Powerline: Would He Be a Stand Out in Kingdom Hearts 3?

It’s 2016, which means we are yet another year closer to Kingdom Hearts III! Being closer to the game doesn’t mean we are getting it anytime soon, sadly, so what better way to fill the void than with some heartfelt editorials? I'll be kicking things off with one of my own on a summon I desperately wish to see in Kingdom Hearts III.

Disney, Square Enix. We need to have a little heart to heart…maybe try and see things eye to eye if you know what I mean.

20 years ago, one of the most underrated Disney films hit theaters and charmed audiences with a certain kind of flair that could only be captured by the unique storytelling styles of the 80s and 90s. Disney’s A Goofy Movie tells the story of the father-son duo Goofy and Max Goof as they go on a cross-country road trip to bond, although things don’t go exactly the way either expected it to. Goofy fears he is losing his young teenage son Max following an elaborate prank where Max, with his friends PJ and Bobby, create a small concert during the last school assembly before summer vacation where Max performs while costumed as the hit pop singer Powerline in order to impress his crush Roxanne. This prank, while making Max a school celebrity and scoring him a date with Roxanne, lands him in major trouble which prompts Goofy to take Max on the same road trip his own father took him on when he was young in hopes that it will fix the tumultuous relationship they have.

Much of Goofy and Max's trip leads them into misadventures that only serve to create a larger rift between the klutzy father and embarrassed son, but they eventually come to understand each other and finally see things eye to eye. This film embodies the very heart of what every teenager and parent's relationship is often all about : misunderstandings, good intentions, a lot of yelling, and a lot of love. This is why the film struck such a strong cord with audiences back in 1995 and why even now it is well-remembered by the kids who grew up watching it.

Despite its successful run in the United States box office in 1995–making over $35 million dollars by time it reached its close–and spawning a direct-to-video sequel film, An Extremely Goofy movie in 2000 based on Goofy and Max's time in college, A Goofy Movie remains to be one of the many animated films that has been sidelined by Disney for the better part of the last two decades when it comes to merchandising and use of the characters from the movie. Fans remember the movie fondly, though, and there is even an official Facebook account for the film that is updated regularly with images from A Goofy Movie and blog posts the film is featured in on the Oh My Disney! blog. A Goofy Movie was briefly brought into the limelight last year in August for a special A Goofy Movie 20th Anniversary Reunion panel at D23 Expo 2015 where screenwriter Jymn Magon, Bill Farmer (Goofy), Jason Marsden (Max), Jim Cummings (Pete), Rob Paulsen (PJ), and Jenna Von Oy (Stacey) discussed the creative process behind the beloved film with an audience filled with adoring fans. Beyond that, though? Not much at all.

I’m not here to rant about what makes A Goofy Movie one of Disney’s more obscured yet utterly fantastic 90s films in its large roster, though.

Part of what made A Goofy Movie so iconic to Millennials was not just the comedic and heartwarming moments, nor the impressive cast that embodies everything people remember about the 80s and 90s, but because of A Goofy Movie’s biggest in-universe rockstar—Powerline. By blending the quirky fashion sense of Prince with the energetic dancing of Michael Jackson and Grammy Award nominee Tevin Campbell’s voice, a truly unforgettable character was created that stands out among the rest in A Goofy Movie despite Powerline's actual appearance only lasting the runtime of one musical number. In fact, Powerline is probably one of the characters people remember the most from A Goofy Movie due to the two most catchy and rhythmic songs he sang in the film, "Stand Out" and "I 2 I (Eye to Eye)".

While Powerline is one of the more recognizable characters from A Goofy Movie, he is not the first character people imagine when you ask them who they wish to see as a summon in in Kingdom Hearts III, and I can say with certainty that before last year, it hadn’t even crossed my mind except in brief passing. I only started reconsidering it when I started thinking about how fun it would be to see Goofy break out into the Perfect Cast as a special attack of his following my weekend at D23 Expo 2015, then it lead to me imagining Sora and Donald joining in to make it a kind of trinity attack, which then made me start humming "I 2 I" because of course that was the only natural course of my thought since Goofy does do the Perfect Cast as a dance move during Powerline's big song in A Goofy Movie. It didn't take much for my oh-so-brilliant thought to finally evolve to "What if Sora was dancing with Powerline and the power of magical music and dancing wrecked all of Sora's enemies?"

