In this thread, we post wacky news reports from all over the world. Make sure it's appropriate for all readers of the forums and make sure to provide a date and a valid source from where it came! (Note: Don't worry about when it happened. As long as it's wacky, or some other adjective to describe anything outlandish, go ahead and post)

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. - Ottawa County will pay about $40,000 to correct an embarrassing typo on its Nov. 7 election ballot: The "L" was left out of "public."

A total of 170,000 ballots will have to be reprinted.

The mistake appeared in the text of a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would ban some types of affirmative action.

The word "public" was misspelled one of the six times it appears, county Clerk Daniel C. Krueger said Tuesday. Five or six people in his office had proofread the ballot, but it was an election clerk who found the mistake early last week.

"It's just one of those words," Krueger said. "Even after we told people it was in there, they still read over it."

The 30-year-old traditional festival of eel-"bowling" in the fishing village of Lyme Regis, England, was canceled in July after complaints from an animal rights activist that it was disrespectful to eels. In the ritual, teams of anglers stand on platforms and swing a giant (but dead) conger eel, attached to the ceiling, to see who will be the last person standing. Said a spokesman for the charitable event, which raises money for lifeboat crews, "But it's a dead conger, for Pete's sake. I shouldn't think the conger could care one way or another." [Reuters, 7-29-06]

More Ironies: (1) WEWS-TV in Cleveland reported in August that the pregnancy rate among girls at Timken High School in Canton, Ohio, was 13 percent, despite the fact that the school's athletic teams are known as the Trojans. (2) Police Chief Michael Chitwood of Daytona Beach, Fla., reported that his house was burglarized in August during the time he was speaking to a Neighborhood Watch group on crime prevention. (3) In August, Kosco, a police dog assigned to the Watertown, N.Y., force, was the first cop on the scene to bring down Mark A. Adams, 22, who had eluded officers for seven hours after violating probation for cruelty to his pet dog. Chinese Government Denies Performance By Rapper Jay-Z
By Roman Wolfe
Date: 10/11/2006 4:30 am

A proposed concert in Shanghai by rapper Jay-Z has been denied by the Chinese government. by the country's Ministry of Culture.

The rapper was supposed to make his debut in China at Hongkou Football Stadium on Oct. 23, but the country's Ministry of Culture denied local promotional company KS Productions the needed permits.

Government officials banned Jay-Z's performance because of the vulgar language contained on some of his recordings.

Critics of the decision noted the Ministry of Culture's decision to allow recent performances by rap group The Black Eyed Peas, citing the suggestive nature of some of the group's racier lyrics and rock group The Rolling Stones, who gave their first concert in the country in April as part of their "A Bigger Bang" tour.

Jay-Z has ten dates left on his 27-date world tour, which started in Amsterdam, Holland and winds down in Melbourne, Australia.

He is currently finishing his tour of Africa, with upcoming shows in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, South Africa.

On Oct. 18, Jay-Z will head to Thailand, followed by dates in South Korea and Taiwan, before wrapping his world tour with a run of dates through Australia.

In related news, the video for Jay-Z's "Show Me What You Got" is expected to debut on television next Monday. The recently leaked single is from his comeback album Kingdom Come.

Corrections officers found a hypodermic needle inside the burrito that Gonzales brought Tuesday to a female inmate at the Rio Arriba County jail, according to a report filed in Rio Arriba County Magistrate Court.
