stop her. “Let her bid farewell to the very person close to her heart.”

“But, General Hahira –”

“Enough. Tulsa Corporation entrusted me as your general and commanding officer. Step down.”

As the soldiers stepped down, Dawn carried on running towards Dusk.

“What’s wrong?” he asked her when she got there.

“I forgot to give you something,” she panted, and then gave him a kiss on his cheek.

Dusk watched Dawn leave back to the crowd. He placed his hand on the cheek where he had kissed her and smiled, thinking to himself. I’ll never wash this cheek again, Dawn Turner. You just watch. He clambered on to the truck and all of the trucks began to leave Kalona.

Dawn and Dusk’s eyes met one last time. They didn’t want to leave each other, but what choice did they have? As the last truck left, Dawn whispered to herself. “Goodbye, Dusk. I hope you’ll be safe …”

Serenity came to her side and they were the last ones to wave Dusk and Hiro farewell. The crowd had left and only the silence of the sunset was to be heard.

Chapter 1: A New Path

Two years had passed since that fateful day when many men, including Dusk and Hiro, had been taken to Tulsa Corporation to be in the army and fight in the war against the monsters that were taking over the world. Things had never been the same again in the next two years. The majority of society had been quiet. Cities, towns and villages no longer stayed in touch with each other. A long deep silence had only come out of the events unfolding in these past two years.

Dawn Turner, now a young woman of seventeen years old, had matured since she watched Dusk Johnson leave the town of Kalona. She had grown up so much after Dusk had left Kalona with Hiro and those who had been conscripted into the army. But it seemed that a part of her had been lost since Dusk had left. Nowadays, Dawn was usually quiet and seen alone standing at the cliff that overlooked the town. It was as if she was expecting her friend to return … but he didn’t. Yet she still stood on that cliff hoping he would make his appearance soon.

She would do this after a day of staying in the mansion. Jenkins had been against Dawn going to the cliff because it was a vulnerable place to be attacked by monsters. But Dawn didn’t care and ever since she had been left alone with Serenity, she had taught herself to fight just hoping that she would be able to join the army one day. There was one fact, however, about the army: women weren’t allowed to join. They had been told to stay at home to look after their families and houses.

Would Dawn simply allow herself to be doomed to this pathetic fate? No, she wouldn’t. Someday, she told herself, someday she would leave Kalona and find Dusk out there in the wilderness and perhaps even beyond that. It was her dream. She had dreamt about finding Dusk. So far, she had pictured herself battling the monsters and trying to break through the wilderness. But would that dream become a reality for her?

Only time could tell.

“Dawn? Dawn!” came a soft, calm voice. “There you are!”

It was Serenity.

Dawn knew that she was there and wasn’t particularly alarmed by her presence. She was used to Serenity always trying to find her when she had finished her training in the art of White Magic. That was Serenity, always trying to perfect her charm in that kind of magic, as Dawn had imagined her to be. Despite her White Magic training, Serenity was good to be around. She was one of those comforting people that you wouldn’t find in the world now.

“What are you doing here?” asked Serenity, as she sat next to Dawn on the cliff. “I guess it’s not just to watch the sunset, is it?”

“No, you should know already,” replied Dawn. She rose to her feet and stared out into the red sky. “I’m still waiting after two years and I just know he’ll return. He kept writing to me, but then he … he stopped writing six months ago. I don’t know what happened, but I know he’s all right.” She turned to face Serenity. “What’s going on with you and Hiro?”

“Me and Hiro?” said Serenity, jumping a little. “Well … the last time he wrote to me, he told me how he was still fighting in Hahira Taro’s squad. Apparently, they are doing very well in the war.”

But the war would be over now if they were doing well, thought Dawn.

“Is something wrong?” asked Serenity, as her dark brown hair swayed in the air due to the slight breeze.

“It still intrigues me as to how the war keeps raging on,” she sighed, as she watched Serenity rise to her feet as well. “I don’t want to stay in Kalona and feel helpless anymore, Serenity. I want to fight in the army!”