It's not like the lyrics to "I 2 I" aren't already about the power of "listen[ing] to each other's heart" to find love and understanding in another, which crosses over perfectly with the themes of friendship and hearts in Kingdom Hearts. (See how great I'm making my case?)

Now, before people start freaking out over a potential “musical” summon with "musical" attacks, it is a good idea to remember Stitch in Kingdom Hearts II who would strum out magical attack on a ukelele as Sora improvised by making his Keyblade an air-guitar, Jack Skellington whose limit "Applause, Applause" was a suave and spooktastic dance with Sora, and Necho Cat in Kingdom Hearts 3D [Dream Drop Distance] who danced with Sora to a rhythm only a six-footed cat could dance to in order to damage enemies. While each of the above combat partner had a music-themed attack to them, there was very little of what people typically fear when it comes to Kingdom Hearts in general: rhythm mini-games. Soured by Atlantica in KHII and Ice Cream Beat in Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, I'm certain we all want to see KHIII avoid ever having anything resembling a rhythm game.

For Powerline, I was imagining something a bit more elegant (and completely unrelated to a rhythm game) with your regular combat imput commands. If character summons work in a similar fashion to how they did in KHII, when summoned and left passive Powerline would do a few dance moves and sing to debuff and put status ailments on enemies or give buffs to Sora like a Bard or Dancer from Final Fantasy; when summoned and made active, he and Sora would dance to a short edit of "I 2 I" and hit enemies with a mix of magical and physical attacks, complete with Powerline's backup dancers along with Goofy and Donald for the big finale attack.

Of course, this is just one idea since nobody really knows how summons will work in KHIII at the moment, but it is always fun to imagine the possibilites!

Much of the appeal in Kingdom Hearts has always come from the nostalgic feeling of seeing beloved Disney films being given new life with new or altered storylines and seeing Sora, Donald, and Goofy interact with the characters of these films, and I have always wondered why A Goofy Movie couldn't also be one of those films that gets recognition by the series? Obviously a world based on the film is nigh impossible considering the backstory of the Goofy in Kingdom Hearts, and everybody asks to see Max in the series anyways, so why not go for the next best thing that nobody would ever expect?

(But mainly I just want to see parts of "I 2 I" to make it into KHIII. I'm selfish. I'm sorry.)

Do you want to see Powerline in KHIII? Let us know in the comment section on our forums, and don't be afraid to tell us what summons you want to see in KHIII!

It's an editorial, specifically an opinion piece. I'm looking for discussion, not blind agreement or disagreement. Also:

Probably........um......let's see.....Baymax from Big Hero 6. Seeing how BH6 will be in KH3, it seems like a dumb decision not to.(Really nervous)

Holy heck, I-I remember this movie! Used to saw commercial of it whit the scene were Max and Goofy are fishing in the woods. I have probably only seen this once, but I remember enjoying it. Man, back then the dubbing was so good.
But yes, ahem... sorry, got some nostalgia on my eye.

I would love to see I 2 I in KHIII. Like you said a an summon with music and dancing integrated into it has been already done and the potential connection it could have with the FF jobs/classes is an interesting idea. And honestly, I think many people would just love to see Sora, Donald and Goofy do dance moves with Powerline. :D I certainly would. Anything relating to Max would also be interesting.

Maybe the summons could be leveled up in a unique way? The more levels it gets, the better SDG dance with Powerline, gives more and better buffs and etc...?

(Is that Tokyo Ghoul JAIL I see in you`r trophy card Master? o_o )

You might be interested in watching the panel I have linked in the editorial then. They talk about the dubbing process and man it was crazy. They were going to have Bill Farmer talk with his normal voice and recorded the entire film that way before they had him come back and redub the entire thing with his Goofy voice!

The dub was absolutely fantastic! Just another bit of proof on of how great Disney is at vocal direction.

(I really want Max the most in the game tbh)

A level-up system where more buffs/debuffs are added would be really interesting. Summons in KH2 kind of started out one way and stayed the same except for Genie. Seeing them have a growth system that actually matters would make them worth using more often.

About that Tokyo Ghoul JAIL game, you can buy a JP copy of it on Play Asia.
Also, I'm not......really invested in Disney stuff most of the time. I literally play the KH games with very little knowledge of the Disney films( I feel like a monster for that)

Yes, immediately. I'm also calling on people to come to Burbank in this awful rain and hold signs with Powerline on them in front of WDAS to show how serious we really are.

