The 'lack of NPC' lore confuses me a little. Since Xehanort is in Agrabah about 70-odd years before Sora, how does that work with the Aladdin lore (which KH1 adopted) where Genie had been trapped in the lamp for 200 years. Agrabah is one of the worlds that are slowly rebuilding from the Keyblade War, which we were led to believe happened a long time prior to Dark Road (surely more than 200 years?) so Genie wouldn't have had a master longer than 200 years so my guess, for Genie coming back into Agrabah from the darkness, it might have felt like no time had passed at all to him even though it had been centuries.
I'm no doubt mis-remembering details like if Genie had actually said it's been 200 years since he was out as it's been 3 years since I last played KH1 but I'm curious if this was an oversight or not. I know Genie said he's lucky to get out every century or two but I could swear there was a text bubble or something that specified 200 years.

Ah, all good. I thought you were questioning the 200 number. But you're right, Genie, being what he is, should be above the regular residents and should have been brought back earlier in a world's restoration, surely.
And I found the speech bubble. It's not that he was last out 200 years ago, just he last heard of keyholes 200 odd years ago.
Damn, the ending of this episode was dark and unexpected. It made sense because there had to have been an explanation as to why you don't see these characters walking around 75 years later (unless they're just far away and retired), but with all of those graves... What in the world happened, I wonder. Couldn't be a Keyblade War because that's what Xehanort wanted to accomplish in BBS, and Eraqus is sympathetic with him.
Hopefully the episodes are as long as this one, if not slightly longer if we're doing monthly updates just like UX. Hire some damn Flash animators, Square.

I mean to be fair, it's the first episode of how many we might be getting. If they're going through the trouble of explaining why time moves differently in different worlds (we sorta came to this conclusion due to DDD) and why people wouldn't be there, maybe they'll touch on that too. Cause he and King Triton clearly know more about the Keyblade and all that comes with them more than they touched on in KH1. In fact, I'd wager all of the Gods in Olympus would also know too.

The way they talk about people being restored, I think the worlds are returning to how they were before the Keyblade War, just separated from each other. Anyone who was alive in these worlds will be brought back where they left off with no recollection of the worlds ever being destroyed. So characters like Genie most likely existed before the Keyblade War and eventually they’ll reappear and time will start moving forward for them again.
Here is how I took it chaser, the world is like a video game.
For example Master Xehanort in his universe is an 80 year old man and has lived a life of 80 years. But in reality that's all false, he's a video game character he was only created 10 years ago and is only 10 years old, his memories just make him think he lived 80 years. So it seems that roughly 80 years ago the worlds were still being in the process of recompleted but once its finished all those recreated people like Aladdin will have the memories of their whole life, believing themselves to be say 40 or 60 or 20 or whatever even though they may have only been recreated recently.
Which brings a much bigger question, what is recreating the worlds in the first place and how long has this been going on? Are these worlds being recreated from just the the war that destroyed the world in UX? Or has this happened again and again and again? Is that's why Luxu and the others of their age didn't know about the keyblade war that MoM fought in? Is the world in some kind of endless loop where its destroyed and recreated again and again? If that's true does Xehanort know that?
Like is the state of the world that it will always be destroyed but then some I dunno cosmic supercomputer recreates the missing worlds from a blueprint of sorts like the BoP. Is that's what is in the box, the system that recreates the world unable to stop the oblivion but at least prevent it from being the total end...and is this system what Xehanort was ultimately trying to free us from. To start the world over and free it from this ruined failed state that can only progress so far before it resets.
And if so is the recreation identical each time or is it like how every time we visit a different version of the same world the events always varies a bit. With each recreation new things are born, new people who weren't part of the previous cycle?

I thought the same thing and agree with all of this but at the same time I need Nomura to confirm it in canon because if he's going to be mucking around with lore like this, and often leaves this kind of lore outside of the games, then I'm going to remain skeptical that he thought of this prior to the episode releasing lol

It's best just to view the worlds like separate universes rather than literal singular worlds.

