With the recent announcement of KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5 ReMIX- in western territories, the time has come for promotion to begin, and what better way to start it off than with a trailer? Originally featured at PAX East 2013 in Boston, Massachusetts, this trailer may seem familiar to those of you who've followed along since the title was originally announced at last year's Tokyo Game Show!
This North American launch trailer is exactly the same as the Jump Festa 2013 trailer, albeit with English text and voice acting. Gameplay remains in Japanese, though of course the game itself will be entirely in English.
Subtitles are available as Closed Captions.

NICE! sounds like they kept the same audio of young Haley for KH 1 Sora. Was worried they would get someone else to try and imitate the voice since they said they were re recording everything.
Well, wasn't this a pleasant surprise? Good to actually hear they are using the original voices for KH1 FM. Only thing that gets me is the Xion's inconsistent voice. I mean, first Alyson, then Hayden in DDD, and now Alyson again? Make up your mind, SE. Does not matter though, they both did a good job.

Lol I didn't say it was. I mean, at this point in time, it's safe to assume Lee won't be back again, so I just think it's odd that they managed to get Hayden for only one line in DDD, and not this game.

It was probably a contract thing for DDD. My guess would be Hayden's contract for the KH series says basically they have to hire her for a project every x number of years or she gets out of the contract, so it may have been a quick hire to make sure they still had her under contract when Kairi has a big role coming up in the future.
I'd say it's more likely that Hayden couldn't voice Xion because she's working on a television series right now. While she was easily able to get into the studio to record one or two lines for DDD and BBS, she was missing for Re:CoM because she was working on Heroes and I imagine that there were likely studio time conflicts.
I think it is more that she already did the DS version and they maybe maintained had high quality versions of that stuff so they had her just do the new stuff rather than re-record everything with Hayden.

I'm not sure. On the Japanese version, the delivery of lines in the old scenes sound nearly exactly the same.

Seriously, I was watching Cyberman65's playthrough of KH1.5 and I was HORRIFIED at how bad the Japanese voice acting was. It does not match up to the quality of the English dub. The biggest example so far is the Queen of Hearts. She sounds way too freakin' calm in the Japanese dub.

Doubt it. If the trailer still shows Japanese text during gameplay, I doubt that they'd have an English ready demo up.

I think it's mostly when you compare the trailers that the voice acting seems better in Japan. The trailers are made originally for the Japanese version of the games and so they take the lines that sound very well done in the Japanese versions and use them in the trailer. Unfortunately, if that scene is not as good in the English version (in this trailer, most notably Leon), it's still thrown into the English trailer instead of them opting out for different lines.

The English voices are technically the "original" as well. The original Final Mixes switched over to the English dub so that Japanese players would be able to experience that.
I'll admit, part of me was hoping for some redub in KHI, and Miss Panittiere in Days. However, I also can't see Xion without Stoner, so what can I do, eh? Not that any voice acting is bad. I'm just curious in wondering what it would have been like, whether good or bad.
I am excited. Still holding off on playing any of the games until this releases in the Fall.

I'm playing it right now in PCSX2 with Tales of Symphonia in Dolphin as well. But I will stop until I get HD cutscenes. You know, gameplay is better than scenes (because they were not rendered :()

That makes sense. I dunno about you, but I've always felt that the voice acting in the Japanese versions were... sub-par. Some of the voices don't fit (Goofy in particular sounds ridiculous), and those same voices are the ones I hear in basically every anime ever. Methinks Japan needs some VAriety.
Well the original game was released over 10 years ago. Perhaps for the younger VAs, this kickstarted their careers? Considering also everyone's popularity and talent, it's no surprise that we may hear them more commonly nowadays.

I don't want to speak too much about the voice acting, (might apt for an editorial about that) but here's my two cents.
The quality in Kingdom Hearts's English voice cast is GIGANTIC; soundalikes, celebrities, original voices like James Woods; it's just fucking huge. Especially in Kingdom Hearts 1 (which still may be David and Haley's best work) with the celebrities.
But it's inconsistent. KH2 fell apart in the voice acting department; voice switches, awkward phrasing, bad writing, and bad vocal direction. (Kairi was just not Kairi)
The Japan cast, while worse in my opinion (some of those japanese voices, I mean come on Hades) is consistent. Sora's voice still sounds the same. They still have their original voice cast.

The way I always pretty much saw it (minus a few characters here and there) are that the FF characters sound better in Japanese (because the English cast in KH2 was downright atrocious), the original KH characters I'm pretty ambivalent about since I don't mind them in either language, and the Disney cast is always better in English (since they were originally chosen for those roles and I think Disney does a PERFECT job in their casting offices).

I actually agree with this possible scenario because there was a English fandub of the original Japanese trailer that took the same lines in English and it sounded EXACTLY like the NA launch trailer, in others, pretty crappy.
I am actually most excited to play/watch 358/2 days. Its going to be awesome to just be able to watch the entire thing in one sitting in glorious HD. The Axel, Xion, and Roxas relationship during the game is one of my favorite moments in the series.

