So in DDD we found out that once a nobody and the heartless of a person are both destroyed, the person that the nobody and heartless originally formed, comes back to life. In the same game we also see that that the old Master Xehanort came back to life, supposedly because Xemnas and Ansem SoD were destroyed in the past games.

So far so good, except Xemnas and Ansem SoD are not Master Xehanort's nobody and heartlesss.
They're Apprentice Xehanort's nobody & heartless, which is really just Xehanort's heart possessing Terra, so how come when the two were destroyed, they didn't come back as Apprentice Xehanort, but as just Xehanort. In fact, Xehanort didn't even have a body when Xemnas & Ansem were formed, as he discarded it in order to release his heart and possess Terra. Now it's possible that he did form a nobody during that process, but we haven't seen the nobody of an ugly old man running around in the series so I'm assuming that didn't happen. (he probably could have caused way more damage in 10+ years than Xemnas ever did anyway)

What also could have happened is that when Xemnas & Ansem were destroyed, Terra and Xehanort reformed as their own separate people, however unlikely that is, but in which case still begs the question: Where is Terra now?

More specifically, where are his body, heart and possibly soul at this point in time; is he a complete person again, is he somehow trapped inside Xehanort or something else entirely?

I would love to hear everyone's theories on this!

he's probably one of the darknesses in mind-controlled comatose state only to get his mind right thanks to friendship shenanigans in the big III.

I believe that Terra's body is his own again but it's in a state of sleep, kinda like Ven is. I think Terra's Lingering Will has to be reunited with his body to regain consciousness. Xehanort must be holding his body somewhere so he can't become one of the Guardians of Light.

Master Xehanort claims that Terra is still under control during his rant in DDD, but it seems that parts of him are kinda scattered about, like with the Lingering Will. But honestly with the separation of Apprentice Xehanort, who at the time harbored Terra weakened heart, I don't know man. I'm not even sure if he can be brought back at this point. I mean, it's been ten years.

But that's different though. We know where Ven and Aqua are. Ven is safe with Sora and Aqua is safe with... I don't know, Ansem? Anyway she's fine, but we've had NO communication with Terra for over 10 YEARS. Last we knew he was bonded with Apprentice Xehanort. Who went nuts and split into a Heartless and Nobody. We have no idea what that did to Terra. Even if he does come back, the fact that the only one he would have been able to talk to for over 10 years would be multiple forms of Xehanort, he may not end up being all there.

yeeeeeeeah no. kh is pretty big on strength of heart so there is literally no way it could just give up, especially with eraqus giving him a boost. for all we know, terra could have left and decided to stay and weaken xehanort.

ven is in an ever-changing labyrinth with his heart shattered, but he has sora's connected as an advantage. aqua is trapped in a hellish realm of demons for all eternity but a small handful of characters have been there and back and she has sora looking for her.

terra is probably the most accessible realistically but in KH, heart is what matters most. the good news is, riku is connected to both terra and xehanort so they could very much make a rescue however they need more people to fight xehanort, so the smart money's on saving his friends first.

Is it wrong for me to hope that Terra will barely show up in KHIII and the Lingering Will will do most of the action for him? Not that I have any grievances over Terra as a character nor the voice acting of Jason Dohring, but I find the concept of the Lingering Will to be utterly fascinating, and feel it has tons of potential as a storytelling device. We the players already know of Terra's past misgivings, but it's likely Sora will not get the full story right away. All the while, we have this sentient armor, unable to speak but nonetheless proving that actions speak much louder than words. Not only does it echo the "silent warrior" theme, almost like a disgraced rōnin warrior, wandering the worlds on a silent road to redemption.

i would love lingering will to follow them strictly for comedic value. charging NPCs in every world thinking they're xehanort

LW: [metallic sounds while striking baymax]
Baymax: you seem upset friend. [gives LW lolipop]

or believing that asshole from frozen voiced by alan tudyk to be xehanort but elsa freezes it before it can move

hades saying "love the new guy. look kid, you need a break, i need a new gladiator how about we-" before getting tackled by The Will while sora holds his allies back and lets it happen.