That said, wasn’t it established that they project the future worlds because the actual locations in the present were too far away to travel to and lacked the presence of Heartless? So the Disney locales could still have existed prior to the Keyblade War without causing the projected and data worlds to be redundant.

I think the only one that definitively exists is Wreck It Ralph's world. They say there are other worlds that are too far to reach, but they never seem to act like the Future Worlds are actual worlds existing in their time period. It's obviously just an excuse to reuse environments, characters, and locations from previous games in the series, but if they wanted the worlds to exist during that time, they could have just said they did and been done with it without the need for the whole data world confusion, or even just said that the data worlds are based on real worlds that exist.

Hmmm... I think in the cases we've seen so far, every world Sora's been to flows more or less about the same. The Realm of Darkness obviously doesn't have time flowing normally there for whatever reason, but Sora so far hasn't had to worry about going to say, Twilight Town a year ago and to the citizens there, he's been gone for 50 years. However, this actually may explain why Eraqus looks way younger than Xehanort does, despite being around the same age. But now that Dark Road has brought this into the lore, going forward, there may be instances in where time flows differently in different worlds and it's drastic enough for Sora to pick up on.
If Sora were to ever end up in a situation like that though, that's probably when the World Order thing kinda kicks in and Donald's magic would likely accommodate for the time passed since their last visit.
I wish somebody gotta port those amazing new characters to meshmod or custom models for XPS ( Xnalara Posing Studio) someday!
Thanks for uploading these! I've used only Bragi in the story missions thus far and the dialogue for him was exactly as it is in the videos with other party members. Replaying story missions with other party members to see different dialogue/scenes would've made the grind a bit less of a hassle, but it's more a relief since this way I know I'm not missing anything by not taking a specific character on a specific story mission.

The thing is, like you said, they wanted to reuse characters and stories from previous games. That’s why they had to come up with the projected/data worlds of the future. Whether or not we’ve seen them or had them acknowledged, there’s nothing that suggests the Disney worlds (or lands at that point in time) didn’t exist prior to the Keyblade War. We just don’t go to them because most of the Disney characters people want to see would not be born yet and SE wouldn’t have established stories to follow for that time period.

A bit surprising to see at least hints of Xehanort being capable of caring for others and feeling guilt. Not something the main series incarnation of him ever displayed.
I'm still not exactly feeling any big sympathy for him considering all the damage he has caused to other beloved characters without showing a hint of remorse for his actions, not even after his defeat in KH III, but I do admit the first story premise is shaping up to be interesting, also since they seem to address discrepancies such as Emblem Heartless being around yet again despite only getting invented (by Xehanort no less) in the future.

It's the red/white cloth-like stuff and the black bands that link the sleeves that make it different. Similar, but not exact.

The (main) story is literally the only part of it all that truly interests me. Since the Disney worlds are 99% just filler stuff I'll gladly ignore them.

In DR only the central visor is bigger and the arm "gauntlets" or whatever they are are more appropriately sized. On No Heart/Xemnas they look really ridiculous taking up almost the entire arm.

No it has to mean something. It’s too significant to merely stem from a random cool design and now that we know Xehanort shares a connection to player I wonder if Strelitzia may be involved. She could for all we know be the very first nobody to exist.

Great question. TAVs armor matches their keyblades pretty well, and the keyblade is apparently formed based off the users heart so maybe the armor could be considered an extension of the wielder/ their keyblade?

Which begs the question: from a narrative point of view, why was he spared? It could mean that he's a very important character, and if so, will he reappear in present day KH?
Cause he and King Triton clearly know more about the Keyblade and all that comes with them more than they touched on in KH1.
Xehanort being the wielder that had met with Triton would explain his attitude towards Keyblade Wielders in general. Other than that, he knew that Wielders were not to intervene in other worlds' affairs. I suspect that Masters from Scala would contact a world's highest authority in order to request permission to enter.