Serenity raised an eyebrow. “It’s forbidden for us to fight, remember?”

“Screw the rules! I don’t care what Lilac Tulsa has to say, anyway.” Dawn sighed and calmed herself down. “I’m sorry about that, Serenity. Lately, I just keep growing more and more impatient.”

“Then you need patience,” said Serenity with a sad look expressed upon her face. “It’s coming up here that is what’s making you be impatient. Come on, Dawn. I’m going to read to the young children soon at the nursery to get them to sleep. Care to join me?”

“Perhaps you’re right,” shrugged Dawn and smiled. “Maybe I am too impatient. Sure, I’ll come with you.”

Serenity was using her White Magic training to take her mind off Hiro, but Dawn was still clinging on to Dusk’s return. Would they ever return? What was really going on in the war? Dawn had a point about the war being ended soon; the war should have been over had they been working hard and winning. But there were more sinister things going on in Treneza …

I thought you were my fairytale, thought Dusk, as he ducked from a monster that had tried to slash him in the shoulder. Memories of you … are just like a scattered dream. I want to bring the pieces back together, but I keep getting distracted by these frigging buggers!

He took out his sword and stabbed the nearest monster to him. The wolf monster fell and disappeared in small glittery lights; this was what happened to anyone or anything that died. Dusk turned his attention to the other soldiers surrounding him. They were falling one by one to the monsters.

“Crap! Crap!” he muttered under his breath.

Running forward, Dusk knew what he was about to do was very risky, but it had to be done. He skidded across the muddy floor and slashed the monsters that he passed by. Many of them fell; others were still trying to attack him.

“Get away from me, you monsters!” yelled Dusk, glaring coldly and angrily at the monsters that were trying to attack him. He pulled out a gun and pointed both of his weapons at the monsters that came to a halt. “Yeah, that’s right! Freeze in terror because Dusk just became, um … bad! He became big and bad!”

But the wolf monsters weren’t taking these compliments. Dusk tried not to show his fear so much. Fighting on the front lines for almost a year now had taken a lot out of him. He had been trained for six months and then for the other half of that year, he had been through more vigorous training. It had all led up to this. He couldn’t give up now! Not on the girl that he loved for that matter!

“Step back,” said Hiro, who had appeared holding his long wide sword. “Dusk, you don’t want to get yourself killed, do you?”

“What? Shut up! Get out!” said Dusk, who put his gun away and held his own sword with both hands. “I’m not letting you have all the fun, Hiro. It just goes down to sense that you gotta share the monsters out.”

“So you thought you could handle them yourself?”

“Eh? I didn’t say that!”

Suddenly, a wolf pounced in the air towards Hiro. He swung his sword around and a blue aura surrounded his weapon. He shot that blue aura at the wolf and it was destroyed, thus, bursting into glittery lights.

I must teach myself that kind of magic, thought Dusk. No, wait! That’s not magic, is it? It’s an ability equipped to the weapon. Crap, I really got to read up, haven’t I?

“You like my abilities, don’t you?” smiled Hiro, as if he had just read Dusk’s mind.

Dusk scowled. “You’re only lucky because Hahira accepted you out of sympathy!”

“I wouldn’t go as far as saying that, Dusk,” replied the highly trained warrior, who then began to spin around slashing more wolves that were coming at him. He landed on the ground and there were only two more left. “You want to take these?”

“With pleasure,” nodded Dusk, who then charged at the two wolves and slashed them easily with his sword. Both of them went down and he began to pant a little. “My … it takes a lot of you … huh?”

“All of these men died …” sighed Hiro, as he looked down at the five or six men that lay motionlessly on the ground. “… And it was for a good cause as well. Lucky you, Dusk, being the only one that survived.”

“Well! You underestimate me, Hiro!” smiled Dusk cheekily, trying to stand brave and bold.

“He’s right,” came a voice from behind Dusk.

“Whoa,” stared Dusk, as he watched Hahira walk forwards towards Hiro.

“You’re a strong warrior, Hiro, but I think someone could surpass you one day other than me,” assumed Hahira, and then he turned his attention to Dusk. “I assume that you are Dusk Johnson of the Geon squad?”

