The castle had exploded.

And it had been awesome.

Axel was still fighting down the adrenaline rush, and if he'd had a heart it would have been pounding in his ears. Being surrounded by fire sharpened his senses, made everything more intense--it was almost like feeling. The flame was always hard to control, but this was the first time he'd totally lost it. Something wasn't right; he hadn't expected it to do that, but from the look of things the better part of the Organization made it out, even if everyone--including the Flurry of Dancing Flames himself--was convulsing with coughs and hacks.

Keeping an eye out for Xemnas, who would probably be looking to him first after the headcount, Axel started moving in search of Roxas. If his best friend was still inside, there wasn't a chance in hell the redhead was staying out here.

[A VEXEN DRAWS NEAR!]

What.

The hell.

Just happened.

One minute he was working with some octanitrocubane for a particularly delicate experiment he'd dreamed up purely out of curiousity, and the next minute he was standing somewhere outside, dazed and confused, trying desperately to empty his lungs of smoke and chemical fumes. He'd had some pretty terrible explosions in his lab before, but THIS...something was amiss.

He'd been careful. He thought he had placed all the necessary precautions. He knew how volatile it was. Where did he screw up? As his mind ran through its checklist and the events comprising the last thirty minutes, it occurred to him that--

Axel.

It was hard to visually distinguish much of anything with his eyes watering as much as they were, but that mess of spikey red hair was unmistakable. Shoulders hunched, jaws clamped shut, teeth bared -- the scientist looked ready to kill.

"Ax--" A coughing fit. Unable to get his attention verbally, Vexen made a bee-line for the Flurry and reached out to grab him by the sleeve. "Hhgaghkzklll!"

He wasn't spotting Roxas among the others, but it seemed like there might be a few people inside anyway, and considering he was just about the only one impervious to fire it only made sense that he'd get called on to head in there anyway. It was just getting him all riled up, the almost-feeling of worry, when Roxas might be hurt or--

Something freaking quacked behind him and he lost his balance when something else jerked his arm away from him. The grip wasn't very strong and he broke it in a second, whirling to find the nearly staggering form of Vexen--who, aside from Demyx, had probably absorbed the worst of the whole thing, in retrospect--and blinking at the scientist in surprise. "Vexen...? Oh! Hey, Vexen, you seen Roxas anywhere?" After all, it wasn't like he had the capacity to care that he and fate both had just burnt Vexen to within a inch of his life, and if the scientist got too uppity he wouldn't hesitate to take advantage of that weakness.