Then we're missing two upperclassmen, seeing as how there were six of them and we only see four flowers. I'm more inclined to believe that the graves are for the regular peers, and since Xehanort and Eraqus speak as if the matter of the upperclassmen is over, perhaps they either found them or they're dead. And perhaps what killed them is the same thing that killed the upperclassmen.
With how much of a contrast there seems to be between Xehanort's willingness to fight and Eraqus more runaway strategy, I feel like what killed the four apprentices is exactly what killed the upperclassmen and Xehanort wanted to avenge them, thus pushing everyone to confront it.
Also, if the Emblem Heartless are everywhere because of the Book of Prophecies been used to scatter them around, this pretty much means that the Book isn't inside the Black Box, thus suggesting that something else is in it (assuming the Box even "opens" in a traditional way and isn't some sort of device that turns into something else_.
Also, crazy theory, but what if the MoM is behind everything that is happening in order to nurture Xehanort into becoming the Seeker of Darkness and advancing the MoM's plans?
Too many...thoughts and questions. I can't put them all into words. So it seems like these are the real Disney worlds and not data projections from the book. The restoration of the worlds is quite interesting because I wonder if the Disney characters are their usual selves or if they are younger. And the different time thing is to be expected. So much lore is being dropped here. Thanks for the translations Sign and team.
The ending was dark. I wonder how they are going to tell the tale of what happened. I'm going to be anxious to continue this.

I really hope they don't do that. It was OK once, but if we have to keep guessing whom everyone really is it just takes away from the impact of those reveals.

Remember that DEATH is something that happens when a Nobody or Somebody kills a Somebody.

I don't think any of the modern wielders need it? It's very much a relic of its time, but if anyone were to get armor, then I feel like Riku would be the most likely since he's part of that legacy and tradition.

The traitor was a Foreteller thing. It sort of lived and died with them, and isn't really a factor in the current storyline.

Yeah I haven’t seen that brought up much. When I saw the scene the first time, it gave me the impression that something terrible occurred where wielders were killed en masse.
I think we're all forgetting the biggest and most obvious question here: When is literally anybody else going to get Keyblade armour in the main series?
Also, I don't recall, did the traitor specifically mention Foretellers and/or Union Leaders? Cause maybe this could be it? I doubt it but it's a theory.

Interesting start to the series. I'm actually alot more invested than I originally thought I'd be lol.
[spoiler] I'm thinking we're left to assume that the deceased are all the new characters but perhaps it's a mixture of lower and upper classmates.
I had an initial thought that maybe the somebodies of Demyx and Luxord were apart of the upper classmen who disappeared and maybe ended up in Verum Rex. However I remembered that Luxu is lingering about somewhere. He could be anyone at this point, such as a maintenance person or someone who just works at the school building, in order to watch over his keyblade. If that's the case, he would have mostly likely remembered seeing both Luxord and Demyx at some point. Unless their somebodies were really young and they just looked different as they aged.
As previously mentioned by user Eonstar, that is definitely a crapton of graves. There's something else going on here that we're not seeing. My memory is a little fuzzy, but there was some concept art of Scala posted here that had an abyss containing what resembled a throne beneath the city. Is there perhaps like a slumbering darkness somewhere that resulted in Scala being flooded/destroyed? Maybe keyblade wielders are being sent off to battle this thing to prevent it from being awakened? Or maybe they're being sent as sacrifices in order to awaken it? I'm probably reading into that too much but having that amount of graves raises some questions.

What if the graves belong to the Foretellers, minus Ava? For all we know, the story of the Lost Masters could only reference those that went along with the MoM's plan.

