Since December 2014, Disney Interactive staff have been publicly addressing the possibility of adding Kingdom Hearts content to Disney Infinity, but it's always been just that; a possibility. No matter how successful the series has been, or how highly demanded an upcoming title is, the chance of a character from Kingdom Hearts appearing in Disney Infinity was never more likely than a character from any other property.
Still, fans persisted, utilizing the Twitter hashtag #KHinDisneyInfinity to show their support. Later on, Disney announced the Player Pick 2015, in which fans could vote between 20 pre-selected characters and even suggest any character not on the list to join Disney Infinity 3.0. Needless to say, fans jumped at the opportunity, sending in massive votes for Sora.
However, although Sora himself was not selected to join the Disney Infinity roster, his Keyblade will be the Ultimate Unlock in Disney Infinity 3.0! Not only that, but 5000 lucky guests at D23 will go home with an exclusive costume change power disc for Kingdom Hearts 2 Mickey!
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Vice President of Production, John Vignocchi revealed that this collaboration has been in the works for about 8 months, involving a lot of back and forth with Square Enix. Because Kingdom Hearts is one of the most highly requested properties for Disney Infinity, he wanted to make sure that they are respectful to the brand. For example, all of the animations for Mickey in his Kingdom Hearts 2 outfit are taken directly from Kingdom Hearts!
Vignocchi hopes that this will lead to the addition of more Kingdom Hearts characters in Disney Infinity.

This is pretty exciting to me, though, and I do think it was a nice gesture on Disney Interactive's part. But here's hoping there will be more, real KH stuff in Disney Infinity in the future:)

Doesn't make me interested at all in buying DI3.0, but does make me interested for 4.0 if it means they're adding in actual KH figures.

The exclusive costume is one reason why I despise Infinity, and not even every attendee at D23 gets one. What's wrong with those developers?
This game is just an elaborate scam to get money from those people, not to make them happy in any way. Way to go Disney.

Well, it's something. We all kinda knew the Ultimate Unlock would be the Keyblade, but the KHII Mickey costume was unexpected (little annoyed it's exclusive but whatever.) So I guess I'm not disappointed, and even though it's small, now that KH is in I'm positive we'll be seeing more of it in the future.
This doesn't make me want to buy Disney Infinity, but when KH figures happen I will sure as hell buy them!

Exactly lets keep the pressure on. Comment on all their social medias, share links and all that jazz. When they see the overwhelming support they'll have the assurance to bring these characters in. For all we know this Ultimate Unlock is foreshadowing what's to come in 4.0 since the old ones hinted at Star Wars.

I must say, while having all 5000 figures to unlock the keyblade is not only ridiculous but debt-inducing, I'm kind of flattered that Disney considers the be-all, end-all gift, the gift you get for being the most dedicated of all Disney Infinity players (with a wallet to boot), the keyblade. It's the equivalent of the gold standard of games, the prize that clearly separates the diehard from the not, and while I have no intention of getting any figures (but I am getting that power disc, even if I do not have Disney Infinity lol), it's nice that Disney views Kingdom Hearts so highly.

lol That's another way to look at it but I never thought Kingdom Hearts was a hobby that made people spend mass amounts of money. I mean, I shell out a decent amount to own most of the official merchandise, and on the whole, there hasn't ever been a really expensive Kingdom Hearts LE item (non-auction) that showed that Kingdom Hearts' fanbase had money so I don't see it being that. I can understand Star Wars with the light saber in Disney Infinity 2.0 since Star Wars has had many really expensive collectibles, Kingdom Hearts has never had that. Especially when you realize just how much money you need for 5000 figures ($13 a figure).
P.S. I know it's not ideal, but if anyone is absolutely dying for the KH2 Mickey Power Disc, I have a few pending after I spammed the internet in search of one for cheaper than eBay prices, so let me know if you're looking for one. Warning, they are NOT cheap, but better than the laugh-worthy $200+ pricetags on eBay.

