Kingdom Hearts -HD 2.5 ReMIX- Announced at D23 Expo Japan!

A little over a year ago, Kingdom Hearts -HD 1.5 ReMIX- was announced for the Playstation 3. The high definition remaster contained Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, the enhanced version of the original that had been released on the Playstation 2 back in 2002; Re:Chain of Memories, first released on the Gameboy Advanced in 2004 and fully remade with 3D graphics in 2007 for the Playstation 2; and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, first released back in 2009 for the Nintendo DS, which has now been remade into nearly 3 hours of cinematic cutscenes.

Upon its initial release on March 14th 2013 in Japan, and then later on September 10th 2013 in North America, the collection has recieved critical acclaim among fans and critics alike. The game was a massive success in Japan, having sold roughly 130,000 units within the first week alone, and it was the number 2 best seller in Europe at its launch on September 13th 2013. While had remained unclear about a remaster for the rest of the games in the Kingdom Hearts series, Tetsuya Nomura said in an interview not long after -HD 1.5 ReMIX- was announced in Japan that "it would be pretty unnatural" for there not to be a Kingdom Hearts -HD 2.5 ReMIX-.

This claim went further with the release of Kingdom Hearts -HD 1.5 ReMIX- in Japan, the credits featuring a big hint into the future of the ReMIX's. Selecting the credits option on the main menu for -HD 1.5 ReMIX- would show the credits for the remaster collection...as well as scenes from Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, and Kingdom Hearts Re:coded.

After hearing Shinji Hashimoto tease the idea of a second HD remaster, it has been officially announced today at D23 Expo Japan that Kingdom Hearts -HD 2.5 ReMIX- will be releasing worldwide in 2014 on the Playstation 3!

Picking up after KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5 ReMIX, players will be able to continue on their adventures with Sora, Donald Duck and Goofy, and also explore the origins of the KINGDOM HEARTS series with characters Terra, Aqua and Ventus all with gorgeous high-definition visuals and enhanced gameplay mechanics. KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.5 ReMIX will provide fans with the chance to replay the games of the celebrated franchise, and also lead into the highly anticipated KINGDOM HEARTS III, which is set to be released on the Playstation 4 computer entertainment system and Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft.

Follow Kingdom Hearts Insider on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Google+ for all the latest news on Kingdom Hearts -HD 2.5 ReMIX- and Kingdom Hearts 3!

Not necessarily. Days was going to be a full game, but they wound up not having the time (which I assume is attributed to having to rebuild Final Mix).

It's totally possible Re:coded will be playable.

It more than likely means that it will get released like 1.5. But I would LOVE to see a worldwide release. We've had too much great Kingdom Hearts news for one night though, and I have extremely low hopes of it happening.

Seems to me it would either have to be that or they'll reduce it to just a single-player feature. I can't think of any other way of implementing it.

Multiplayer Mirage Arena in HD, though. I would be OK with that madness.

I think the entire plot is full of bad writing post the first game, but out of all the prequels, midquels and sequels BBS had the best story. Things were kept fairly nice and simple, like in the first game, and there was a lot of focus on re-telling the Disney plots instead.

But...it wasn't simple. The plot was twisting itself into a pretzel to make sure the predetermined end came about, no matter how illogically it made the characters act. And the Disney presence in this game was vastly overshadowed by the original plot, even more than in KH2, where at least Donald and Goofy were constantly at your side.

But ultimately, the main problem was the game just didn't do a good job of making me care about the characters, or even genuinely believe their connection as friends. We have like, one scene at the beginning where they laugh awkwardly together and after that, they're off on their own, with any other friendship-building scenes being crammed in through repetitive flashbacks, and whenever they do meet up, it's just to get snippy and angry at each other. It's hardly SRK's well done intro on the DI, and it's just hard to care about any of the bad stuff that befalls these guys. Especially since most of it could have been nipped in the bud if they--Terra most of all--had stopped for just a second and acted like actual, thinking human beings; but a lot of the time, there's simply no logical explanation for why they take the actions they do, other than that the plot demands it. Which, sadly, is what the Star Wars prequels did.

