That's a great drawing of Xehanort.

Over Black Friday, I finally picked up the last few manga volumes I was missing for KH (2 vol. 4, Days vol. 4 and 5). I bought my first KH novel, too. I wasn't sure what they were like and only wanted to get one at first to see. I didn't know what the best one to try them out with was, so I got the novel for 3D since 3D doesn't have a manga anyway. I hope I enjoy it. :)

Looking forward to finally reading all of the KH novels when this one is out. Been saving them until KH3 was finished.

Is it just me but is 162 pages too small amount of pages for what has to be covered in the third novel for KH3? Especially if they are including Remind in it too...

And what about what happens in MoM? That can't be a separate novel... surely?

MoM could be a prologue chapter in the next book based on a main line game.

I am thinking it is larger than 162 because this was an especially meaty novel in Japanese at 397 pages compared to Vol. 2’s 223. The English vol 2 was 162, so Vol. 3 is definitely going to be longer. I’m going to estimate 200 pages at the least.

I hope it has more then 162 pages. I don't know how big the Japanese one is, so I can't say anything. I've been waiting all 2020 for this book. Haven't read the first two volumes of KH3 on my shelf because I was waiting for this one to read them all at once. My patience will soon reward me.

I hope so...

Just looking at the differences in pages for Vol 1 and Vol 2...

Vol 1 - 162 Jap - 237
Vol 2 - 160 Jap - 223
Vol 3 - pending (Amazon says 162) Jap - 397

There was two-page difference between Vol 1 and Vol 2 English version but 14 page difference between the Japanese volumes.

So Vol 3 should be around 200 pages as you estimated.

I don't get how it can only be a 2 page difference for the English versions for Vol 1 and Vol 2 but in Japanese it's 14 pages! How does that work?

The volumes in Japan are small books that can fit nearly in the palm of your hand. Ours are about standard side for a paperback in English, so there will be more content fit on a single page in English versus in Japanese.

Aren't the BBS and Days Novels supersized too? Like the English version has like three volumes all in one. Not that I'm complaining, it made it very convenient for me to collect them.

Yozora was central to the story of Toy Box and was included in Re:Start!!.

My copy of Re:Mind Me Again hasn't arrived (during the pandemic my main Australian retailer weren't taking pre-orders and then the release rolled around it immediately went to "out of stock" both online and in-store so I had to look elsewhere for the book) but based on @NemesisSP's thread Yozora is in the final novel.

It's entirely dependent on what Nomura decides to choose in the games.

Kanemaki went with Sora being crystalized as the ending, but included the bit with the driver from the ending where Sora wins and you can hear him say "I've been having these weird thoughts lately." which was also only from the Sora winning ending.

According to datamining, the Sora Wins ending is the canon ending, as it's labeled as "TrueEnding". But then again, as Oracle Spockanort said, it will depend on if that's the direction Nomura wants to go with it.

That said, Kanemaki's decision on how to present the ending is probably better for a book, and as I mentioned in my thread (which of course, the mention of brought me here :P), it also ties into how the original scene is something of a dream, thus how the events actually play out is something of a mystery for us.

I purchased a couple more KH novels today (I had the KH1 novel for a while but never followed up on it until now).

I’m surprised at how much the first KH2 volume leaves out from the games. I’m also surprised they decided to include Olympus even though it wasn’t in the KH1 novel.

Out of curiosity, what worlds are featured in the second volume?

The second volume of KH2? I believe the worlds as a whole are Beast Castle, Port Royal, Space Paranoids, Land of Dragons, Disney Castle/Timeless River, and you already named Olympus. They mention Agrabah in the briefest of mentions. Someone correct me if I missed a world.

Sora doesn't go to Halloween Town in the novels. In fact the world only appears in the Days Novel which Sora is not a part of. Starting with the Birth By Sleep Novel, they start really becoming more faithful to the games events rather than just their own. In DDD Ursula and Atlantica are brought up during the Ursula tutorial but in the Novel-verse Sora never went or met Ariel or Ursula. The KH3 Novel's are full of moments like this too. Mentioning worlds Sora didn't visit in the Novels but did in the game versions. Sometimes they go out of their way to mention something when a better example is available. I actually made a list of these when reading the KH3 Novels because they have the most of them.

Chaser

The novels skipping over worlds and storylines pre-KH3 was one of the most disappointing things I realised when reading. DDD wound up with the Disney worlds being very basic and only a handful of pages long, and I kept thinking "why is it this short and disjointed?"

KH3 having three novels and each one dedicating 20+ pages to each world was a breath of fresh air. I'm picking up my copy of the final novel tomorrow at the post office but I'm expecting it to be similar to the first two novels. I hope that continues on with whatever novel comes next (not MoM, that is so not worth a novel. Make that a prologue to whatever bigger game gets a novel.)

Aren’t the English KH1, CoM, KH2, Days, BbS, and DDD novels just omnibus versions of the shorter Japanese novels?

