[possible spoiler warning]
"Death is not a hunter unbeknownst by its prey.
One is always aware that it lies in wait.
Although life is but a journey to the grave,
It should not be undertaken without hope.
Only then will a traveler's story live on,
Cherished by those who bid him farewell."
Such an awesome line...
But I digress. I greatly enjoyed Persona 3. The characters felt wonderfully well written, and immersion was almost immediate for me. Truly this game was a pleasant surprise. To be completely honest, Persona 3 has been one of few Atlus games I could stand being in the same room as, let alone play. I've never played the other Persona games, but it's of little consequence. From my understanding, they're all stand alone games.
I've found that a common complaint launched against this game is the fact that you only really control the main character in battle. I personally liked this unique approach to combat. I thought it really helped define the player's role as the main character. The voice acting felt top-notch for the most part, with only a few hiccups to bother me here and there. I thought that just about all the characters I encountered while playing through the S-link aspect of the game came off as very likable. I think the writers did an incredible job at making the player really feel a connection with the S-link NPCs whose relationship you maxed out.
Now that I've sung the game's praises, allow me a bit of room to complain:
There is absolutely no reason that the fully developed S-link characters should have less variety in their dialogue than any of the other NPCs. It just screams of laziness on behalf of the developers. I found something wholly depressing about forming an intimate relationship with a girl only to have her trapped regurgitating the same line of dialogue throughout the rest of the game upon maxing out her S-link. The S-link characters had the potential for much deeper character interaction. I mean, how much sense does it make that the people you have formed the deepest relationships, an 'unbreakable bond" as it were, to show the least interest in your character in-game?
Take my character's girlfriend, Yuko, for example. Here's a girl my character shows undivided loyalty to. He makes a point of visiting with her whenever he can. Over time their relationship grows more intimate, and they fall in genuine love with each other. Suddenly comes the day that Yuko decides to consummate the depth of their feelings for one another. The whole affair is really romantic, and honestly, feels wholly sincere.
Enter the next day.
My character's girlfriend is now reduced to little more than a slightly animated statue.

Again, there was potential for so much more from the S-link characters, particularly the ones you could form a romantic relationship with. I would have liked to see more interaction with the maxed out S-link characters. I think at the very least, the player should still have to maintain a relationship with them. It just feels like such a waste. I would have at least had them show up at the dorm every so often. Just something simple would have been nice.
Something else that bothered me was the fact that the game all but punishes the player for not playing their character like a sleaze ball. Without two-timing half the female cast of the game, the main character had no way of maxing out each arcana. This left the player unable to obtain the best personae in the game. Honestly, I don't think the whole sleeping around thing really lends itself to someone who's trying to save the world.
Regardless of these complaints, however, I really do love this game. Though I feel that Persona 4 is going to have a hard time besting its predecessor, I've heard good things about tweaks to the S-link system. I'm sure I'll end up playing it either way.
Edit: I apologize for this long-winded and likely incoherent post. Insomnia, boredom, etc.
