Ah! So the final battle in Kingdom Hearts is going to be Sora vs Xion in the Final World! I mean we already saw it but the thumbnail doesn't lie.

As for the state of Final Fantasy, I had no idea it was that bad. I haven't played Rebirth or XVI because I don't have a PS5. But even if I did, from what I saw didn't look too interesting. I haven't even played the FF7 first remake and I have it and a PS4 but my interest just hasn't been there. I've been playing FF12 Zodiac Age. It's not the ATB system but it's Gambit system plays very well. I wish other FF games had experimented with that system more.

Will FF going back to turn based really change much tho
What will change profitability is not making games that cost the gdps of small countries. Persona 5 made less money, but you don't see Atlus sad that it didn't meet expectations.

What's FF's market? FFXVI is unrecognisable as an RPG. But it's also not good enough to compete with DMC. It was also hugely expensive. FFVIIR2 tacked a different way, but they also added the same open world mechanics half of gaming is chasing now. But again, now you're no longer competing with Persona, you're competing with Breath of the Wild. And you might outsell BOTW, but the budget was magnitudes larger.

So both games underperformed. What does SE do now? Neither path worked.

Whenever Nomura retires, do you think Tai Yasue would make for a good successor, since he’s been co-director for so long?
I think he would be a fantastic person to take over. His involvement in the lead up to 2.8 and 3 was so lovely to see, his passion and respect for the series was refreshing and he seems like a great guy.

But of course, he's Canadian!

My ex wife (who hated KH and called me an 'adult child') wouldn't have liked this wedding ring, but my current fiancé (the young woman that I hired last year to work at my firm who complimented my Ventus t-shirt) will really like it!

There’s a multitude of factors that led to middling sales for XVI and Rebirth. A lot of it doesn’t have to do with the games themselves. I think both are better games than their predecessors (XV and VII Remake) despite those games selling more. But the divisive response to each of the former games caused a lot of people to not pick up their respective sequels. I won’t be surprised if we see a similar effect with KH4 due to KH3.

Now that they have a critical hit with Rebirth, they need to use it as the model for future games. I think an original FF story with a similar combat system, party elements, and world exploration would do well. And if they are consistent with that format, it will help reform that series identity and new players will come to them. As opposed to trying to chase the audience by pursuing more “trendy” game styles and ultimately lagging behind the rest of the industry.

Also, as I’ve said before, they need a new family friendly FF spin off franchise. They need to invest in younger players so they can age into the mainline games the way many of us did after playing KH as kids. A lot of us are growing out of the franchise or gaming in general due to other interests and priorities. If they don’t replace those people, they are just going to keep performing worse regardless of how good the games are.

If they do it, they need to stick to the classic FF mechanics (or an action-ATB system like Rebirth’s) and not push experimental gimmicks. Also, let it stand on its own rather than being a cameo fest. WoFF is a great game, but was too reliant on FF cameos and gimmicky combat to find its own footing as a franchise. An FF spin off in the style of something like Super Mario RPG would be perfect in my opinion. Make it a humorous adventure with a simple story and a charming cast of characters. Aim for the same spirit as Astro Bot that captures the feeling of pure fun.

If they can do these things, I think they’ll find a lot more long term success. But knowing SE, they’ll try to completely pivot in the wrong direction. I guess we’ll see what happens.

I have beaten so much ass using Sora online. I've even done it at a local arcade bar that had Smash set up. I yelled "I'm using the power of waking!", I shrieked it.

Needless to say, Sora's inclusion in Smash felt just as intense and exciting to me as a new KH game

I legitimately flipped my shit at that reveal. The first minute or so had me thinking it was going to be Dark Souls, from Dark Souls.