I really hope not. KH3 needs to appeal to everybody, and a huge number of the audience for the games are in their late teens to early/mid twenties. WE MATTER ;~; I demand the things that made me laugh as a kid.

KH3 needs it. It really does. It doesn't matter what it is, but as long as it is something fun and can be remembered fondly by everybody.

Anyway Powerline as a summon is a odd but interesting idea for a summon. If only because I would like to see Xehanort or Isa`s reactions if Sora summons him during a cutscene. That`d be hilarious seeing Sora and Powerline doing the perfect cast while fighting them

From the older fans to younger fans, KH3 can't cater to just the whippersnappers out there and seat us old farts in a corner with empty plates.

Because what new worlds we've seen (granted it's only been two) have been from recent movies, I worry this'll be the case. But I do hope it isn't. Disney has such a plethora of great movies (and TV shows) that we the fans have grown up on that it'd be a darn shame for them to be simply ignored because they think it wouldn't appeal to the younger crowd.

Hey, Chicken Little made it in as a summon. Anything is possible.

I don't think we have to worry about KH3 only catering to the younger kids. I think Nomura once said something about this series not just being for children anymore. He's aware that most of the hardcore fans are adults now. If anything, I can see 'em going all-out with catering to 90's nostalgia.

Yeah, my worry is that they will be too awed by working with newer stuff that they won't try to look far for what people really liked in the past and would have a unique contribution to the series *coughGargoyescough* and settle with the most popular stuff.

I know they can be trusted because damn KH3D had Julius and the Three Musketeers, so anything is definitely within the realm of reason, but Big Hero 6 and Tangled as our first two announcements were a bit...jarring I suppose. Great choices and wonderful films, but something i don't want to be the trend.

Mm, but they were trying to promote the film before it released in Japan so...it had somewhat of a purpose. Powerline would just be about pure nostalgia and awesomeness <3

He did. I believe it was in a KH3D interview where he discussed how the series hasn't really been for kids for a long time. I think it is more that the game has universal appeal now.

*hopes for major 90s nostalgia* I mean, it is in right now. Look at all of the stuff that is getting revived!

That was the opposite of what I was imagining. I was thinking more of what a Bard or Dancer is like in Final Fantasy, which is primarily a support class. While being music-based, neither involve rhythm game things to input their spells and attacks. That is the better way to approach it rather than looking at it purely from a Disney way. (Also because Nomura said there wouldn't be anymore quicktime events in KH3)

Also, welcome to KHInsider!

I think he could work well as a summon. I think the summons can actually work well for introducing characters that are interesting, but their worlds may not be doable (like Dumbo and Bambi in KH1). Powerline could be in a long list of summons available in KH3. I'm hoping that KH3 can have several more summons than we're used to, even ones that are unlockable after the game is finished. Perhaps Powerline is a character at Disney Castle, and when you do a side-quest for him (and Max) you get Powerline as a summon?

I'd love to have Tik-Tok from 1985's "Return to Oz" show up as a summon, the way he spins and beats the Wheeler's with his lunch pail would be a fun attack...or maybe he could even be a party member in an Oz world.
I know it will never happen, even though Return to Oz was pretty popular in Japan (and 80's fantasy films are the best!)

Agreed.
My worry probably stems more from that Disney might be trying to push for more of the recent movies rather than SE being in awe of working with these newer titles. As you said, because of things like The Three Musketeers and Julius, of all things, appearing in DDD, that they can be trusted, but with Disney being involved again after such a long time I can't shake the feeling a couple not-so-good choices will occur because of that absence.

Oh there is a recording of the panel? Nice! Gotta watch it in the weekend when I have more time in my hands.

All the hilarious situations it could make. Seeing Sora`s face after he learns that Goofy has a son, that would be priceless. :D

Maybe the way Genie was done is one possible method? Genie uses the Forms to do different attacks, so maybe Powerline could be used similarly. Depending how you summon, Powerline could use buffs, attack with dance combo with SDG and etc... All of these would use a different song. Or to avoid repeating things, they go with something different.