“Well, yeah,” said Dusk. “But Geon was killed by one of the big monsters.”

“Since you survived, I’m assigning you to my squad,” said Hahira. “There will be no Geon squad anymore.” A soldier came to his side and he gave him a piece of paper. “This is the report for the latest mission, Gomez. Hurry and take it to the nearest command centre. Tulsa must know the update of our situation.”

I can’t believe what I’m hearing, thought Dusk. I’m actually in Hahira’s squad! How cool is that? He then stood at attention when Hahira turned to face him again. “Thank you, General Hahira. I’ll take this on with full responsibility.”

“You are quite welcome, Dusk,” said Hahira, and then looked at the dead bodies. “We will have to bury them before the monsters find them again. We don’t want our men to be doomed to a horrible fate when their deaths have already been decided.” He then turned to the rest of the men. “We must make haste and return to camp. There, you can all relax and we will work on our next move tomorrow morning.”

As the rest of the men left, apart from Hahira and Hiro, Dusk turned to them both feeling a little embarrassed.

“Um, is it ok if I can write a letter?” he asked.

“Why? What’s wrong with that?” said Hiro.

“Geon never really liked us writing letters,” sighed Dusk. “The last time I wrote to Dawn, oh yeah … she’s my best friend. It was six months ago and I don’t want her to worry that –”

“It’s quite fine,” smiled Hahira. “Let’s get back to the camp and then we can sleep on this.”

A few hours later, Dusk found himself at a desk writing a letter to Dawn. He smiled, as he began to pour out some of his feelings that he had at that moment and wrote about the events that had just happened.

“Hey, Luke,” he said to a soldier nearby. “Could you put this in the letter pile?”

“Sure thing,” smiled the soldier. “And hey, welcome onboard to the squad.”

“Thanks.”

It was a week later that the letter finally reached Dawn’s address in Kalona. She was so eager to hear from him and now she was able to read his letter. She took it one day from the post and went to the cliff to read it. After all, she didn’t want to be distracted and so she read:

Dear Dawn (or Dawnie, whichever you like),

I know it’s been too long since my last letter. I don’t want you to worry about me because I’m fine. Today, I was assigned to Hahira Taro’s squad after surviving yet another monster onslaught. I was the lone survivor and I had to really hand it to Hiro, who partly helped me to get into the squad. How are things going in Kalona? Is Serenity still practicing her White Magic? Are there still warm breezes in the town? Are you still in the town gracing everyone with your presence?

I really wish you were here fighting by my side. There are too many monster attacks as of lately, but we’ve managed to calm the situation down. Hiro wrote to Serenity not long before I did saying how the war was going great. I wish I could say that the war is going great, but it’s somewhere in between over and not over. We’re advancing well and defeating the monsters, but they are still many defenceless people vulnerable to them. I can only hope that you’re safe, Dawn, because I don’t know what I’d do without you.

You were the one who took me in when no one else could. You were the one who put the smile back on my face whenever I was down. You are the one that makes me carry on fighting. I fight for you, Dawn, and this may sound stupid, but I don’t care. This is my personal letter to you and I just hope it won’t be my last.

Yours Truly,
Dusk Johnson

Dawn read through the letter once or twice more before smiling. She was so glad that Dusk was ok. She was glad that he wasn’t hurt or killed. She could jump for joy right now, but something had surprised her, though. How was it that he had managed to get into Hahira Taro’s squad? Dawn had heard it was pretty tough to get into his squad. But she decided to let that slide for now.

“Hey, Dawn!” came a voice from below next to the waterfall.

It was a boy named Fayt Cramer, who was not so much younger than her – two years to be precise. Dawn smiled weakly at him and waved. He was waving a wooden stick that he was using as a pretend sword. She laughed to herself. He never learns, does he? He’s going to hurt himself sometime soon …

“AAAAHHH!”

“There we go,” muttered Dawn under her breath.

“STUPID STICK! SON OF A –” began Fayt.

