Wow, it’s been a lot longer than I’d like to admit since the second part of this triad of editorials.  Just about two months.  It happens.  And now after that dramatic wait we get into the dramatic finale to the epic trilogy.  In the beginning, I talked about how I fell in love with the Kingdom Hearts series.  In the gripping sequel I explained how Kingdom Hearts and I ended our lovely affair.  And now, in this final piece, I’ll reveal the ultimate question: Can Kingdom Hearts and I rekindle our flames of passion and fall in love once more, or was the fallout too damaging to our young love?  FIND OUT NOW.

Let’s step back in time. Over a decade, back to the year 2002. I, like many of us, was in that awkward phase between child and teenager. Young, imaginative, naïve, and very easily influenced. I would imagine I was watching a television channel meant for kids back then, Nick or Cartoon Network, and this commercial catches my eye:

Editor’s note: I should clarify my definition of next generation hardware. This refers to the line of hardware for which the Kingdom Hearts series has not yet had a chance to appear on: the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U. Of course, much of what is discussed in this article can be applied to any future hardware releases as well.

It is widely believed that, eventually, Kingdom Hearts will have to make the transition to the next generation of hardware. No, not an HD port, but a game built from the ground up from far more powerful machine. Certainly, that game will be Kingdom Hearts 3. The question remains however, is there any inherent benefit to this series being on better hardware, is it even needed?

With just a few months left until the Japanese release of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix and the expectation of a short localization time, my hype as a fan of the Kingdom Hearts series is at an all-time high. I have not felt this was in a very long time. While it is indeed true that I have played all these games before, some multiple times even, this all in one package, wrapped in HD goodness, might just be the game that reels me back into the series.

In my last editorial, I covered how I fell in love with Kingdom Hearts. In the Golden Days, the gameplay was simple and yet it felt solid and challenging when it needed to be. The bosses and enemies were creative and yet not over-the-top; in fact, in some cases, less was actually more when it came to their design. The atmosphere was an excellent blend of Disney and Square Enix characteristics, and I never felt too flooded from one side over the other (at least, in the first game), and even when the story had its shortcomings (which is often), I was so enveloped in the universe that I rarely thought about the negatives. The Kingdom Hearts universe exclusive characters were memorable enough to still care about, the new and unique take on the Disney characters was excellent, and the cameos by fan-favorite Square characters was entertaining for fans of the company.  So much was done right with the first game, which is surprising considering no one would expect a game that mixes something Square with something Disney to be a hit. But it was…at least, for a while.

It's hard to believe it's been so long already since we caught that first glimpse of what's probably the most adorable thing in the KINGDOM HEARTS universe. September 12th, 2011, that day was, when the Nintendo 3DS Conference took place just before the Tokyo Game Show. Who wants to volunteer and cast aside their bodies to travel back in time to see those events unfold again?

Players newly introduced to the KINGDOM HEARTS series are most likely to hear about an unspeakable evil from the moment they step into the community. Something so vile and unpleasant that it sends fans running off to the nearest PSP or 3DS to cleanse themselves, and that is the one, the only KINGDOM HEARTS CHAIN OF MEMORIES card-based battle system.
