Kingdom Hearts III D23 Expo Japan Trailer!

First announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo earlier this year, Kingdom Hearts III plans to be the grand finale to the Xehanort saga fans have been awaiting for years now. The short announcement trailer shown at E3 2013 reawakened the passions of casual and long-time fans of the Kingdom Hearts series, and everybody has been waiting since the game's initial reveal to learn more about it.
While not much information has been released regarding Kingdom Hearts III, fans were lucky enough to get a new trailer at D23 Expo Japan 2013. You can watch it right now below:

I don't really have high hopes for this trailer to be honest. It's clear that they haven't shown Sora's new duds yet. They models for Riku and Kairi are still absent. And this looks to be a minigame. Not exactly the thing I'm excited about for this game. Regardless, I am excited to see the trailer. At least we get to see more of the Kingdom Shader.
I'm also disappointed at the look of the health bars down there. It doesn't look like they'll be using drawings for them anymore. :(

Oh, the sky looks like Twilight Town sky. And Roll Splash and Jump Off... ride-exclusive commands?
I don't really have high hopes for this trailer to be honest. It's clear that they haven't shown Sora's new duds yet. They models for Riku and Kairi are still absent. And this looks to be a minigame. Not exactly the thing I'm excited about for this game. Regardless, I am excited to see the trailer. At least we get to see more of the Kingdom Shader.

Pretty sure this is an attack, not a mini-game.
Also, I wouldn't say they aren't using drawings for the health bars anymore, or rather I hope not. They could just be using these as place holders till the art is actually done? If not, I will be disappointed as well. It was always a nice touch especially since your party members are Disney characters.

The timestamp is fine for me. It is now...1hr and 55min until the trailer. Also can you check your time settings to make sure it is fine? If it is fine and you still see an error with the timestamp, screenshot it and send it to me in a PM or in the Ask a Mod thread

Be prepared to wait a few years for it. It does look good, but right now most of what we've seen is from earlier builds. If you think this is good, imagine what we'll get a in a couple a years when it is finally done.

Nope. He isn't. It's just his normal outfit. None of the reports from D23 mentioned anything about a Valor form.

yeah its very hard to see! it probably isn't but from what is looks like he has the kingdom key over his head with the oathkeeper on his left shoulder. i had to examine it a couple times, who knows maybe because you said that that's what I'm looking for and its swaying my judgement.

But it is work in progress gameplay footage, so that's understandable. But seriously, for a game that got announced too early, this seems to be trucking along rather nicely. I'm impressed. The Osaka team is working magic over there.

Kingdom Shader looks amazing, especially on the Rock Titan. Also, it appears that Sora, Donald, and Goofy are fighting Rock Titan in a new area. Is this area part of the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad summon, or does this confirm the return of Olympus Coliseum and the inclusion of Mount Olympus as part of that world?
After watching the trailer a few times, I think I have composed myself enough to post some impressions.

When Sora shoots fire in this early dev footage, it doesn't shoot from his Keyblade. It looks like it shoots from under it close to his hand, so they still have to work with the animation. But hot damn.
Just..please no KH2 gameplay. Command decks. I also want more command styles that are more like TAV's along with these cute, Disney themed ones xD

Woah that was great!! Though I felt the riding around on the train was a little lengthy. I would have liked to have seen more of the fighting at the beginning. The new slashing animations for sora look great!! I loved how acrobatic he was!!
Also, I noticed the shape and color of those guns very closely resembles oathkeeper. The kingdom shader is beautiful.
I wish we could see his new model and duds since Nomura said he was getting them.

I love how much more fleshed out Twilight Town looks. It had a very generic, boxy aesthetic to it before. Deffo digging the green growing on the walls. It's all in the details.

Dang, summons just went from a character to one huge freaking theme park ride. I'd gladly expend all my MP and summon a train just to slay one lousy Shadow.
And I'm totally loving the glow and lighting of Twilight Town. It's so... believable! Look at how one side of the buildings is illuminated in gold, while the one perpendicular to it is in shadows... lovely.

Seriously, this looks pretty amazing. The "ship command" looks a bit overpowered (read: looks) but it's candy for the eyes. All my doubts for the Disney models in this quality are gone as well. Wasn't too sure if they would be able to nail it but they delivered!