“Excuse me!” she shouted, and was now back on the flat ground. She had come down from the cliff and had slid down the slippery slope that led down to the waterfall. “I don’t think we’ll be using that language anytime soon, eh?”

“What language?” stared Fayt, pretending he hadn’t heard or said what he had said.

“Don’t play dumb with me,” giggled Dawn. “I knew you were going to start cursing again. Fayt, cursing doesn’t suit you at all. Besides, you’re too young to be even playing hero at the moment.”

“I’m fifteen, Dawn!” complained Fayt. “You underestimate me.”

“You remind me of Dusk too much,” she sighed sadly.

“Don’t even get me started on Dusk!” he said loudly. “It’s all been Dusk this, Dusk that! Did he ever write to you again? Besides, I used to whoop his ass all the time when we were fighting!”

“Liar,” was all Dawn said.

“I might do things like cursing, but I don’t lie!” shouted Fayt.

“Kids …” muttered Dawn.

She walked back to the town feeling satisfied by reading Dusk’s first letter in six months. She was wearing a smile on her face for once. Suddenly, a very nasty breeze picked up. Things went up in the air including people’s belongings and … paper?

A piece of paper blew right in Dawn’s face. As the breeze calmed down after a few moments, it fell to the ground. What’s this? She bent down to pick up the paper and it read:

By the request of Lilac Tulsa,

She needs two new bodyguards to protect her in Tulsa Corporation. The applicants must be female and either be able to use a sword or specialise in magic. Abilities in these two areas are useful. Apply within at Tulsa Corporation.

Yuri Tsetse
Head of Tulsa Security

“I’m going,” said Dawn, as she began to pack her things back at the mansion. Jenkins was against her leaving Kalona to apply to as Lilac Tulsa’s bodyguard, but he did have to respect her wishes as he listened to her go on with herself. “It’s a chance to finally get out of the town and who knows? Maybe us women are finally getting that one chance to be recognised as independent individuals.”

“Please consider this carefully, Miss Turner!” pleaded Jenkins. “I don’t want you to get hurt and besides, you are much safer in Kalona.”

“What’s this? Dawn’s leaving town?” said Serenity, who walked into the room and her eyes widened when she saw Dawn packing her things. “You’re leaving? Why?”

“To get a job?” shrugged Dawn, and continued to pack her things.

“But why have a job when you got all of this wealth?” laughed Serenity nervously. “I thought that you liked Kalona.” She closed the bag that Dawn was putting her things in and looked at her directly in the eyes. There was some concern there, but also some suspicion. “Is this anything to do with Dusk?”

“Ah! Good point, Serenity,” said Jenkins. “Well, Miss Turner?”

“Yes,” answered Dawn sometime later when she was done packing her stuff after opening the bag again. “I’ll get a chance to get out of town at last. I’ve never seen the world, Jenkins. I don’t want to stay in this town forever.”

“Well, she has a good point,” assumed Serenity.

“Then I would advise you go with her, Serenity.”

“What? Jenkins, I’m not even strong enough to be a bodyguard!”

“But Tulsa requires someone with strength or magic skills. You have your White Magic and Miss Turner has her strength. The pair of you should stick together.”

“That’s the best idea I’ve heard all day,” said Dawn, and then turned to Serenity. “Are you coming?”

Serenity sighed and then smiled as she nodded. “I’m coming. I can see Hiro then.”

“So it’s decided,” said Dawn, now looking at Jenkins. “I’m trusting you with the mansion, Jenkins. I’ll expect it to be the same as always. Understand?”

“Quite understood, Miss Turner,” nodded the butler.

Chapter 2: Dark Encounters

Dawn and Serenity set off for Treneza the next day by a small van that was owned by a friend of theirs called James Lucia, who was twenty-three years old. He was a tall guy with short black hair and brown eyes.

Dawn had done many favours for him and now it was his chance to repay them by giving them a ride to Treneza. The pair of them was pretty close and despite James not initially wanting her to do this, he also respected her wishes.

