On Windows Media Player? Well...You can play it on Windows Media Player CLASSIC, I think. However, I would recommend VLC Player. It plays every kind of media, and if the file has the option to, it allows you to switch subtitles on and off, to different languages, change the audio language, and even the movie angle. However, you might not find those features on many movies. AFAIK, it's virus free, you might wanna run a scan though. Here's a link:

VLC is okay, but Winamp is a hundred times better imo. www.winamp.com

Either will work, try them both out and pick which you like better.

Well mkv files suck ultra hard, but that isn't the point. If you want to make movies with them, you may need to convert them first. I can't think of any video editing programs off the top of my head that support MKV.