I like how the stone tiles look as though they were individually laid. Environmentally, everything looks nice - lighting, textures, etc., and so early! It'll steadily look much better as development ramps up.

Things like the foliage and the bricks being different colors are really appreciated. You can tell they're giving it their all, and Kingdom Shader is obviously going to work like a charm.

I was hoping more but still the mini trailer looks sweet, Donald and Goofy especially look beautiful. The one good thing about having to wait for this game is that I'm not getting a PS4 anytime soon, a 2015 release would work for me.

Okaaaaaay. I know this is still in concept phase but these summons (?) look way to overkill to me and not really that useful.
Also every effect and light is too bright, when using the quadruple fira spell it's just too much. Another thing that makes me nervous are the "sprites" in the lower right corner that move around the whole time.
I'm not sure if these concept videos are really helpful, maybe in retrospect but not now when so so much is still about to change drastically.

Well there is that blue bar going down on the bottom left when the train and boat rides are going off. Notice how the boat only takes up a small portion while the train ride takes up a LOT. Maybe its going to refill very slowly or something else to hopefully balance it out. That way you cant just spam it when you feel like it.
That bar makes me think it's like a limit break, or a summon. Nomura did say summons were going to be a little bit different;

Well, whoa! The gameplay kinda reminded me KH2 but I don't know if that's because Sora is still in his KH2 gear...well, we'll see.

Thunder in KH1 darkened the lighting as well.
I might be in a minority, but I'm not really fond of the graphics. They just look so different and out of place compared to the other games in the series. But I get that if they had done it in the same style as the rest of the games people would have complained about that to no end. It makes me wish they had just finished the whole trilogy during this console generation.

To be honest, I kinda do think they could be done on the Wii U and I don't really see an excuse yet for it not to be on their except for the lighting. Still, the reason I play KH isn't graphics so I'm not too concerned plus when the game comes out the graphics will look a lot better mainly because it's not compressed by youtube.
I'm not too keen on the idea of riding around the Rock Titan on a magical train and occasionally hitting X at specific times to take a swipe at him. Seems a bit... systematic and boring? No?
However, it does look like a summon, or a special sequence, I doubt the whole boss fight is like this. My reason being is the timer on the command menu which ticks down. Also there is an option to "Get Off" so I guess it might specially appear during the course of the battle? (If you're wondering the other 2 commands are "Jump Dodge" and "Raid Ride", I'm guessing Sora displayed the Jump Dodge ability when he leaps out and lands back in the cart. Raid Ride, possibly the name of the attack command on the train?)
The graphics on the other hand, look great. I think Twilight Town, especially, looked very nice. Also the normal combat looked to be developing well to me, and seemed to combine elements of KH2, with the nice flashy attacks, and BBS with the command style "Two Shoot Blaster". I welcome the shape shifting of the Keyblade, as it is an ability Keyblade Masters obtain (as displayed by Terra and No Heart).
I can't wait until we reach more finalized gameplay, right now I'm sure this is very beta, and anything from here out will just continue to improve.

But it is normal because this trailer is just there to show us what we can expect how the gameplay and the special effects might be like.

Considering this is just early gameplay footage made in a few months time, this is extremely impressive and nobody should really expect most of this stuff to even remotely look like this in the end. They haven't even moved this to Luminous where all of their toolsets for lighting, particle effects, and whatnot are. Just wait until this is running on the actual game engine.
Is this actual gameplay as in someone playing this or is it a rendered CG film showing gameplay like they did on the first video. Depending on what it is shows how the progress of the game so far. I think it's a beta playable gameplay b/c compared to the first video the movement aren't do perfect with every hit connecting. If so that means that the development is moving faster than I thought it would.

