Looks better than Missing-Link too 🤭

No doubt it will be just as scummy with microtransactions though

Umm…

Already has a confirmed release window of Spring 2025 too…

Looks like a beta starts on 9/26, so I doubt Missing Link would launch around that time.

Here’s a trailer:

I just don’t get why ML exists in this format when both Disney and SE will have their own geolocation games between this and DQ Walk. If it weren’t for this game likely being in development for a while as well, I would be concerned if Missing Link is even still happening.
Honestly I feel like DQ Walk being hugely successful is part of the reason why ML exists in this format..
Pokemon GO type games are still quite big in Japan I feel, and they probably wanted more of that.

I can't imagine what it must be like to be on the ML development team right now, or Nomura himself. Things surely have not been going as planned lately.

Yeah but when Disney also has their own game in the same format, it seems like they are just making it harder for ML to succeed. Neither company is going to be as invested in ML as they are in their own individual products.

DQ Walk is one thing as it’s years old at this point. The timing of bringing another game like this to market makes sense from SE’s standpoint. But Disney releasing this just months after Missing Link is supposed to release feels a bit like a slap in the face. But maybe SE is just that far behind schedule, which is also not a good thing for their relationship with Disney.

I guess it still isn’t clear if this will be a global title unless someone can confirm otherwise. Maybe it’ll be Japan only while ML will be global?

Agreed. I wish ML had gone for more stylized graphics. Would have loved character models that veered a bit closer to this, kind of following the look of the UX artstyle but in 3D.

Disney Steps actually has Mickey Mouse with you. That’s already a plus for that game.

Missing-Link’s open world is so barren of Disney outside of a jpeg. It’d be great if you could choose a character from throughout the series to join your character on a journey, whether an original character or from Disney.

I’ve been very worried about how Disney works in this game because in the like five times they’ve shown the game off, they’ve refused to show off worlds or story from the Disney side. We know Pinocchio is first up, but I really hope it doesn’t end up just being something like a the GPS world gets wrapped up in a theme and that’s it.

I guess it's a bit of a mystery, but probably because of the long development time and delays I assume?
And you have to wonder how much of communication SE's KH team have with other Disney game departments..

As mentioned in the article I shared a few posts ago, Disney does coordinate their releases with their dev partners.

Maybe ML will release sometime in late October or November and have a little time to get its footing before this comes out in the spring. Just seems like bad timing with the weather.

I just hope we’re not looking at a delay until sometime after Disney Step releases. Considering they haven’t narrowed down the 2024 release window yet, it seems like that could be a possibility.

This really is going to be the make or break element for this game I think. If we get fully realized Disney worlds with the characters, voice acting, maybe even party members, I think the game could still stand out. But if that’s the case, they need to start marketing that stuff soon.

I mean, I know they're both geolocation games and in that way are competing in a certain sense, but they aren't really targeting the same core audiences are they? This seems like Disney's Pikmin Walk or whatever while KHML is Disney's Pokemon Go. At first glance anyway.

Or a more antiquated Disney Boys/Girls way of looking at it from their perspective might be that they think Disney Step is the "girl" geolocation game (a lot of bright pastels, sparkles and a female lego friends-esque lead avatar) and KHML is the "boy" geolocation game (gothic scala, battle and combat focus, etc), so they have one targeting both in their minds, perhaps.

Oh cool, we know more about Disney Step - a game that was revealed a week ago or so - than Missing Link. Coooooool.

Jokes aside, I'm very surprised Step already has a release date and trailer. I think that tweet says a sort of open beta is underway too?

Missing Link, where are you...

Well Yakuza somehow managed to come to Switch before a *proper* KH release.

I still have no idea why they didn't even at least bother porting 1.5+2.5 at least
1.5+2.5 aggressively targets performance and good load times, and has a lot of code alterations to account for a 60fps target that the Switch may not be able to hit. Yeah, they're PS2 games but KH2 has kind of funky code and KH1 has REALLY funky code. They couldn't hit 60fps on PS3 for this reason, which is much more comparable to Switch hardware.

I'm not saying it's impossible, and it definitely would have benefited them to put in the effort, but it's definitely a tricky job.

They could've remade them in a different, more steady, engine. Outsource it to Tose like they did for CCR and Pixel Remasters.

And even if not that much, I would still prefer even just 1 native game over a hundred cloud games. If it's gotta be just BBS or just DDD, then so be it.

Oh, no doubt it's possible, obviously, just time consuming, especially if the folks who did the HD ReMixes are busy elsewhere, since a lot of their code is pretty weird and crazy

Playing the Epic Mickey demo and man, it would be great to get the Mad Doctor and Oswald in Kingdom Hearts.

Looks like Japan is also getting Melody of Memory 2 Disney Music Parade Encore, a new Disney rhythm action game. No word on a release outside Japan and Asia yet.

Opening Movie:

Gameplay:

EDIT: It’s either a sequel or port of the version for mobile phones. The original still came out after Melody of Memory. Lol

Funny enough, the original was published by Taito which is owned by Square Enix. Not sure who’s publishing this version.

As a game programmer, I have this itch to just take their codebase and do it myself. ><

That being said I don't think I'd want to be a dev on a game that I'd rather experience as a player. I can't imagine getting story updates by being a dev on the kh team...

By the by, this is why I'm always sceptical of rumours about KH in Fortnite, etc. Afaik, Disney prefers pushing it's own stuff, and only EXTREMELY begrudgingly acknowledge KH, and sometimes only when a game of theirs fails.

They *could* put Sora in a game, but they could also put in Mickey and use that as advertisement for Epic Mickey, the game they actually care about and want to do well.

Collabs generally come from the SE half of the family, but even in places where they would make sense (e.g. Opera Omnia, War of the Visions) they don't always happen.

Like, yeah, KH appeared in FFBE. But Valkyrie Profile appears a lot more, and that's a dead series compared to KH. KH appears a whole lot less than you would expect on SE's side.

Disney is in full "we have KH at home" mode.

normally I'd shake my head at a statement like this for being inflammatory and lacking any evidence, but I like your chutzpah! I'm with you! Disney is killing Kingdom Hearts!
