i know of somethings that i'm going to get him.

i've though about getting him this good smelling cologne but he said if he got it, he wouldn't wear it.

He's a guy. You don't have to get anything extravagant or symbolic. Just something that the guy could use that he wouldn't normally buy himself.
As lame as it sounds, boxers are great. And if there's a joke behind it, even better.
Buy him a CD from one of his favourite bands, or even just iTunes gift card. Buy him the DVD of a movie he really likes.
Or shit, something as simple as t-shirt is always nice.

Hmm, if you play any insterment than try to learn something for him by Christmas and play it. But if not, get him some sheet music for him to play if he plays any insterement(s). If not, you could get him a CD of one of his favorite Artist that he doesn't have.