- I love the idea of adding Disney's main attractions to KH. I never actually thought about it but it's ingenious, they really need to expands Disney Castle + Town into Disney World with the theme parks where they can have minigame and awesome battles.
- Return of Rock Titan is amazing! I really hope this means more hope for all of the Titans (including Cyclops, Tornado, and Lava Titan ^_^)
- The graphics are very different BUT it makes sense given KH skipped the PS3 in terms of new models. If they didn't, I'm sure this change would not have been so jarring. I actually think it looks really nice, but I see a lot of comments on different sites where people are mixed on it so far. It still is in the early stages and people will warm up to it!
- From the 3 pieces they showed (him normally fighting, Hook's spaceship, Rock Titan) I fear that 2 of those were like reaction commands and the Pegasus battle where it leads you through the fight and you just have to press X (or O in Japan) at the appropriate time. I really hope you can control that roller coaster in the Rock Titan fight, that'd be fun ^_^

- The Kingdom Hearts Sora figure has sold and it is VERY high, I highly doubt anyone could afford it minus a select few (I couldn't even afford it and I'll admit, I did have a friend there to bid for me and my bid was quite high). I will put the final price of it in a spoiler tag below me.
The final price was around $6,700. It was still rising last time my friend checked but had minutes left.

So simply put, yes these scenarios are playable. But we don't exactly know if they're actually playing it or if it's all just rendered CG.
I do love how Casey Jr... er...the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad train is EXACTLY the same design as the actual cart (The crazy awesomeness of all the details, railings, etc).

That doesn't mean anything though. It could still be a target render made to look like gameplay just to give people an idea of what to expect. They did that way back with FFXIII as well.

You can see the HP and commands in the CG trailer too. That isn't what makes this gameplay. This might even be target rendered...
Nomura said that in a way this stuff is playable, though not in the way we think of playable. This is probably able to run real-time at some level on their super computers they are building it on, but nothing we are seeing is actually running on PS4/XB1.
Did anyone else realize sora was fighting rock Titan on the mountain side of mount Olympus?,as in the one that leads to the gods as in like the scene in the Hercules movie?,which means that if this stays in the game we may be seeing a few more titans in a epic train like event.

Judging from the command list, it seems at this time they're going with command menu. Probably we can access different styles by performing specific sequences of magic spells, there's no telling now.

Right, but at the end of the combo he was holding the dual guns while just standing there which would suggest its more than a command. Probably similar to a style change in BBS. But the fact of the matter is THEY'RE BRINGING IT BACK!!
Honestly, I think the transformations could do wonders to add some variety between character fighting styles should the game have multiple scenarios/playable characters. The 3 Sora's are already pretty similar in handling(especially roxas/sora) which I can see happening between quite a few more of the newer keybladers. Having different transformation commands could really differentiate how they handle in battle. The craziness of dual blasters shooting everywhere fits Sora's style and personality perfectly, then as many have already speculated Axel can get his chakrams back for combo finishers and so on.

Try covering an event with rapid fire information relays coming in every minute; things are bound to be lost in translation. The Toy Story comments were made because the actions and assets reminded attendees of Toy Story. Nothing more.

I guess the game play looks good, but I don't like the guns or the pirate ship swing. The guns I guess were just never in my picture of Dora. And the Pirate Ship just looks boring.

I hadn't thought about that, PhantomSoD, but I really hope you're right. That would be awesome, if we could have Axel's chakrams as finishers. I could really seem them doing that, actually. Let's just hope that he uses them in some way.
Anywho, this trailer is really fantastic, and I like how we're already seeing so many different options for gameplay! That's one of the things I loved about DDD, and I'm glad they're bringing it back, with the different Finishers, new/improved Summons, etc. It keeps the gameplay fresh that way :D
And also, for those worrying that the roller coaster part is too Reaction Command-y, I don't think it will be. It looks like you control it somewhat more than you did RC, and at least it doesn't look like you're there the whole fight. Really, I think it's just something you can implement, if you want to get up and close with the Rock Titan's face.
I wonder if that means we'll see more giant enemies like this in III? God, I hope so. I mean, Atlas was amazing in XIII-2, but can you imagine what these bad boys will be like on the PS4?! And dear god, do I ever hope this means there will be more Titans and possibly Mt. Olympus in III :D

Y'know, I can't help but feel that the Old Mansion will only be blocked off for part of the game. I mean, the Haunted Mansion just seems like a place our heroes need to go in this game, right? And Kairi and HPO were in front of it in Zero Point, but I'm probably overthinking this. LOL.
What else? I really like the graphics, coloring, and lighting in this, and the Kingdom Shader is just fantastic! This new style is growing on me more and more, and I can't wait to see the finished product! I also dig the tiki torches in Twilight Town. LOL.