Agreeing with you`r and Fudges point, it would be awesome if the KHIII would appeal also the the older fans of the series, by potentially introducing something relating to older Disney movies, as summons or etc... I am not too scared yet that all of the worlds in KHIII could be based on new movies, but... the nostalgia man, we need it.

In terms of summons, yea. Max wouldn't be too much different from his dad, just younger and more awkward sassiness.

He'd be great in the games if he had a side quest attached to him. I'd be overjoyed if he was a knight-in-training with a father-complex at Disney Castle with his friends. Max as a knight, PJ as a mage (who is also a great techie), and Bobby who nobody really knows what he is training for...

At least the music would be better but just visiting that world would be great and bring back great memories.

Haha nobody ever wants Atlantica or rhythm-based anything ever again. If they had anything A Goofy Movie related, I doubt it'd involve musical numbers (bar Powerline and it wouldn't be playable because f that noise) and would be rooted a bit closer to what is going on in the KH universe.

EeL
I think he could work well as a summon. I think the summons can actually work well for introducing characters that are interesting, but their worlds may not be doable (like Dumbo and Bambi in KH1). Powerline could be in a long list of summons available in KH3. I'm hoping that KH3 can have several more summons than we're used to, even ones that are unlockable after the game is finished. Perhaps Powerline is a character at Disney Castle, and when you do a side-quest for him (and Max) you get Powerline as a summon?

That'd be a pretty cool idea!

chuman
but I'm wondering if theyre gonna do a max origin story, complete with his conception. maybe a minigame in 3

He's not on my list, taht's for sure.
BUT, I can't talk when it comes to wanting obscure characters as summons.

Oh the round robot guy! That'd be interesting to see, only because I didn't know the film was popular in Japan.

ultima-demi
Ha whenever there's a thread about what summons you want powerline was always my first choice.

Though the singing lady is there and it ends with a laser show and then it explodes.

Why did I not remember that ;A;

FudgemintGuardian

I really, really hope not. I can definitely see it because corporate Disney has always been very controlling when they put their sights on something, but they have given Nomura free-reign creatively for all of these years. It would suck to know they have suddenly put a leash on him to get a product they want and not a product that the dev team and fans want.

I want to believe in Yasue's statement about how Disney has given them full access to their roster, though. It gives a lot a hope that they are being given the freedom they want with a few natural limitations here and there.

chuman
thanks nomurobama .

Oh there is a recording of the panel? Nice! Gotta watch it in the weekend when I have more time in my hands.

Enjoy!

All the hilarious situations it could make. Seeing Sora`s face after he learns that Goofy has a son, that would be priceless. :D

YESSS.

OH! He could sing Stand Out for buffing/debuffing and I 2 I for attacks. That'd be pretty clever~

Yes, we really do. It's been the driving factor of KH for a long time that it would really suck if it only had recent films. I want to see stuff from the 60s, 70s, and 80s as well. Robin Hood, the Rescuers (maybe not as a world but featured) *coughGargoylescough* or The Three Caballeros from the 40s ;A;

It's not very medieval, though...It's got a computer and a space ship dock/garage, and the town square has a race track...and probably even more technology now. And skateboards lol. It's probably the least medieval medieval castle ever.

I didn't even know A Goofy Movie was released in cinemas though. With that being said, it was released in the 90's so why isn't it considered part of the DISNEY Renaissance? Because it used established DISNEY characters?

Anyway, because it was released in cinemas, that makes me believe that Powerline and Max do have chances of appearing. We could always see Max as a kid (like in Mickey's Once Upon A Christmas).

Because it was made by DisneyToon Studios. The film was planned to be a direct-to-video release but they made it a theatrical release instead. Since it is not a Walt Disney Animation Studios theatrical lineup, it isn't considered a Disney Renaissanse film.

Like BlackOsprey said, The Three Musketeers wasn't released in theaters and it made it into KH3D so anything is really on the table as long as it has caught the attention of the dev team or Nomura and Yasue.

I love kid!Max but idk…Goofy leaving home for almost two years and leaving his young son at home without knowing if his father would ever come back? At least if it is teen!Max or college!Max, it can be trained that he was old enough to take care of himself but Goofy would never leave his young son behind :c

max is one of xehanort's seeds, promised to see his father again once he has the power of kingdom hearts and reshapes the universe. but he realizes he was lied to when he sees his father, and they break the curse once they LOOK INTO EACH OTHER'S EYES

I think that we may run into some problems with this, particularly if we want a full world for A Goofy Movie, since it involves Pete, who, in Kingdom Hearts 3, is still a aligned with Maleficent. Maybe it'll work better for Kingdom Hearts 4, after Pete's inevitable redemption and after several years have passed in-universe.