When I mentioned this, my friend who plays Dota all the time said that people pay thousands of dollars for in game skins in Dota sometimes if they are one of a kind or collectible ones or whatever. Which sounds horrendous yeah...
I heard word from people who know Disney Infinity better than I that the unlocks are just for that games figures? Like getting all the 1.0 still gets you the lightsaber and 2.0 is the landspeeder. So that may mean we only need all the 3.0 figures to get the Keyblade, which is honestly better...tbh the only people I haven't wanted so far are the Rebels characters and well the people the announced today a bit but we have seen barely anything for The Good Dinosaur or Zootopia so its hard to be excited about them yet.

Simply because it's rare. If it's rare, it becomes more precious. I know of people who literally just like the feeling of having rare stuff, not because of the item itself, but because "so few people have it and I'm one of the lucky few".
Still, we're talking about a digital costume in a videogame which has no effect on the game itself whatsoever, other than to be fanservice to KH fans. Rare or not, that's barely worth the usual $1.99 or so cost of DLC costumes for fighting games.

Yeah I don't think it's fair to judge what people will pay for things. If people are willing to shell that much out for it, power to them (not power to the people scalping though). Perhaps it's because I'm one of them, I will admit, I paid a hefty price for mine (not 3-digits, thankfully not near that much) and since I have no plans of even getting Disney Infinity, one can say I just paid that price for a piece of plastic with a Mickey image and the KH symbol on it. For me though, it's the meaning of having the first piece of Kingdom Hearts inclusion in Disney Infinity and I'm gonna shelf that thing mint forever cause I love the idea of that :D

Yup, I'm one of those people too. Buy stuff for its intrinsic meaning to you, but have no intentions of ever doing anything with it, so you essentially spend what most consider ridiculous money to have a little trinket sit in in its package on a shelf and people say you're wasting money, and I see why they think so, but they don't understand the feels attached to getting these kinds of things.
I'm not getting that Disney Infinity thing, but the scenario of me spending a large amount of money on something I intend to do nothing with except occasionally hold/stare at it has definitely happened multiple times before.

Updated the OP with some info from ComicBook.com, who interviewed VP of Production, John Vignocchi. Here's the original quote from their article:

Kingdom Hearts is one of the most requested properties for Disney Infinity, and they wanted to deliver, and planned out for quite awhile. "Everyone keeps asking me about Kingdom Hearts. I've been alluding to a passion project that I've been working on for some time, and that's what this is. We have had this planned out for about 8 months, with a lot of back and forth with our partners at Square-Enix," Vignocchi said, meaning they've been planning this for about 6 months prior to really getting questions about the products having a merger of sorts. "A lot of people are confused about who exactly owns Kingdom Hearts, but it's Disney - it's developed in partnership with Square-Enix." When he approached those developers, he made sure to make this content that was "respectful to the brand." The hope? Well, of course it's to do more with the two. "Hopefully this leads to us doing more. We've had a lot of fun doing it, and I love Kingdom Hearts, so that's the goal." |

They may not release this particular disc but Mickey's got more than 1 KH outfit (including most likely a new 1 in KH3) so a new King Mickey figure with a different outfit & KKD/Starseeker keyblade is certainly possible in the future.
EDIT: Based on my experiences with the past ultimate unlocks, it may only require the 3.0 figures specifically to unlock. gathering the 1.0 & 2.0 figures would only be needed to re-unlock their respective year's UU.

Random triva: Aside from the GBA CoM on a Gamecube's Game Boy Player, DI 3.0 Wii U version marks the 1st presence of KH anything on a Nintendo home console.

Although it certainly is great to see more recognition by Disney for the KH brand, this doesn't merit starting an investment in DI for me personally. Perhaps if there is a sizable KH cast in the future, but for now it's a novelty I can do without.

They used to have Sora, Donald, and Goofy in the parks back in 2002-3. The costumes are still in the costume storage room, too.

