This should've been posted sooner, but here's a good sum up of what Square's business model is:

Half of a percent. The entirety of their single player console game business. 16, Rebirth, KH on Steam which got to #3 on sales charts, and everything else they released collectively didn't even make up a full 1% of their profits.

Mobile meanwhile made uo 31%. We look at all if the titles they've discontinued and think it must be a failing business but it's literally 62xmore profitable than their AAA or AA games. Mobile is doing EXACTLY what's its suppose to: get in, milk the whales, get out. "End of Service" is part of the plan.

If you were in the president's chair, where you be directing the cuts? Not at mobile, that's for sure.

Exactly. I’ve made the point before, but a full priced console game would need to sell over 42 million copies to make what DQ Walk has made. The entire KH series hasn’t even sold that many copies. Missing Link could make 7% of what DQ Walk has made (in Japan alone) and match KH3’s sales.

I think the slop nature of Square's mobile outings would be more palatable in respect to Kingdom Hearts if Nomura wasn't hellbent on making them important to the extent that he does. If they created Kingdom Hearts: Monstro Mayhem and let me unlock bikinis for Aqua, speedos for Terra, and a Pinocchio costume for Riku, that'd all be in good fun and it wouldn't be sad when the game inevitable went EoS. It's the fact that Nomura is creatively pouring his whole ass into a mobile game that has shite combat and mechanics and is taking forever to come out, only to likely be taken down in a shorter span of time than the time we spent waiting for it. He is wasting his effort.

Also, you can't milk a franchise if it's dead. The Dragon Quest walking game is doing well because it's Dragon Quest. If Dragon Quest was a nothing series that no one cared about, it wouldn't make bank for SE.

I feel that even if SE is keeping their business afloat with mobile trash, they do still actually need to make good games to make creepy waifus ouf of later.

They’ve cancelled completed / almost completed games when they moved their leadership in new directions a couple of months ago. Missing-Link might have been on a very fine line between cancelled and not.
Oooh I forgot about that, my gut was telling me the FF8 and FF9 remakes were cancelled 🙃 the second one hurts more

EDIT: Isn't another, simpler solution to, idk, make less AAA titles? Every recent underperforming console game from Square has been a game that cost dolla to make, and maybe instead of axing all their A and AA games, they should have gone the other way around. I don't think graphical fidelity can be improved in any noticeable way anymore, and having cheaper, more frequent titles makes Square's brand more present and more profitable.

I know it's apples and oranges but I love how Sega still maintains an affordable price point for Sonic games, even though if ANY game was to have the RRP 69.99 price it'd be Sonic Frontiers. And a lot of those games were still profitable despite not being great. I'm not saying we want the downsides of Sonic games but there's definitely a better balance to strike.

Not to mention a AAA title is more subject to scrutiny in terms of graphics, animations, physics, etc. because it's AAA and cost a quadrillion dollars to make.

Reynatis looks like doo doo feces but no one's dunking on it the way they did, say, Star Wars Outlaws, because it's clear how much smaller in scope it is.

...in retrospect, we've probably been hard on SE for taking so long with ML.

This is the JP work culture we're dealing with here.

I can't believe the first look at the new Disney Council of Villains in Kingdom Hearts 4 dropped on Disney+ last night with no fanfare.

There's something so ghastly about the way they draw these characters. You can't slap an overbite on Gaston and call it "Simpsons style". There's also no novelty left?? "We're in bed with Disney, tee hee hee! Look, Sideshow Bob is hanging out with Disney villains!" girls this is the fifth time you've done this routine in a span of two years, find some shame please

They included Kaa but not Dr. Facilier? 😭
It's been rumored that Disney wants to avoid acknowledging Dr. Facilier because his character may be offensive to Hatian culture. I'm seeing more and more evidence of that...

I am mostly puzzled by the removal of KHUX and the fact it's still not up. Since it's been down for such a long time now, I think it's a good indicator that something is being done with that game. Whether it will merge with KHML on launch or be remade in some sort of capacity, I don't know. Or perhaps it really is just is permanently removed and Square just doesn't want it up anymore I guess.