Luxu is also definitely present at Scala ad Caelum in some form to watch over Xehanort, and that is probably at least indirectly by the Master's orders. Part of their plans/MoM's plan has probably always been to find a Keyblade Master who is capable of becoming the Seeker of Darkness (so maybe he is Odin, as speculated by many; what better way to find a suitable Seeker than by watching over all of those students over a long period of time?)
Actually at the moment I feel like the MoM not being behind everything would be the bigger twist. I'm almost expecting some kind of Star Wars Palpatine-esque twist of the Master of Masters using some magical ability to create Xehanort, hah (to be clear this 99% won't be the case, but the storyline reminds me a lot of the dynamic between Palpatine and Anakin Skywalker).

Maybe you're right but I don't think it's impossible that Master Odin teaches the upper class of 7 as well. We know from the BBS reports that Xehanort was passed over for the role of 'Sucessor' which gave me the impression there was one master overseeing their school. I guess it's not definitive though so we'll see.

That reminds me, the DDD glossary states that the Successor is responsible for safekeeping the Land of Departure, something I hope they address in this entry. Is Odin currently responsible for LoD or someone else?

I'm thinking it's more likely that, like how Castle Oblivion was a transformed Land of Departure, Land of Departure could be a transformed Scala ad Caelum. A large building at the top of a giant mountain (a city-mountain in Scala's case) is the main feature that both share.
Edit: I've also had this pet theory for a couple years that Castle Oblivion's defense mechanism is powered by the Book of Prophecies. The only other times we've seen worlds recreated from memories are in Coded and the X mobile series. In coded and COM's case, it's world made from memories of the past, and in the X series, it's worlds made from memories of the future. If Scala is LOD is CO, it could explain everything.

Quite possible as well, but LoD has the Castle Oblivion defense mechanism. Unless Masters are taught how to change worlds, and it wouldn't surprise me, seeing as how Xemnas sorta created TWTNW.

I mean, the series is full of magic, so the actual size of the buildings don't necessarily mean that would be reflected in a transformed version of them. I also don't mean it's literally just Scala transformed into LOD (and Castle Oblivion was also significantly larger overall), but that the world itself could have been transformed into what LOD is now.
Plus just the entire aesthetic (large mountain with a white/gold themed palace at the top, surrounded by hundreds of other, similar mountains) is shared among both. The chains in LOD could also be a representation of its true nature being locked away to protect it.
And if Scala is the world that birthed all others, maybe it can birth new worlds too, which would explain why it's so important, and why Land of Departure has such an intense defense mechanism.

/ontopic I'm curious what event could have happened to Odin and crew. I mean, they're obviously gacha fanfic characters in the same vein as Fire Emblem Heroes' Norse themed characters, but they also are now part of the KH Character crew. Did they get time displaced? Outright killed (death is something we will absolutely see more of thanks to KH3)? Sent to other worldlines? Power of Waking themselves out of existence to save Xehanort and Eraqus?
I finally took my time to check out Dark Road after postponing for a while. I absolutely hate Xehanort and Eraqus so I really did not want to get into a game all about those two, but I love KH way too much to avoid it, so here I am with my first impressions and current thoughts.
1. The Xehanort from this game is.. quite a surprise. He's not like the clown that was YX from DDD/KH3, being more like a refined version of the one from the chess games in 3, which I like.. but I really did NOT want to like a version of Xehanort, at all.
2. I wasn't sure what to expect of the rest of the class, but seeing them in action pretty much answered my questions: they're just generic sideliners. Their designs are cool, but in a generic brand of way; they all look like player characters from X/UX. I only really made that connection on what irked me about them when I saw their armors and realized they're just modified versions of the union armors from the previous game. That coupled with the implication that they are all dead makes me worried about their roles at all, but since this is only the first chapter I'm gonna withhold from making further assumptions as all could change. Personality wise, none of them made a proper impression on this first chapter; I don't really remember them besides Bragi (?) being the smartass.
3. I'm REEEALLY interested in this whole class-perspective and how it seems like they are finally going to explain some aspects of the franchise that had always been left open to interpretation, like the flow of time in the worlds. I hope that wasn't a one time kind of thing and we can see more of that going forward.
4. I absolutely loved Scala ever since it was first revealed, but I love it even more now with the revelation of the abandoned lands and the implication that the world is quite big and no one really knows everything about it past the ocean. Out of all the hub worlds we've had in the franchise so far, it's easily my favorite one taking the spot from KH2's Radiant Garden. I love the imposing castle, the white marble aesthetic inspired by greece, the vast blue ocean and the ruins of forgotten lands. I hope we get to see a lot of it and that they go back to explore those abandoned parts.
5. I'm really invested in who Baldr might be and what fate is reserved to this character, as well as the upperclassmen. One of them is most likely going to be Luxu, but that still leaves us with 7 "new" characters to expand the mythos. While some of them are definitely going to be faces we already know, I hope we get more cool designs.