I think a big thing most people are ignoring when saying the japanese voices may be inferior is, the comparison is mostly made between the Disney characters...who are quintessentially american cultural creations. Obviously they are not going to sound as good in japanese, that is really just a given, especially when most of the Disney characters are voiced by their original actors, who are usually celebrities or voice actors with tons of experience, whereas Japan probably doesn't "understand" the characters as well and a lot of what made the characters work in the original language will simply be lost. So if you want to compare them it isn't going to stack up favorably 99% of the time, like when a japanese show is dubbed into english. Speaking of which....
Sora, Kairi, and Riku, and all the original characters are all pretty much japanese, so in some cases the voices fit just as well or better than the english VA's. The one I remember that really bothered me was Norio Wakamoto as Xemnas. He's an amazing seiyuu who's voiced a ton of iconic characters, he is pretty much THE villain voice in japan, especially hammy ones, which sounds good on paper, but in my opinion his voice is just way too deep a voice for Xemnas. It sounds wrong.

Thing is that it's not just the Disney characters. Even hearing SRK in Japanese from KH1 felt weird. They did not sound like they should at all. Granted, Aerith's voice was terrible in KH2 and Cid's was the generic cowboy stereotypical voice, but other than that I overall feel the English and Japanese voices for Final Fantasy characters are on par with each other.
In fact, I started playing Birth by Sleep again after a year and a half of not playing it. And I was surprised at how good some of the voice acting actually is because I remember the community mostly hating them during the earlier trailers. But then I started playing the Japanese copy and I truly felt that the English dub was much better.
And KH3D is the first Kingdom Hearts game since KH1 and COM that I have successfully managed to stay spoiler free until the American release. So I haven't heard any Japanese dub aside from the trailers. When I played KH3D, I thought it was the best vocal performance Kingdom Hearts has ever had. And then I saw some cutscenes in the Japanese dub and I'm like... "they're saying all of their lines the exact same way."
So if I'm to be totally honest, I personally much prefer the English dub over the Japanese dub in the games. I feel like when I'm listening to the Japanese dub that I'm just hearing the same recorded lines from the previous games. Not to try and sound offensive, but acting-wise it's like the actors have a template of different basic emotions and they just switch to said basic emotions depending on the scene. It's almost robotic to be honest. The only real reason I think there's such a big group who think otherwise is because the Japanese trailer are the first voices they hear and thus anything that sounds different they will label as bad.
But hey, that's just my opinion :P

Being Japanese does play a part on it, buuuut, I think for Sora, Kairi and Riku they have such ordinary voices that it really comes to the voice actors' acting skills, and how much the voice directing team understand it. And the people they chose for the English version aren't exactly experienced voice actors, and the Japanese Sora, Kairi, Riku trio...already have experience on their belt by the time KH started and they continued to work on their craft. ...and I think that's why they're so much better at the characters than their English counterparts. For the Disney voices, yeah, definitely, there's some really unusual voices that only sound good in certain languages (though again, it could actually be the person doing the voice is kind of off the mark somehow).
With that said personally, I think Norio Wakamoto's Xemnas rocks and so does Paul St Peter's.
As for my thoughts on the trailer...I dunno, I think Xion's acting is actually pretty good. She sounds a lot older than I remembered, though. I hope they redub her old lines. Jesse McCartney has gone a LONG way. He's really good now. Quinton Flynn's great, too. The scripting is a smidge awkward though.
I am so excited I can't even put it into words! The only thing better than this would be KH3, but I am just ecstatic that they've got another KH game at all! This is my absolutely favorite game series of all time and I will take ANYTHING KH has to offer! SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Yeah, I know, I'm a little obsessed.)

That said, Nomura has already said we won't be getting a BBSv2. There is a story there but there are no plans to make a game for it. Also, Sora could really care less about being a master. No. If Sora hasn't gained the ability he wouldn't have been able to unlock the sleeping world's keyholes. Riku passed because he was the only person to sense the danger that was looming because of Xehanort, returned to the tower, and went into Sora's heart to save him.

I actually really wanted soras lines to be rerecorded by hjo just for consistency. It bugged me at first, but I've just gotten so desensitized to stuff like that due to having to deal with that in KH all this time as well as in Japanese games altogether that it no longer bothers me whatsoever.

Technically it's about 2 1/2 weeks, and It is a little jarring, but it doesn't really bother me. Especially since kairi still sounds so young.

(22 days after Roxas is in existence the Org members are ordered to go to Castle Oblivion, and Sora arrives about the same time they do, and everything from when Sora became a Heartless to the ending of KH1 probably took place in less than a few days.) A voice can drop in 20 days.

Hmm for me, it's English for KH1 and Japanese for ReCoM. The English dub was extremely fantastic. The lines were more memorable and Simple and Clean is just more sassier.

I guess it gives them more time to actually work on the game? Send off some sound bytes to 2 people who just place it into the game and done. No chopping bits of the game up, editing them together etc.