Hold onto your butts! He's tough. Not as merciless as MF, but he has much higher defense and HP, so it's more of a grind. If they include an online mode, you'll be able to take him down with teammates, but he's still beatable solo. And I'm also wondering if they'll remix Forze dell'Oscurita, though not sure if that would be a good thing. It's already an epic theme as is.

The writing (and pacing) is pretty mediocre in general, I do not think that the first title stands out that much really because much of it's "story" is so simple it borders either on cliché or simply has the "totally new"-aspect because it's the first glance at this particular universe where no actual important background lore is yet established. There is much nostalgia at work when putting KH 1's storytelling too far above the others which it wasn't.
The pacing however was much better than in any other title, as was the inclusion of the Disney worlds.
If I had to rate the story of the whole series though, I'd say the actual story gets a B- or a C+, but the presentation and handling of it gets a D-.

The main problem with BBS' story is that they rush way too fast into things that should have been explored and explained more. The characters had to do something for some predetermined plot point that needed to happen more than once without them really elaborating on stuff.
This way how to reach that predetermined plot point was sadly left aside/handwaved in more than one case in BBS, which leads to the characters sometimes looking "stupid".

Seems pretty logical to me considering how they've been raised.

If my parental figure had spent years teaching about believing in the good within others, how light is supreme and all that stuff, I probably wouldn't think much of it otherwise. And especially for Terra, who just so inconveniently happened to encounter all the villains first. For all he knew, people just looked like that on those worlds. Enchanted Dominion could have totally been occupied by darkly clad horned ladies in green, so who's he to judge when he's only seen one other person in that world?

The issue is the difficulty in separating what we know from our experiences as the player, and what the character knows from their experiences, which affects their credibility and authority within the game.

So it happens with Maleficent. But then he also trusts the Evil Queen. Then Hades. Then the mad scientist guy. Then Hook. Then Master Xehanort. So you'd think he'd learn his lesson after a while about don't trust obviously bad people who tell you to kill a girl and retrieve her heart, but he just seems to completely lack a brain. You can rationalize it with the whole "what the character knows/experiences" thing--but if none of these villains set off any alarms for Terra, when they would for any normal, actual human, how are you supposed to relate to him? He just comes off like some weird, unthinking alien. And then even after he gets tricked by villains over and over and over, he still trusts MX over his friends and supposed father figure, because darkness and reasons. Never once does he stop to think, "you know, I've been tricked a whole bunch of times now by villains, maybe I shouldn't blindly follow what people tell me."

And that's just Terra. But this is a celebratory thread, so let's get back to WOO 2.5 REMIX *does Elaine dance*

I'm so getting the JPN version of this game. Part of it is due to nostalgia, as I originally imported BBS before it came out in North America and it has resonated with me since then. Part of it is also because while I adore and respect Willa Holland, and sneer at weeabos/purists who slam her, I enjoyed hearing the sounds/noises Megumi Toyoguchi made as Aqua when I was spamming cartwheel, which lets face it, if you've played as Aqua and have never done so, then you've truly never played BBS the way it should be (LOLz).

BTW, Aqua is my favorite of trio. She's easily murdered in the early stages in the game but compensates later on and kicks ass. Also, while the original KH maybe superior in terms of depth and storyline to the second, which I don't dispute/disagree, I still prefer and have more fun playing the second, so take that haters *blows a raspberry at naysayers*

What makes you say that? Just because it's a PSP game doesn't mean it'll be a download code. Santa Monica Studios did a marvelous job upscaling both of their PSP God of War titles into pristine HD on Blu-ray discs. PSP to PS3 isn't all that hard to do.

Awesome! I hope we don't have to wait too long to get our hands on this game!
I wasn't really blown away by the trailer or the screenshots, idk if it's because it just doesn't look as good as 1.5, they're trying to tone it down with the bullshots, or I'm so used to seeing KH in HD now that it just doesn't "wow" me anymore. xD

So a question for you guys. This is really a minor concern for me, but do you think they'll replace the Japanese voice clips for the Absent Silhouette Org members with their English voices? Even if just with archived audio from Re:CoM.

I'd assumed that they would replace Sephiroth's voice in KH 1.5 ReMIX with George Newbern, however they didn't do this. With that in mind, I'm worried they'll drop the ball here and we'll be stuck with the Japanese voices for the CO members when you fight them in KH2FM 2.5...