Just "marathon"-watched the translated vids. I'm just crossing my fingers they handle this better than Union X. As much as I like characters like Ephemer and Skuld, the way they have been handled in terms of focus was disappointing compared to what potential there is/was, same goes for poor Ven and Strelitzia.

Working the little bit I have been on translations and looking at the base dialogue and the way SENA's handled it, it's actually a really concise and competent translation for Dark Road. They take a lot of the Japanese awkwardness out of it.

While some decisions in UX are odd, a think a lot of the issues come from the really rough start (and inconsistency in Medal Effects caused by using multiple translators and the terminology being updated over time). Later stuff really isn't bad, just with a few decisions here and there that people don't like.
They probably went with lifeboat because it's not confirmed if that's a Proper KH Term or just a generic way to describe the machine based on its function, and if it is a proper term, they can always introduce a more proper name and refer to it by both once it becomes important.

Uh... what you're suggesting here is that they're translating blindly and didn't bother to consult the writers, people they have access to, about their intentions. People may have their gripes with the quality of localization work in this series but I doubt the translators would be so irresponsible as to do that.

Not necessarily translating blindly, but that Nomura's always bringing back terms that seemed like throwaway generic names but in fact are important to the lore, or there are terms that are mistranslated specifically because they sound like Proper Noun terminology but are just generic names. (Case in point: Sleeping Worlds being mistranslated as Realm of Sleep at one point in DDD because of the vague separation between a world and a World in JP kingdom hearts, basically screwing up fan theories for years)

Eh, not really. They work with the JP side, but they can't exactly ask for Nomura's input on every single line of the script, especially when he isn't fluent in English. And sometimes it's only afterwards that he decides he wants to incorporate something into later plot points since he prefers to make an overarching plan and fill out the details as he works on the games rather than meticulously planning every single plot point.

No one is proposing that they ask about every line, just for the few that they need more clarification on. And quite frankly if a translator actually feels the need to consult with someone about every single line, then that is a big cause for concern.
Disney has no involvement in the recording process for this series. SE uses the same team of staff to oversee voiceover for KH, FF and other games.
Disney lets SE handle the actual game-making decisions, up to and including translation and voice acting. They might be giving them money and their characters, but they leave game development to the developers.
SE's had some of the same translators working on KH since KH2. There is a limit to my disbelief in their ability to work on these game and deliver top-notch work. If freelance volunteer translators can take the time to do a little research into what they are translating, then it should not so hard for paid professionals to do the same thing.
They should be asking questions and seeking out clarification. They should be keeping an eye out for callbacks and doing research into previous scripts. They should be asking questions about "Special Attack Bonus" vs "Guilt".
And SEJP should be putting in the same effort to make sure their work is being represented well to their largest audience. KH has been a series full of translation errors and inconsistencies for forever. Why? Why does this keep happening?
DR is great. I am very happy with the quality of translation work they are doing, and I think it is because they had more time to work on it, and I hope this level of work continues into later episodes.
In regards to the voice acting, nah, I don't buy that either. How the heck do they have the same voice director from FF7R working on every single KH game since KH2 and KH sounds awkward and weird while FF7R sounds great? Bob Bucholtz has been doing this for SE for years. He's worked on tons of projects that sound way better than KH ever has.