I'm thinking that all the KH-related stuff outside of the games is mostly Disney's domain. Non-video game merchandise that I've been able to find usually has a big ol' DISNEY printed on it somewhere. SE is usually found in the Kingdom Hearts logo on something like the packaging.
Can't say that I'm surprised, though. Disney owns pretty much everything now, so it's only natural that a video game that actually has a lot of classic Disney material should be Disney property, including the Keyblades, spiky-haired heroes, evil creeps in coats and everything else Square Enix invented.

Sora and other original characters belong to Disney. Case and point V Cast.

Square developed it because they have a licensing deal with Disney. The game, without the original aspects, is still mostly Disney. There's no way Disney wouldn't walk away with the entire IP. Besides, Disney approached Square to do it. In a lot of ways, this is a giant friendly commission.

Disney owns the entire franchise, including all original aspects (Sora, Xehanort, etc are all Disney characters for example). However they clearly have a good working relationship with each other that neither party wants to upset which is why they would work with S-E on something like this, but technically, Disney can do whatever they want with the IP.

Eh, from what I've heard, there are several different accounts on how the earliest stage of KH came to be. Some involve an elevator, others include both Disney and SE staff, some have Nomura overhearing a conversation about Mickey Mouse... and I don't know which one actually happened.
And if Disney World wants to raise KH awareness, the best thing they can do... is sell sea-salt ice cream. Okay, maybe not the "best," but it would make me an incredibly happy fan.

It was likely part of their deal. Disney owns the rights to the IP, but Square-Enix was in charge of merchandise and stuff.

When this was explained during the 2.5 filming event, they told us that while Disney owns the IP, Square Enix handles most merchandising as it is laid out in their wonky contract. Disney does have them too, though, which is why we have lovely Hot Topic merchandise.
No, the idea for Kingdom Hearts didn't even exist when Hashimoto and the Disney exec entered the elevator and said they should make a game. It only came into being when Nomura volunteered himself for the project because he heard Hashimoto and I believe Sakaguchi talking about how Disney came to them about actually doing the project and trying to decide what character to use.

Hopefully Disney's newfound involvement in the Kingdom Hearts series means crossovers into their shows, specially Gravity Falls because who doesn't want to see a Keyblade in the Mystery Shack.

They need to just do a regular cast member outfit ala cosplay rather than a super exaggerated costume with a head. Spiky wig, no felt and hard plastic. It'd be great for Sora.

That's one of the popular theories with DISNEY/PIXAR films. It would be cool to have a small cameo of Sora, Donald, and Goofy in Big HERO 7 as just a picture in the background.

That's one of the popular theories with DISNEY/PIXAR films. It would be cool to have a small cameo of Sora, Donald, and Goofy in Big HERO 7 as just a picture in the background.

Yeesh, that thing is exactly why I'm okay with KH characters staying out of the theme park. That just looks... eugh. There has got to be better ways to raise awareness than THAT. (Start selling sea-salt ice cream already, dammit!)

Tokyo Disney Sea sells sea salt ice cream, which is where Nomura tasted it. It is a specialty there.
Disneyland in Japan doesn't sell it, though, but that park isn't ran by Disney anyways. It is just licensed out by Disney for use by another company. Tokyo Disney Sea is an officially Disney-ran park, though.

There are specific requirements to become a Disney Princess. Just because the character is royalty in their canon doesn't automatically make them a candidate. The candidate has to be famous and make bank for Disney, enough to produce merchandise.

Not many people know about Kairi outside of the KH fan base. I think if they sold Sea Salt ice cream bars with the KH3 logo all over it, that would raise awareness even more. Each sea salt ice cream would come with a small figurine of a KH original character, Donald, Goofy, Maleficent, Pete or Mickey.

i've known it was real before kh for years
we had an ice cream maker so we got the ingredients for it and my family made fun of me until we ate it and everybody loved it