As the van set off, Dawn looked back at Kalona knowing that she didn’t have second thoughts about this. She wanted to see Dusk and Serenity wanted to see Hiro. It hurt them both to be without the ones that they cared about.

“I hope you’re ready for this, Dawn,” said James, as he continued to drive the van. “I don’t want to see you get hurt when you come back home to Kalona.”

“Can I ask you a personal question, James?” asked Serenity.

“Sure, go ahead.”

“Why didn’t you join the army two years ago?”

“That’s a good question, but I had my reasons. I wasn’t able to fight, I was too weak and that’s why I wasn’t conscripted into the army.”

James lowered his head and sighed. Dawn knew why he would often do this. His mother was taken by a monster and killed just before the war had properly begun. It saddened Dawn to still see James sad after almost three years now. To be truthful, Dawn actually saw James as a pretty strong fighter. She knew he didn’t want to join the army. He had stuck around the town because he felt he belonged there and since she was one of his only friends.

“Is it me or can I hear something going on at the back?” asked Dawn.

“It’s you,” shrugged Serenity.

“It’s not her,” said James. “I hear something, too. Wait, I’ll stop the van.” He stopped the van in the middle of the wilderness and looked at the back of the van.

Suddenly, Fayt and another man who had blue hair fell out of the wooden boxes at the back. They both moaned and Dawn could only exchange dark looks with Serenity and James.

“Fayt! Myth! What are you both doing here?” yelled Dawn as loud as she could, so that they all had to cover their ears. When she was done yelling, they sighed and felt relieved that she lowered the tone of her voice. “You’re supposed to be in Kalona. Why did you come here?”

“Well, we got pretty bored at the town,” replied Fayt. “Come on, big sis! I wasn’t going to wait until six months later for you to write to me and say you’re Lilac Tulsa’s bodyguard, eh?”

The other young man that stood next to him was quietly observing Dawn. His name was Myth Zion. He was just slightly shorter than James, had short blue hair and curious purple eyes. He looked bored and just looked around the van as if it had perked his interest.

“And what about you, Myth?” asked Dawn. “Well?”

“It was Fayt’s idea,” he shrugged. “I just went along with him because I heard the rumours that you were going to Tulsa Corporation …”

“And the rumours are true,” added Fayt. “You really ARE going to Treneza, right?”

“Yes, we are,” smiled Serenity. “James, let’s keep driving. There’s no point turning back to Kalona now and you can just take them back tomorrow morning.”

“So we get to see Tulsa Corporation?” asked Fayt excitedly.

“No, you don’t,” said Dawn harshly, and turned back to James. “Yeah, we should keep driving and just ignore this for now.”

James nodded and said nothing more to that. He started the engine again and they were moving again towards Treneza. Dawn felt quite tense with Fayt and Myth in the back of the van. How could they have known that she and Serenity were going to try out for being Tulsa’s bodyguards? Unless someone had let it slip …

Jenkins. He’s the only one that could’ve told anyone anything –

“Is something wrong, Dawn?” asked Serenity.

“I’m fine, how about you?” said Dawn.

“A little nervous about seeing Hiro again,” she smiled shyly. “I … it feels like the first time we ever went on a date, you know? I was so nervous back then and I’m so nervous right now.”

“If it makes you feel better, I’m nervous about meeting Dusk again,” said Dawn, smiling weakly.

The moment was sweet. It lasted until –

BANG.

“What the hell was that?” shouted Fayt at James.

“I don’t know!” called James. “The van shouldn’t be doing that.”

BANG.

“Don’t you think we might have popped a tyre or something?” asked Myth.

“We shouldn’t have,” shrugged James. “We should be all right. If it does it again, then I guess I’ll –”

BANG.

Some of them fell out the van this time since the doors opened up. It was Dawn and Fayt who fell off, whilst James, Serenity and Myth remained sitting there. It wasn’t until a few moments later that they noticed that they were gone.

“James! Turn around! We have to find them!” shouted Serenity.

“Ah, they can take care of themselves …” muttered Myth.