Like, with KH2, the second half of the first English novel is the second Japanese one, and literally the only Disney world they used in that one is Olympus Coliseum.

In the novel’s defence, the Olympus visit is partially rewritten to be Sora’s first time there.

True, but that's why it doesn't make sense that there's a chapter about Olympus in Re:Coded (or a Hundred Acre Woods one in CoM).

The novels skipping worlds in KH1, CoM and KH2 is the only thing I don't like about them, as I really do love them. Good thing that from Days/BbS on they include all the worlds.

I really hope we get a Union X novel soon (as UX seems to be ending relatively soon), that covers the rest of the game. I could see Melody of Memory being an epilogue in that, for instance.

I’ve bought a couple more novels. I was a bit disappointed that the BbS one didn’t have illustrations for some reason (besides the coloured ones at the beginning and end).

An aspect of BbS I did appreciate was that the canonical ending to Disney Town was Terra’s one. With the negative stuff that tended to happen in his Disney world visits, it was nice to see him be embraced by a world for a change.

Are they just there if you dont feel like playing the game, or do they do something the games dont? Like in some of the old manga, there were some cute characterization moments you couldnt find in the games (Aerith making salty lemonade in Kh1 or Kairi giving Axel the finger (basically) in Kh2), do you get that out of the novels as well?

Well, like the manga, it’s a different take on the games. Plus in the early novels, there are some events that are rearranged or merged together, like Sora reuniting with Riku during the second Guard Armor boss fight in KH1. It also gives readers a chance to see what the author might think is going in a character’s head, and in some cases, include scenes not in the original games, like Axel briefly training during Dream Drop Distance.

True.
It helps to give context to some scenes that didn’t quite make sense when shown in the game.

In KH3, for instance, a lot of people were confused by Riku’s extreme reaction to Mickey saying that “Aqua is like Sora”. The novel clarifies that his reaction was because he interpreted it to mean “Aqua is a person who always has her head in the clouds, just like Sora”.

Ah I see, I see. Just exploring more things that just kinda happen in the games? Ok, I can get that. Well let me know if the novels better explain the shit that happens at the end of the games or how Sora learned to run up 90 degree walls. Stuff like that Nobody dimension at the end of 2 and Sora time traveling and ALL that Re:mind kerfuffle still have me too confused too think about it for too long.

Do the novels go explain how riku walked out of that heartless attack with a haircut and how the Kingdom Key of Darkness gets "damaged"?
Or even where keyblade come from since Yen Sid just happened to have two spares on hand when these dorks broke theirs.
I know its petty to even ask, but Nomura does an awful job of introducing these changes, hopefully somone explained them a bit better

Honestly I think that was just a line to explain why you can level up Keyblades in the game. I’m not sure how the Kingdom Key D got damaged (or if it even did), but I think in-story Mickey just figured ’better safe than sorry’ after seeing Way to Dawn get broken.

Think he means Riku’s Way to Dawn, in which case it was just said that the heartless in the RoD were stronger than they expected and that they should have powered up their Keyblades more before they came.

Yeah, the early one was weak, but I also think it was because Kanemaki was coming off of writing a BL novel and was really doing her best to make a good impression with Disney and SE without inserting too much of her own flair into it.

One of the weirdest/poorly handled moments I remember from the first novel was the scene with Sora and Kairi’s old cave drawings.

For some reason, Kanemaki just skips over that part near the beginning where Sora finds the drawings and adds the paopu fruit, but then incorporates it during the ending when Kairi finds them, with Kairi randomly seeing a vision/manifestation of Sora drawing on the wall, like in the games ending cinematic, only taken way too literally.

It can also have it's own plotline. Like in the KH2 Novels we spend a lot of time with Riku, Naminé and Axel. A lot of it being things that could have taken place in some form when KH2 came out.

I think this mostly played into the fact that Kanemaki was very clearly not a fan of Sora and Kairi's relationship xD She's warmed up to it over the years, but those early novels were absolutely her avoiding it when she could.

Understandable, but her method makes zero sense. If you’re going to put it in at all, why not both of the times it shows up? Especially so the later reference makes sense lol

Little things like that are why the first book really isn't that great. But man, does she make up for it in the later novels. Chain of Memories is so amazing (especially the extra story on Riku Replica) and the extra stuff in Kingdom Hearts 2 is really fascinating, especially what happens with Kairi and Namine is explained so much better. I love too that Axel helped Goofy back up after the 'death', which explains why Goofy is so trusting towards Axel afterwards.

Chaser

I just played through Monstropolis again and thought to myself "why are they surprised / scared by being monsters, they've been in Halloween town before" ?‍♂️

Maybe they found their Monstropolis transformation to be scarier? Beats me.

I hope they announce another novel soon that covers Union X or even Dark Road, with an epilogue chapter that contains the Melody of Memory stuff. I'm craving more!

I have loved these novel adaptations of the games! I have all of them except the ones for II, Union X and III!
