What happened when Axel was grabbing Kairi to a dark portal?

It's never fully explained, at most we can assume that he takes Kairi with him but is attacked or something happens and Saix takes her from him.
So Axel is proctectimg Kairi? Why? What does he wants with Kairi?
Does he wants to join Kairi and Namine as one?

He mostly wants to use her as a tool to get Sora to work with him I believe. In the end though when she is captured he does his best to help Sora find her.