We won't be stuck with Japanese voices, I can tell you that much.

Iirc, that's exactly what the did for the original KH2FM: they used the voice clips from Re:CoM, so it should go without saying that we'll be getting English audio throughout the entire game.

Again, them not replacing the original audio or redubbing over voice actors who are no longer involved in the series is not the same situation. We understand why you'd be concerned about it but you can't keep comparing the two and using it to strengthen your fears no matter how much we explain otherwise.

I remember that this has been discussed somewhere, but let me just reiterate my opinion again.

I personally believe that they will, and should, replace the Japanese voice clips with their English counterparts. I'm not expecting something as grandiose as hiring the CO platoon's voice actors to record battle grunts, but it'd be a very huge plus if they do. Anyway, my point is that why not dub it, considering that they do have the archive audio files from Re:CoM?

As for Sephiroth's voice in 1.5, they stayed with Lance Bass (archive) clips because that was how it was in the English version of KH1. I believe they want to be as faithful as possible to KH1. It's like how they could've gone with redubbing Sora but decided to stick with his pre-pubescent voice, albeit in a lesser scale.

i just dont understand why in kingdom hearts hd 1.5 remix the japanese had the choice to play in both english and japanese but we only got the option of english. itll probably be the same with hd remix 2.5. I WANNA EXPERIENCE THEM BOTH IN JAPANESE. its the language that i major in but im not fluent. it would be amazing to have the option to play in japanese with english subtitles. now im gonna have to buy the japanese one and not understand anything except some of the language lol.

Um, do you mean the Japanese copies of the game? Sorry, but I don't think so...

I've got the Japanese copy of the game, and there certainly isn't any option to play the game in English, not even English subtitles. Probably you've confused it with another game?

ya they had confirmed it that in the japanese version you can play both in english and japanese but only with japanese subtitles for both languages. i guess that option changed before release. either way, im still buying KH HD 2.5 remix in japanese. i already imported kingdom hearts 2 final mix+ a while back and played it on my ps2 and got through it just fine. i can do it again lol.

It was a mistranslation from the early TGS 2012 reports. Attendees were commenting that KHFM, which originally had English audio, had been switched back to Japanese. This was very quickly cleared up but it looks like many people unfortunately didn't get the message.

If you could reread Flanix's post again, he stated that he has the Japanese version of 1.5, which only has Japanese audio. They did not confirm that the remasters would have dual audio at any point.

We all know that SE is altering their promotion screenshots quite a bit (I'll eat my hat if Terra's arm will actually look this different in the final game), but I think doubling the texture size (to PS2 standards) and setting the polygon count a bit higher is a given. Maybe they even rework the keyblades models, because they will look bad in HD.

The Keyblades in BBS, from what I remember, were 2.5D, as in, 2D textures, sometimes and 3D in some parts. It's mostly noticeable in Earthshaker when Terra faces the Symphony Master. So I think making proper Keyblade models is a given at this point.

That wouldn't make much sense. Since there is a necessity this time *unlike 1, CoM and 2* to create better textures they might as well put PS3-res textures in the game. They are remaking the textures either way.

Yes, most of them are really flat, probably to save polygons, but some of them are more 3-dimensional like the Crown Unlimit keyblade.

Not from the looks of this screenshot, but we'll see I guess. My theory is that they still have the original textures for BBS, as some of them were still on the disc in their original resolution (in the original Japanese release at least).

Hmm, the Emulator seems sharper, but the PS3 definitely has better detail, textures, lighting, etc. Plus, the emulator one seems flatter, Those laces on Aqua's armor still look a kajillion times better on PS3 by comparison. The background is also much smoother in the PS3 version. Keyblades look a little bit more natural too.

And seriously. Terra's shoulder. Those edges in the PSP version could poke an eye out.

Yeah I see what you mean. However on the emulator some lighting effects like shadows and depth of field aren't fully emulated so its missing a few details.

Placeholder date. It's not that date from what Nomura is saying, he said it was too early when it was announced at E3 so I wouldn't take the 2014 date.

No, she's not any thinner. It's just the better detail. It kinda tightens everything up. She's the same size, she just looks more solid since there's less of that blurry, pixely texture around her midsection.