Right. Until we actually see how the game will play, we can't properly judge.
In the end it being on the XB1 isn't hurting the game or anybody who will buy it. Maybe if there are major differences in the two versions (which I doubt)...We'll probably see higher PS4 sales than XB1 anyways, so it is nothing more but a good way for KH to reach out to a wider audience.

Lol, it's certainly not going to break them. This is the #1 anticipated game from SE (not even FFXV has this level of hype) so it'll sell very well.
Also if all goes well, dev costs should stay at a reasonable number so the return is worth the effort.
Sorry to say but I am not liking the graphics style so far. It's not that the graphics are bad by any means but using them for KH is... meh. I know people say it is still early but the concept of the look of the game is clearly in action. It will get smoother, leaner and crisper but it will probably remain in the same vein as seen.
I just feel the engine is far too realistic for its own good given that they are meant to render Disney characters. This looks strikingly close to the end cinematic of KH2 but a little more...err..."clay-ish." While that is impressive from a technical standpoint, that particular sequence had the jarring representations of Donald, Goofy and Mickey which made them look awful and out of character. From what I've seen, this holds true for KH3 as well. Sora, on the other hand, looks just fine. And that is a problem.
All games done on the previous graphics engine have this incredible balance that stays true to Disney but does great justice to original/Final Fantasy characters as well. I feel they should have gone with a much more cell-shaded look than seen. I applaude the effort to make a unique look that does retain a cartoonish feel, I'm just not feeling it in the slightest.
The gameplay seems fine and quite far off given it is Alpha. The rides look sweet.

I feel like KH3 will wind up in a PS4 bundle pack. It's almost inevitable, with how much hype surrounds it. Plus, I've noticed that every major release of the current generation has seen a PS3 super slim bundle (God of War Ascension, Uncharted 3, Assassin's Creed III, GTA V, etc.) So I think Sony is bound to do the same with PS4 and KH3.

I wouldn't call it "in action" when we don't even know at what point this build of the game is. KH games have always seen a shift from the beta to final, as you know.

What do you mean? The footage shown wasn't running on Luminous. They don't have anything on the actual game engine yet, and I don't think their Kingdom Shader program was used on this either considering the lack of any lighting.

They have a summon gauge, but I don't think they are ACTUALLY summons. They might be special attacks you can select from a menu or trigger somehow. Or even related to trinity attacks.

If they do decide to kept the Disney rides, I hope there just attacks or trinity limits rather than summons. I`d rather have actual characters a summons rather than objects
Finally watched the trailer, and I'm only going to stay neutral it looks ok, but this is one of the those times I remember back in 2004 or 2003 I forget basically before Kh2 came out.
Saw a few epic things here and there, and then boom ish happened. From what I see so far it is cool the icons are going to animated(hopefully), and it seems like we'll be able to explore a lot more than we use to.
I'm all hyped up now from watching the trailer! Definitely worth checking out after another long day. Sora suddenly using a pair of guns was really cool. Must be some sort of special attack. Speaking of attacks, the keyblade look significantly strong then ever before. Sora fighting off that gigantic titan on a train was awesome. It'd be cool if the world of Hercules was explored much more further now. I know, they could easily change it later. Just saying, it'd be a cool boss fight.

I really loved the trailer and everything looks so good but somehow I kinda feel like it looks.. too good? Like it doesn't belong to Kingdom Hearts - based on the graphics - at all. It's hard to explain. And it doesn't mean that I'm not excited, because I am :3.
I suspect I would feel that way if we didn't have the opening cinematics to show us what the KH world is supposed to look like. This is the direction the series is going in, I think once they fine tune it it may look less jarring but I feel this is the organic direction. There's no use fighting it.
I know it's early, but here are my suspicions based on the little bit that we've seen.
Updated Twilight Town is GORGEOUS, but I have to wonder why they added all the signposts, lamps, guard rails. Now, duh, it's obvious. They're making a fuller environment to use so they can implement flowmotion into III. WHICH IS FINE. Kingdom Hearts II suffered from a lack of environmental interaction and flowmotion is the perfect fix for that.
Demonstration of new magic is gorgeous, love the different ways you can use it. Obviously the Heartless here are just test dummies, because I've never known a Large Body to stay afloat for that long while getting hit with magic.
Keyblade Transformations: Twoshoot Blaster's cute. I wonder if these different transformations are specific to certain Keychains or not, since it looks like those guns are the Oathkeeper. Or maybe they're triggered by your battle choices, like the BBS command styles. They seem to be similar.
The "summon" system is boss. Still not sure of the specifics but I am anticipating a splash mountain one and tea cups. Also, did you notice the vacant seat in the train? I wonder if that's just aesthetics or if you can have all party members join in at once.
Honestly, I think the transformations could do wonders to add some variety between character fighting styles should the game have multiple scenarios/playable characters.
I love the keyblade transformations and I do agree that it'd be cool if everyone got their own one or two so that they seem more differentiated. My fear is that Sora will end up getting 7 or 8 keyblade transformations (like Terra's LS did in KH2FM) which will make him ridiculous compared to the others and making the keyblade not really a blade anymore but really a keyweapon.
Confirmed (not really I'm joking): Matterhorn world for KH3. Just a mountain. With a yeti. That's the whole world. SDG + Yeti.