I certainly don't want it to be its own world or be 100% based on the movie.

This is primarily about a summon.

If they made a story based on A Goofy Movie, it should only resemble the film as far as the characters and general idea behind it and not the actual plot and setting. It should fit with Disney Castle, for example Max being in training to be a Court Guard or Knight and having issues with his dad (either thinking he is a goof who ruins everything and doesn't get how his dad is considered a hero and ever became Captain, or have a problem with his dad being gone for almost 2 years or a mix of both)

Pete could have still had a kid back before he was banished so PJ could easily still exist if they want to fit him in.

Great idea, I love the more obscure characters. Even tho I have major problems with Dream Drop Distance, it had one of the most diverse and unique line ups of Disney related content in the series, so I'm hoping that carries over into 3.

All I'm saying tho is if they abandon older Disney films I will be incredibly disappointed. Black Cauldron needs to be in Kingdom Hearts, its perfect for it.

i agree, disney needs to delve into their older films, especially the 80s-90s range to cater to their primary audience. however, i get this weird feeling that with both new confirmed worlds being from new movies they may be aiming for a younger target crows.

I was thinking that as well, but two of the worlds from KH1 were also very new at the time. Hercules and Tarzan were relatively new films, especially Tarzan. So far the 3 confirmed worlds for KH3 so far are Tangled and Big Hero 6, I'd say in relation to the first game, the times between the films and games release are pretty accurate. Other than those worlds there's nothing that suggest they're going for a younger audience with this game. I imagine Frozen is probably going to be included, but that's most likely due to massive popularity. Hercules at this point is irrelevant to Disney but yet its one of the most heavily marketed worlds for the game so far. I feel the line up for worlds could easily be diverse without effecting the marketing. You have 3 newer films (Tangled, Big Hero 6, Frozen), 3 classic films (The Jungle Book, Robin Hood, The Black Cauldron), a couple returning films (Hercules, Winnie The Pooh) and a couple Pixar films (Toy Story, Monster Inc.) and you have a solid lineup that appeals to everybody.

I've been waiting so long for them to put more of the Goofy Movie and Goof Troop characters in Kingdom Hearts but it never happened. Because they have invested a lot of time and energy into the series and have grown disillusioned with where it all goes but since KH3 is the end of a saga it will likely provide them enough closure to deem it worthy to leave the series on that note.

After investing like ten years of your life into something, you tend to want to end it on an actual ending and not mid-sentence, regardless of how disillusioned you are. But you should ask them. I'm not really one of them exactly.

It's due to having put the time into the series that makes people want to complete it. KH3 is the end of a saga so people can exit the series without having to think about what happens next because (we hope) all of the answers they had will be answered.

Some people don't like to cling to the past, and for many Kingdom Hearts is something they once loved in the past but now don't feel the same level of passion as they once did. By playing KH3, they can have closure and essentially put a close to a chapter in their lives.

I used to feel this way, but now it is more a matter of me wanting to become a more casual fan after the saga is over rather than being on the forums seeing all of the new information as it comes and theorizing. It's fun to imagine the possibilities, but it isn't fun when you have made a bunch of guesses and then go into a KH game essentially with the entire plot deconstructed and analyzed and are only waiting for your theories to be proven right or wrong.

Theres so many ways to answer this from several point of views from fans. Honestly speaking, if you played a lot of the original games prior to their remastered ports, you probably spent A LOT OF MONEY depending. Most of the games themselves were stretched across different platforms...The PS2, GameboyAdvance, PSP, Nintendo DS, and Nintendo 3DS. If you didn't have a friend or a family member and were avid enough to avoid spoilers before personal experience, you bit the bullet on expenses. I am one of the people (Granted I lucked out, having a family member that owned a 3DS, because I refused to buy one when DDD released, didn't stop me from buying the game though, because I am a collector.).

Expense has probably been a factor outside of actually experiencing the games themselves. If you played Re:Coded on the DS, you'll understand what I'm talking about...-shudders-.
