Review: Funko/Gamestop Kingdom Hearts Mystery Box

It seems like only yesterday we were reviewing the first wave of Kingdom Hearts Funko POPs, and now we're pleased to see that Funko has expanded their line of POPs and Mystery Minis in the Kingdom Hearts series with releases staggered throughout the rest of the year.
Some of the most recent GameStop-exclusive Funko POPs can be found in the Kingdom Hearts Mystery Box. The box includes a 3-pack POP set of Sora, Donald, and Goofy POPs in their Tron-inspired Space Paranoids outfits - purchasers have a 1-in-4 chance of receiving a rare glow-in-the-dark chase variant.  The box also includes two Mystery Mini blind bags - with the chance of getting exclusive Kingdom Hearts 2 Sora, KH2 Riku, KH2 Kairi, or Shadow Heartless Mystery Minis.

The box itself is pretty sturdy and takes up a lot of space. For those who don't like to waste packing, I've seen a trend lately of people taking these boxes and mounting them to create shelves, which may be a crafty way of sorting these while having its contents on display. For such a big box, it does seem to be packed a little oddly, but for the price you can't beat what you're getting.

My box contained a normal version of the POP box set. The POPs themselves are absolutely adorable. It's worth mentioning that Funko POPs aren't for everybody, they're very stylized and may be a turn-off for collectors who want more on-model representation of KH characters, but for people who love POPs - these are delightful new additions. Funko POPs do have a reputation for sloppy painting and imperfections on the molds but your mileage may vary.

My set had odd textured splotches on Sora's face and the back of Goofy's head, though whether this is a one-time error or something wrong with all the POPs, I'm not sure.  I should also mention that while writing this article I dropped the POP box face-first on the floor and it punctured the plastic on the front, so handle with care because it's not super durable.

As for the Mystery Minis, my box came with the Shadow and Riku. For those unimpressed with the POP style, you may find the Mystery Mini line more to your liking. The Myster Minis are closer to how the characters appear in game. The figures all seem very, very cute - but as for the review I can only really comment on the Shadow and Riku. Riku's molded great, with attention to detail throughout his clothes and his pose.  However, my favorite part of the collection is the Shadow Heartless; a very cute figure to begin with, but its glow-in-the-dark eyes make it the best item.

Overall, I'm pretty pleased with the Mystery Box. Priced at $29.99, the Mystery Box is roughly the price of three individual Funko POPs but with the added bonus of two exclusive Mystery Minis, making this collection a bargain. Fans of the series have been begging for more merchandise featuring the original Kingdom Hearts characters, I'd say it's pretty great that Funko is rising to meet the demand.

You can purchase the Kingdom Hearts Funko Mystery Box at your local Gamestop now, or online.