“I can’t because if you haven’t noticed, we’re being attacked by the monsters,” replied James, who pointed towards the monsters that were chasing after them. “But Myth is right. Dawn and Fayt should be fine …”

Serenity eyed the monsters closely and used her White Magic to cast Protect around the van. “This should hold for now. But I don’t know how long for.”

“It’ll be enough for us to get over the cliff,” assumed James.

“Don’t tell me we’re going over the cliff!” exclaimed Serenity.

“Yeah, he said so,” sighed Myth. I’m glad I actually came now.

Dawn and Fayt had fallen off the van. Both of them went rolling down the hill until they landed on the soft grass. Dawn had never felt so grateful that the grass ever existed apart from that moment. She got up slowly shaking ever so slightly and turned to Fayt who was rubbing his scratches on his face, which were stained in blood.

“Here, Fayt,” she said, dabbing a tissue against his wounds, “let me sort that out.”

“Thanks, sis,” smiled Fayt, despite the pain that he was feeling. “The van went the other way. I think it went over the cliff and reached the other side.”

“Then that means that they’ll have to carry on to Treneza,” stated Dawn.

“Wait, but they could wait for us!” said Fayt.

“With the monsters after them? I know James and he won’t take any chances.”

“Maybe you’re right, the guy is pretty wise when it comes to these things.”

“But from now on, we could be attacked by monsters ourselves,” said Dawn, as she unleashed her sword from its holster that was fastened tightly on to her belt. “We’re going to have to be careful. Just stay behind me, Fayt, and you won’t get hurt.”

“Look, I ain’t a kid anymore …” began Fayt.

“Fayt, don’t argue with me,” she growled. She noticed that several monsters had appeared in the form of wolves. Raising her sword high and keeping her eye on the wolves, they approached the pair of them, thus, circling them. “You’re too young to be fighting.”

“Too young? Dusk got sent to the army at MY age!” he argued. “But you know … I have had my practice now and I’m ready to put it to the test!” He unveiled his own sword that he held with two hands in contrast to Dawn who only had to hold hers with one hand. “So you can either keep arguing or we can fight together. What do you think, eh?”

As one of the wolves pounced on them, Dawn swung her sword around and killed it after a few stabs and slashes. The other wolves began to run at them. Both Dawn and Fayt began to fight the wolves off. The fight lasted a good ten minutes until … all of the wolves were finally gone.

Fayt panted and went down on to one knee. He was smiling as he tried to catch his breath.

“Wow … never had to … fight like that … before …” he managed to say.

In the meantime, Dawn hadn’t even broken a sweat yet.

“If you think that’s hard, then you’ve got some things to come,” she said. “The fights only get harder from here, Fayt. Are you still going to fight or do I have to protect you all the way?”

“N – No!” he argued. “I want to join the army just like Dusk and Hiro did. That’s right! Fayt Cramer is going to join the army!”

Has he lost his mind? Does he know the sacrifices he will have to make? Dawn sighed. She remembered what it was like with Dusk who had hardly written to her at all. He had little contact with her ever since he had been conscripted to the army. But if it’s what he wants to do, then I can’t stop him. She turned to face him. “All right then,” she said. “If you’ve made up your mind, then I guess I can’t stop you, right?”

“YES!” jumped Fayt. “Bingo! I win … for once!”

“For once, yeah,” nodded Dawn. “But … you still have a long way to go.”

The pair of them walked down the Kalona Plains now having to take a different route to what the van had been taking. It would now take them longer to get to Treneza, but at least the monsters might not have appeared much. After all, Kalona was still one of the safest places in the world. Yet that was what scared Dawn and Fayt. Leaving their home only meant that there would be even more danger in their lives. Neither of them wanted to stay at home, but did they want to feel helpless? The answer was obvious and it was no!

As the pair of them came to the end of the path that they were following, it was Fayt who noticed that there was a dead end. He stamped his feet and got angry as he threw his sword into a wall. However, it got stuck and he was forced to pull it out. Dawn was angry too that there was a dead end, but the only way now to get to Treneza would be to go through the dark and dangerous Herr-Zai Caves.