I highly doubt they'll be summoned. The ship isn't so jarring but can you imagine using the train in a very small room? It would just go nuts and it'd be way too hectic I think...
Also just throwing this idea out there: Chernabog boss fight, using the It's a Small World ride as a summon to fight him. Or that teacup ride, either would be ridiculous enough. xD
lol I think the dolls in It's a Small World are so creepy that I'd rather the lights turn off in the ride and you beat the crap out of the dolls taken over my Heartless...
you do make a good point. bringing disney rides in the kh series is a great way to bring back the disney magic that has been lacking since the first game

It's like Breaking Bad. Even the theories that are great and make perfect sense are wrong, and the finished product ends up being way better than everyone's speculations.

I've read plenty of posts assuming that the gun must come from Toy Story. But to be honest I don't think it resembles Buzz's space gun at all.
The design is more round and curvy, whereas Sora's gun looked jagged and pointy.
It looks to me like Larxene's knives, although the colour resembles quite the same...

You've got a point. I kind of forgot the image that Bahamut has created over the course of the FF series. Not only that, it'll allow for a way more dynamic combat, what with the dragon manoeuvring and swerving everywhere.

I really like the new style, needed to get used to it at first but now that I've seen the trailer a few times. I'm really digging it. Also considering this is still an early version, I'm really looking forward to seeing how the final product will look and how our other main characters will look. It's neat seeing how Twilight Town has changed and I really like how detailed it is. Let's just hope we still can get to the Mansion. It's funny that the people of TT left the gap open for over a year and then decided to close it.
I also love the idea of command styles based on Disney rides. The train looks like it's a lot of fun. I don't know how I feel about Sora using guns, though seeing they're kind of like Stitches plasters I guess I'm okay with it. I wonder if there's going to be other command styles with a new form for a known keyblade.
I'm kind of bummed that the avatars aren't hand drawn anymore, but I like that they move and kind of seem battle ready.

2.5 has been confirmed to hit the stores in 2014, though. As for KH3, if we can get it at any time in 2015, I'd consider us to be super lucky. Probably 2016; I don't mind waiting two years for a game that will wrap up an entire saga and all the complications and mindscrews it had given rise to, because it has to be delivered really well and carefully.

It'd be cool if the staff could focus on giving their all for KH3 and it alone, not distracted by any other things. Besides, haven't we had a three- or four-year vacuum after KH2?

I know that the Thearhythms are outsourced, I more meant that even if 2 teams made the 2 games, if KH3 coming out a year early meant TKH wasn't happening (cause they want to stick to 1 KH game a year) then I'd rather KH3 get pushed back, regardless of who made it. Pretty unlikely. I'm not even sure how you found anything like that on Google Play since it is an app/media store and Kingdom Hearts 3 is none of those things. Do you have some kind of screenshot?

No. I mean, you'd at least be guaranteeing you get the game, it's just that whenever it does get a release date (both games) they'll change the date to then and send it to you then. It's not like you'll be getting the game anytime ahead of anyone else and there will be a while before you need to preorder it...

GDC 2014 in March but that is like wishful thinking. PAX East in April which is also wishful thinking. E3 2014 in June most likely. If not E3, TGS and Jump Festa are likely candidates. D23 Expo is a dream at best, and who knows if there will be a D23 Expo Japan again.
Essentially, expect nothing.