I know and I said that before. Instead of getting them to chop up the game so they can have footage to use, they only have the sound people send over some voices for the trailer.
And with such an early build of the game as this, it certainly wouldn't have been a good decision.

I never said they walked through that grassy area for 20 days. I said that everything that went down between Sora becoming a Heartless to reaching the end of KH1 probably happened in a few days and that 20 days is ample time for a voice to drop. Which includes the time while Sora was a Heartless to the end. Also we have no idea how long that grassy field went and for how long. They fade in to them camping and then to Sora finding the castle so anything.

Mostly because Re:coded was released in late 2010/early 2011 and development for KH3D was full-steam ahead up until it released 2012 and there wasn't any free staff able to work on it until after KH3D. Maybe.

Yeah, even if they had a few people on the main team having to choose and cut the cutscenes of the game to give to those who work on the trailers, I'd rather they just finish the game itself. By year's end we'll see anything and everything the trailer could have shown us anyways ^_^

Or the comments saying "How dare they re-dub Billy Zane with Richard Epcar in this" even though it's clearly the original dub with Billy Zane (although if people can't even tell, then does complaining about Billy Zane even make sense anymore?)

ROFL I saw the people complaining about Sora. It's really weird and random as I thought people considered HJO's pre-puberty voice the superior voice? xD Also it just shows how completely trivial those Zane-Epcar complaints are. If people can't even tell the difference between the two, or recognize any voice in the trailer for that matter, they have nothing to complain about and shows that hey maybe Epcar really isn't as bad as the Zane-nostalgia makes you think he is.

Yeah, I'm not hearing it either...though I can kiiiiiinda see why people think Axel is, since he spoke a bit too slowly in that one line. Personally (not that my opinion matter much), I actually think Stoner's emoting is a lot better than it was in DS Days, but she does sound like her voice dropped a bit.

I'm not judging the whole performance, I'm just judging the lines given. And yeah, they're pretty awkward. And I didn't like her performance in the original game either, so I really don't think this will win me over. It's as if Xion ate KH2's Aerith or something and all the monotone started coming out.

Well the original game was well...that. It's also been quite some years since that initial performance and she has a lot more voice acting experience under her belt now. I don't expect her to be fantastic, but I wouldn't sell her short so soon.
Also SE is really notorious for crap trailers with bad voice clip pickings. They manage to make everything sound very stilted xD
Also in the end the blame is usually on the voice director. Especially since it is apparently a Japanese voice director on the phone relaying orders to a translator to the recording manager and a part of me doesn't really trust the process that much xD

KH has some pretty darn creepy laughs and screams imo Kairi in KH1, Vexen in JPN Re:CoM, Larxene in NA Re:CoM, TAV in BbS during the opening where they don't stop laughing...ever on a repeating track -__-

I can kind of see where people might not like the few lines displayed in the trailer. While I don't think Xion sounded bored, I think it comes from the lack of expression people were expecting in those scenes. In the CO scene where she is with Axel, she isn't yelling but more just speaking a little bit loudly when I think people were expecting a bit more from her there. The other scenes too, while Alyson doesn't sound bad, she was phenomenal either. These are just a few lines though so I'll wait till I see all the cutscenes before making my judgement.

It is mainly the main story. If a bit of it takes place in a world, then they will show the scene there (like Agrabah, Wonderland) There are a few really important things skipped, oddly. Like the scene and fight between Saix and Roxas

And Xion investigating the main computer, or Roxas vs Xion (Invisible Heartless illusion fight.) Those ones had me nearly screaming at the screen for not being cutscenes. I know those scenes were there as text over a screenshot, but c'mon... those were very importnant scenes.

They would've been there for a little less than 20 days, since xemnas fought sora day five, so it's about day 7 that they were in that field.

I agree, while I understand the good intentions of the cutscenes, I can't help but feel like with 2 hours and 50 minutes they could have shortened things and added the epic fight scenes. Guaranteed when 1.5 comes out in the US Days is going to be blasted by haters and casual fans alike for being 2 hours and 50 minutes of just calm talking with barely any action :(

It would have taken a significant amount of time to do that, sadly. They would have did better making Kingdom Hearts 3 if they had remade Days if that had been the case. Staff even said in an interview they wanted to do it, but they would have been taking double the time to make the remaster and that time is better spent making new games than old ones. :c

But let's remember that they said 70% of the story, and the timing between the full remake of the game being scrapped and now was relatively tight so who's really to say that the lateness of the hour here prevented those scenes from being made. Animation takes a long time after all, even for be scene.

I'll agree with you about the BBS trailers, but this trailer for KH HD 1.5 Remix is honestly perfect audio-wise. I'm sorry, but if Xion is literally the only character in this trailer that sounds bored to me and everyone else sounds fine, then it's the performance. Not the editing.
Well, I wouldn't call the audio perfect. There was a lot of times during the trailer (I would say every line for KH + Re:CoM) where it had this dull echo effect. Not quite sure what else to call it, but it really annoys me and it does make me go "urg" at the voices.