“So what now?” moaned Fayt, as he finally pulled his sword out of the wall.

“The Herr-Zai Caves! What else?” said Dawn. “There is no other way to Treneza.”

“Why don’t we just wait for the army to come and pick us up?” suggested Fayt.

“What? You scared or something?” mocked Dawn.

“Hey, hey!” he shouted. “I’m not scared of the darkness! Ya hear me?”

But saying you’re afraid of the darkness makes you more vulnerable, thought Dawn. He should never say things like that. We have to make haste or else we won’t make it until tomorrow. I really do want to make it by nightfall. “Don’t say things like that, Fayt. Who knows? There maybe beings of darkness in there just waiting for the right time to strike. I don’t want to wait all night, so c’mon.”

“Fine then …” he muttered.

Dawn and Fayt entered the Herr-Zai Caves with both of them wondering how they were going to get out of this. They both had their swords out ready just in case they were attacked. As they walked through the dark caves, the only light that was being reflected only came from the glowing emerald on Dawn’s necklace.

At least this comes in handy sometimes, she thought.

“I’m glad that there is some use to that emerald after all!” remarked Fayt.

“Hey, at least the merchant was right,” shrugged Dawn.

“The merchant looked real dodgy to me in my opinion,” he smiled cheekily.

“Well, you would think that, wouldn’t you?” she said.

“I don’t want anyone ripping you off, Dawn,” assumed Fayt. “Besides, I want you to be happy. If you’re happy, then I’m happy.”

The pair of them continued through the Herr-Zai Caves never dropping their guard. They were both suspicious and cautious all the way through. After fighting many monsters in the darkness, they finally saw a light through the end of the tunnel. As they finally exited the caves, Fayt had to shield his eyes from the sun.

“What’s wrong?” asked Dawn.

“Ah, just been in darkness for too long,” shrugged Fayt. “Damn it! They didn’t wait for us! They’ve gone ahead to Treneza!”

“It doesn’t matter,” she said. “We’ll carry on to Treneza and get some rest there.” But then her thoughts consumed her mind again. What’ll happen if we meet again? What will I say to him? I don’t know what to think of him anymore …

“Yoo-hoo! Dawnie!” called Fayt.

“Huh?”

She saw he had gone on ahead without her.

“You’re a slow coach, sis! Honestly,” he called back to her.

“I’m coming after you, you realise that?” said Dawn, as she sprinted in the Treneza Plains to catch up with him. She had put her sword away in its holster and was now hurrying after him. “You’re not going to get to Treneza anytime before me, little bro!”

Suddenly, the ground shook. Fayt went falling on to the ground and Dawn hurried towards him, whilst trying to keep her own balance. She bent down to Fayt and held on to him. What’s going on now? Please don’t tell me it’s what I think it is. Fayt looked a little scared, but tried to show his bravery by clinging on to Dawn, too. They both were wondering what on earth was going on. That was until …

BANG.

A serpent monster rose from the earth and sent Dawn and Fayt flying into the air. As Fayt hit the ground, he had managed to cling on to consciousness. But he saw that Dawn was unfortunate enough and had fainted.

“Dawn!” he shouted, but she couldn’t hear him.

The serpent was hissing at her and bent in towards her. Fayt knew he had to do something, anything! But he couldn’t find his own sword! It had gone missing when the serpent had emerged from the ground. He tried to find something to hurt it with, but couldn’t find anything. There was only one option for it. Gathering every last ounce in his body, Fayt rose to his feet and ran at the serpent.

“Hey! You son of a bitch!” he yelled. “GET AWAY FROM HER!”

The serpent didn’t listen to Fayt. It hissed at Dawn and looked like it was about to go in for the kill –

BANG.

Fayt heard a loud screeching noise and then his eyes widened by the person who he saw. The guy was riding a motorbike and armed with a gun as well as a sword in his holster. He watched the guy get off the motorbike and look at the serpent, which was now facing him. A cheeky smile crept upon this newcomer’s face.

“Time to teach you a lesson,” glared Fayt coldly, as he unleashed his sword from its holster.
