Apprentice xehanort (or terranort) is important because he was the one who started all of the chaos in the series. He banished ansem the wise, created the heartless, split into ansem and xemnas, and basically was responsible for the destruction of many worlds. out of all of xehanort`s five incarnations, he is arguably the most important mainly because he is the catalyst for everything wrong in the kh universe

Apprentice Xehanort was an amnesiac individual taken under Ansem the Wise's care. While researching the mysteries of the heart, he decided to apply his knowledge on the new apprentice to try and find out about his past. After reflecting on how inhuman his research started to become, Ansem decided to close it, but Xehanort wanted to continue, so behind his back, he did (alongside the other five apprentices). Afterward, he goes maniac and decides to use everybody as his guinea pig and uses his Keyblade to release everyone's heart (including his). This is when everyone has their heart separated from their body, Ansem and Xemnas are created and the other five founding members of the Organization, they all banish Ansem, Xehanort's Heartless and Nobody each go their way to accomplish their mutual goal: Kingdom Hearts and the series of KINGDOM HEARTS starts here after these fateful events are flowing.

In summation, the point of an amnesiac Terra-Xehanort was to serve as a man curious to get his memories back and would use EVERY SINGLE method to get them back.
